Oathbreaker – Rheia

Oathbreaker – Rheia
(Deathwish, 2016)

Questa è Needles in Your Skin. Epica e commovente.

Oathbreaker – Rheia
(Deathwish, 2016)

First session of a cycle of psychoanalysis. Close your eyes, relax your muscles and begin to release your breath, too long held. Guitar sonic waves go back and forth on the shore, while a fragile, vulnerable, neurotic voice leaves deep marks on the sand (10:56). Soon every barrier disappears, and the emotional storm explodes, right into the face. Ultra-violent post hardcore outbursts, almost close to post black metal shores explored by Deafheaven. The second session of therapy (Second Son of R.) ends with a hysterical attack so intense that makes you shudder. Spit out all yourself up to consume your vocal cords. Already at this point we are enraptured by Caro Tanghe's expressivity, whose voice - halfway between Chelsea Wolfe and Julie Christmas - is subjected to continuous metamorphosis. A frighteningly human schizophrenia, extremely touching. The more obscure depths are exposed and burn as a living flesh opening a gap from an open wound. This is Needles in Your Skin. Epic and moving. With its dissonant vocal harmonies, Immortals shows the different personalities of the band (which is skating on thin ice between anger and introspective contemplation) trying to be in phase, perfectly succeeding in this effort. Going back to the lonely beach of the opening (Begeerte), the young Belgian band completes a therapeutic journey through moments of blind fury, melancholic post rock melodies and misty shoegaze atmospheres. With its disarming intensity, Rheia is a painful, yet indispensable, inner journey.

Gong - Rejoice! I'm Dead!

Gong - Rejoice! I'm Dead!
(Madfish, 2016)

Gong - Rejoice! I'm Dead!
(Madfish, 2016)

I imagine Daevid Allen on a flying teapot. Fluctuating in a surreal paradise, among pixies and gigantic radiant eyes, cheerfully jamming with the many musicians in the Beyond, or devoting himself to free love with his (also artistic) half Gilli Smyth.
I imagine that every now and then, up above, he sends a telepathic signal, aware of the fact that there is still a radar on planet Earth that can capture the cosmic waves of his creativity: Gong. The community of which he was founder and guru continues to carry on the positive vibrations of his music, for his explicit will, with an album in which the spirit of the Australian musician resonates as if he was still on stage without any nostalgic feeling. Rejoice! I'm Dead!, as it is clear from the title, possesses the irony that Gong have always nourished, and it is at the same time a tribute to Freedom. The extraordinary musicians who have accompanied Allen in the last few years have got the creative wealth to conceive an imaginative and funny album. Almost funky rhythmic energy coexists with surreal jazz passages, as psychedelic melodies expand  themselves into vast landscapes that need deep immersion, in complete meditation. Echoes of King Crimson are perceived repeatedly in the album - from crooked solos to concentric guitar arpeggios, to the overlapping sound layers, capable of creating great soundscapes. The personality of these musicians, especially that of Kavus Torabi (also member of Guapo), stands out within the compositions and gives further freshness to the musical paths traced by Allen throughout a lifetime. Up above, from that fluctuating teapot, the good Daevid laughs satisfied. He has been able to create an artistic entity that is still alive, free and creative, and that survives even to his death.

Alice in Chains - Facelift

Alice in Chains - Facelift
(Columbia, CBS, 1990)

Alice in Chains - Facelift
(Columbia, CBS, 1990)

How musicians in love with hair metal could generate psychotic Alice in Chains music it is still as a mystery to a lot of people. In the middle of the 80s Seattle was the center of a great flow of creativity, and hard rock was frequently revisited by bands such Green River, Mother Love Bone and Soundgarden. Following the paths traced by these bands, Alice in Chains contributed to redefine hard rock boundaries with personal sensibility. The blending of Cantrell and Staley visions created a personal poetic, influenced by hard rock energy, intimate melodies in Queensrÿche style, doped Black Sabbath riffs and suicidal Joy Division atmospheres. Facelift is still unripe, but in its first half demonstrates the great potential of a band capable of rewriting hard rock conventions, with the sensibility of the new decade.

Blood Ceremony + Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell + Ancient Cult - 10.06.2017 - Freakout Club (Bologna)

Blood Ceremony + Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell + Ancient Cult - 10.06.2017 - Freakout Club (Bologna)

Niente pedaliere grandi come astronavi!

New Wave of British Heavy Metal.

Blood Ceremony + Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell + Ancient Cult - 06.10.2017 - Freakout Club (Bologna)

Highway trips in the direction of the umpteenth concert are one of those exciting moments in which we lose ourselves in kilometric lucubrations on the "essence" of music. Today we focus on the beauty of direct, immediate, super-groovy hard rock (preferably played by a power trio), based exclusively on a (one and only!) distortion sound. No pedalboards huge like spaceships! Our wishes will be fulfilled by Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, playing an unexpectedly memorable concert, considering that we were at Freakout primarily for Blood Ceremony (which we wanted to see live after their concert in 2009, as support band for Electric Wizard!). But first things first.

While 20 minutes from Bologna, at Imola Autodrome, an immense crowd is gathering for Guns n' Roses reunion, we find ourselves under a flyover in the city center, in the tiny venue of the Freakout, along with a restricted circle fanatics of occult sounds. In its own way this "out of the world" gathering makes the evening even more like a secret rite.

Ancient Cult (from Bologna) to start the black mass are. Their esoteric hard rock is son of the 70s, midway between Black Sabbath sulfuric exhalations, Blue Öyster Cult space trips and the galloping style of the first New Wave of British Heavy Metal. A bit stiff in the first part (also because it is the first concert with the new drummer) with the passing of minutes they acquire warmth and security proving to be a very interesting combo, technically skillful and melodically never trivial (really some beautiful guitar phrasings). With his clean sharp voice, the singer is in my opinion the weak element of the band, but overall the outcome is really worthwhile.

As soon as the Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell bang the first riff in our face, we find ourselves in Easy Rider riding a motorcycle at full speed. Badass dirty hard rock that smells of gasoline and beer, gruff like Motorhead, elastic like Led Zeppelin, punk ante litteram like The Who. Bell-bottoms, gigantic boots, rocker look from another era, and a teenage on the drums that looks like a possessed octopus. I am really amazed by their incredible groove. Every riff is so classic that it seems you know their songs from ages, yet it exalts me as if it was the first time I hear a live concert. In the end I am soaking sweaty and exalted as a 16-year-old Guns n 'Roses fan in front of his idols (at a 90s concert). Magnificent!

After breathing directly from the exhaust pipe of a Harley, and still full with adrenaline, it is not easy to fall into the mysterious and vaguely esoteric atmospheres of Blood Ceremony. Yet the Canadian band shows that it has grown so much in recent years, that it is not crushed by the energy of the previous band (which, I repeat, was really incredible!). After Easy Rider is the turn of All the Colors of the Dark. Alia O'Brien plays the role of a priestess, and with a loud and sure voice (alternating with keyboards and flute) invites us into that dusty, somewhat psychedelic, and a bit kitsch, sabbath so dear to the horror imaginary of the past. The band plays really well, much more cohesive and confident than in 2009, and although it has lost some of its b-movie charm, it shows a melodic maturity that elevates it among the most interesting names of a genre very much in vogue lately and that they themselves were among the first to revive.

Zeal & Ardor – Devil is Fine

Zeal & Ardor – Devil is Fine
(Reflections Records, 2016)

Zeal & Ardor – Devil is Fine
(Reflections Records, 2016)

There is a really long and bumpy road crossing 19th Century American cotton fields and reaching us in the new millennium. A road traveled by a great part of today popular music. Manuel Gagneux unites the start point (the vocals of spirituals and gospels) and some of the many possible arrivals (Norwegian black metal, synthetic sounds of metropolitan electronics, nocturnal neofolk), following personal trajectories - unexpectedly engaging in spite of the apparent inconsistency of the path. The religious matrix of spirituals becomes invocation of the devil, surreal provocation to their very own nature (since their initial inspiration, the Christian religion, was imposed by slaveholders), but it highlights its deep essence of music with a desire of redemption through socialization. An essence that is still current and alive, especially in a really alternative music like that of Zeal & Ardor. A music in which different ethnicities coexist and collaborate, in a way conceptually similar to Algiers one (band blending "different communities" - like post punk and gospel - to create a new, modern, "society"). Zeal & Ardor is a perfectly successful experiment of integration, as shown by the fluidity of the wonderful Come On Down (Gagneux black voice becomes one only thing with the Northern European freezing outbursts of guitar and with the British melancholy of piano notes). We just have to extrapolate the lesson and apply this experiment to the society in which we live.

Aluk Todolo - Voix

Aluk Todolo - Voix
(Norma Evangelium Diaboli, The Anja Offensive, 2016)

Aluk Todolo - Voix
(Norma Evangelium Diaboli, The Anja Offensive, 2016)

“If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, Infinite." (William Blake)

Aluk Todolo found the key to open the doors of perception. For about forty minutes (earth time as reference) they let us have a look beyond the mirror. What we perceive is a universe of which we do not understand the boundaries, and whose vision frightens us and leaves us dazed. Voix is a labyrinth of obsessive and neurotic rhythms, on which loud  noisy guitars derail among notes bent semitone after semitone in infinite bendings, lancinating feedbacks and echoes running one after the other like on a spiral staircase. Real and unreal blend together. Long guitar notes amplify themselves as in a game of mirrors thanks to a masterful ability to manipulate the sound through larsen effects. Free from all rational constraints, in pure kraut rock spirit, we find ourselves immersed in dark disturbing atmospheres recalling the acid experiments of Oranssi Pazuzu post black metal. The vertiginous music of the French trio is a continuous metamorphosis with magnetic power. Once you peeped beyond the Pillars of Hercules of perception, it will be impossible to come back. Beautiful - and scary at the same time! - to get lost in this sea.

Giöbia + Capt Crunch and the Bunch – 27.05.2017 – Surfer Joe (Livorno)

Giöbia + Capt Crunch and the Bunch – 27.05.2017 – Surfer Joe (Livorno)

Giöbia + Capt Crunch and the Bunch – 05.27.2017 – Surfer Joe (Livorno)

When the thermometer marks 30 degrees even metalheads come out of the coffin to go to a concert a few steps from the sea. Obviously reaching the stage when the sun has fallen, to avoid the risk of a tan.

Livorno and its homeland of surf rock are simply perfect for the music of Capt Crunch and the Bunch, which seems to arrive in Piazza Mascagni from another era, when the beat was the music of the moment, just landed in Italy from an England in full creative ferment. The Pisorno band (as the Captain calls it) sounds even more cohesive and precise than at Borderline a month and a half ago, and with its dirty - typically garage – impact it makes melodies even rougher. On the seaside this music gains an even more sparkling and funny taste, and in some moments (those veiled with psychedelia) it has an acid aftertaste that makes it irresistible to my ears.

The 60s evoked by Giöbia are dark, foggy and stunning. The smoke machine saturates the stage with dense clouds, as the guitar (initially set to a giant volume) fills a square in itself impossible to fill, having the sea as its horizon. When the fog generated by the Stefano Bazu Basurto Gibson SG (ultra-effected up to the point of not sounding as a guitar) is fading, it is the bass that highlights how much the attention obtained by the band from Milano has been fully deserved. The simplicity and effectiveness of a hypnotic, round, circular, potentially endless riff, in which to get lost. This is the core of Giöbia music. If all this is well in evidence on record, giving softness to the songs, here it is hidden under sonic storms of delay and echoes, making the music extremely disorientating. But the core is always there. Underneath layers of smoke and fog. And getting lost inside it is always a great pleasure.
