Sólstafir - Berdreyminn

Sólstafir - Berdreyminn
(Season of Mist, 2017)

(Season of Mist, 2017)

If, as I found out, Berdreyminn means something like "bare dreamer", the sixth album by the Icelandic Sólstafir declares from the title its deeply emotional, personal and introspective nature. But even without knowing the meaning of the title, from the very first listening you are captured by the river (in flood) of the feelings animating and crossing these eight songs. And if I think that the dreamer can reveal himself because his words can be understood by a clear minority of listeners (and I admit to be among those crazy people who try to understand the lyrics anyway even without knowing Icelandic), a moment later I rub out this thought. The transport and the narrative ability of music and vocals are such that there is no doubt that they are intentionally aimed at those who want to listen to them and understand them. Enclosed in the duration of the album there is an almost uninterrupted stream of consciousness that goes through moments of light and shadow, explicitly dreamlike and reflective breaks as well as impetuous and liberating rides. If keyboards and strings are suspended in a non-place made of dreams and rarefied beauty, guitars and the rhythm section bring us to the ground and let anger and fears run at breakneck speed over vast prairies, up to their very dissolution and dispersion. On this music that escapes pigeonholing within rigid labels (and also for this reason it acquires further charm), Aðalbjörn Tryggvason voice is an additional distinctive element and stands out for its multiform nature: warm, scratchy, sometimes melancholic, sometimes roaring, others almost epic (as, in some moments, the music from which it emerges). And if all eight songs are essential for the album, and each one is really in the right place at the right time, Bláfjall is definitely the peak and the perfect ending. A dream that is worth living and going through.
