The Warlocks + The Stevenson Ranch Davidians – 24.08.2019 - Privatclub (Berlino)

The Warlocks + The Stevenson Ranch Davidians – 24.08.2019 - Privatclub (Berlino)

E, come essa, rapisce.

The Warlocks + The Stevenson Ranch Davidians – 08.24.2019 - Privatclub (Berlino)

Red curtains on the stage, dim lights, and a band playing a delicate dreamy psychedelic rock. Thus the small Privatclub welcomes us. I may be influenced by this city, yet it seems to be in the scene of Der Himmel über Berlin, when the protagonist finds himself at a Nick Cave concert.

The Stevenson Ranch Davidians are the band welcoming us with a slide guitar liquefying the brit pop hints of their melodies. In just over half an hour I remain fascinated by the atmosphere created by the Californian band, which sways between Verve-like sing-songing melodies and distorted shoegaze dreams. Perhaps we are in the end credits of the latest Twin Peaks, rather than in the Wim Wenders movie.

With the first part of their set, The Warlocks seem to confirm this feeling. There are no noisy edges typical of From Her to Eternity in the Bobby Hecksher's band attack. They start with a psychedelic pop garage that tastes like a late 60s colorful candy. But the sweet taste of this candy becomes more and more bitter as it melts, while the colors become increasingly blinding. The three guitars raise a wall of sound that perfectly finds its home in this city. A wall with the colors of the rainbow, yet with rusty concrete splinters that pierce it everywhere. A music that collects and summarizes the contradictions of melody and noise, just like this city does. And, like this city, it kidnaps you.

Flipper + Heads. + Dysnea Boys - 20.08.2019 - Bi Nuu (Berlin)

Flipper + Heads. + Dysnea Boys - 20.08.2019 - Bi Nuu (Berlin)

Flipper + Heads. + Dysnea Boys - 08.20.2019 - Bi Nuu (Berlin)

Berlin is a city rebuilt on its wounds. The scars of the past appear everywhere in its streets, although the city has been able to reconcile the opposites and find new balances. Where subcultures and minorities now coexist, totalitarianisms had erased plurality. Tonight's concert could not take place in a more suitable city. Three bands that differently represent the present of the city (exchanges of ideas and collaborations) and show the wounds of the past (hard-edged guitars like rusty pieces of iron emerging from the Wall). And there could not have been a more suitable place than Bi Nuu: a venue under an S-Bahn station in the heart of Kreuzberg, with a typically Berliner underground atmosphere (Kreuzberg was in fact the heart of the community experiments of occupied houses in West Berlin during the 80s).

Dysnea Boys hardcore seems to come precisely from those squats that swarmed in the neighborhood in that decade. Angry and noisy, with the guitar often following the path of dissonance, but also with martial rhythms and dark atmospheres to the limits of post punk. The different origin of the 4 band members (USA, Canada, Scotland, Germany) is the confirmation that the strength of this city lies in the ability to integrate and rework the differences.

The Heads. (also based in Berlin and of various origins - 2 Germans and one Australian) play new millennium noise rock, with powerful distortions and devastating explosions in sludge style, but with a melodic taste reminiscent of 90s alternative rock. In their music there are Shellac and Helmet broken rhythms, the introspective moments of certain Swans and Godflesh post apocalyptic grandeur. All this makes them the most exciting surprise of the evening. Extraordinary!

If there is a music that represents the attempt to reconstruct a harmonic balance where dissonances seem to prevent it, that is the 80s/90s American noise rock. Flippers are here to prove it and, to confirm the spirit of collaboration of this evening, they are helped by Mike Watt (Minutemen) bass and David Yow (Jesus Lizard) voice. After making fun of Steve DePace wearing gloves to play drums, Ted Falconi starts playing chords that seem to repeat themselves endlessly with minimal (noisy) variations and soon we are hypnotized by this very old Dracula (directly from Francis Ford Coppola's movie) which seems to age more and more with the succession of chords. Suddenly David Yow appears on stage and the delirium starts. He throws himself on the audience and tries to be the most disturbing and slimy possible (just like his voice), embracing people to the limits of strangulation, pushing, touching, stealing objects and throwing them, throwing himself to the ground (always trying to drag someone with him). Everything sounds crooked and acid, but also exciting. Listening to Sacrifice (historical Flipper song made "famous" by Melvins) with David Yow delirious voice is undoubtedly the peak of the evening. But the craziest and most absurd thing is the (infinite) ending in which the concept of collaboration and participation is so extreme that it proves to be wacky funny: everybody on stage for a whistle-based refrain. A collective party.

Motorpsycho – The Crucible

Motorpsycho – The Crucible
(Stickman Records, 2019)

Motorpsycho – The Crucible
(Stickman Records, 2019)

50 years have passed since the first Big Bang generated by the Crimson King. Since then his majesty has manifested himself through other cosmic explosions, each capable of expanding the boundaries of the rock universe. But in the year 50 of the progressive calendar the Universe seems frozen. Robert Fripp communicates with his spirit guide only during concerts, and original songs are increasingly rare. Yet there is still someone who has the ability to present himself at the court of the King, to then return to our dimension bringing in a splendid gift of music. Motorpsycho are among these few. Long-time space explorers, these Norwegians go deeper and deeper into the progressive galaxy with The Crucible. Three long tracks whose labyrinthine architecture is in perfect balance despite the continuous movement. And this makes it a more cohesive record than the previous The Tower. Not a real Big Bang, but without a doubt the birth of a splendid star (yet another in the career of the Norwegian band). The vocal plots have the psychedelic flavour of Close to the Edge (Yes) and some nerve splinters seem to come from another primordial explosion, that of Pawn Hearts (Van Der Graaf Generator). Just as it had happened to Steven Wilson, another of the few contemporary musicians capable of transforming his own Crimsonian obsessions into high-level music, even the current Motorpsycho lacks the unpredictability and the ability to amaze typical of 70s prog, but certainly not the imagination and sensitivity of that era. The galaxies in which they accompany us are certainly not unexplored, but the sense of wonder that one feels in front of the melodies and atmospheres of The Crucible deserve a trip to the borders of the Universe.

I await OM advent in the Fortezza Vecchia in Livorno as a faithful devotee. The first miracle is their appearance among the ramparts of the historic fortification, a stone's throw from home. The prayers of all of us idolaters have been accepted and since the day of the annunciation they are anxiously awaited. Seven years have passed since their latest album and their latest appearance in Italy. Expectations are really high.

When, under the influence of Al Cisneros sinuous bass riffs, the walls begin to vibrate, it seems that these rhythmically release the heat accumulated in the long red-hot days of this torrid summer. I sway stunned by sultriness and psychedelia, and soon I find myself in a territory halfway between east and west, in that ancient Byzantium recalled by the band's artwork and by their music.
At times the distortion inflates the riffs to fill the space between the walls of the bastions, and it is beautiful to get lost in a sort of mystical trance. When the sounds of the bass guitar become more liquid and lighter, however, it lascks a bit of volume is and Emil Amos drums come in foreground and, being so complex and progressive, it takes away some of the necessary hypnotic circularity. But there is never the time to really wake up. I am always suspended in a kind of bubble where time flows in slow motion and the low sound of the om resounds in my brain. A mantra that perhaps would have needed actual bows to resound to its perfection, rather than their digital reconstruction on the keyboard. What really matters, however, is that at the end of meditation I abandoned all rational superstructure and every critical judgment and let myself go to the flow of sensations. Ok, to be honest a bit of rationality remained in me (unlike what happens to me when I listen to their music on recording) and this is perhaps the only reason why I can't shout at the miracle even though it has been a really exciting concert. As a faithful devotee I await a new advent, for a new meditation.

Devil Master – Satan Spits on Children of Light

Devil Master – Satan Spits on Children of Light
(Relapse Records, 2019)

Devil Master – Satan Spits on Children of Light
(Relapse Records, 2019)

Six kids dressed as demons in such a graceless, gaudy and unintentionally ridiculous way that they were certainly not helped by their mother for this (musical, as well as purely aesthetic) disguise. I imagine them out in the streets of Philadelphia on Halloween night, mocked by their peers. Their lo-fi style makes them losers in the eyes of 2019 bullies. But Relapse is the elder brother defending them and, after having reprinted the songs from their demos with the compilation Manifestations (2018), makes them debut with an album which seems to have been recorded at Uncle Creepy's home. Devil Master's tales from the crypt echo like the worst early 80s sonic nightmares, while mosquitoish distortions crumble the eardrums. But a veil of flanger, spread over the riffs like a spider web, softens the edges and makes the atmosphere vaguely psychedelic. In this fog colours are mixed without any respect for consonances, generating a chaos that possesses the fury of the Japanese hardcore and the bloodthirsty delirium of the first Mayhem, but also the melodic sensitivity of a post punk band (or that of a Hammer midnight movie). In this impulsive disharmony, typical of kids overflowing with creativity, lies the beauty of this absurd theater of horrors, absolutely perfect for Halloween night.

Ufomammut + Black Rainbows - Rural Rock Days - Day 2 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

Ufomammut + Black Rainbows - Rural Rock Days - Day 2 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

Ufomammut + Black Rainbows - Rural Rock Days - Day 2 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

A friend in need is a friend indeed. And after ASG rip-off just a few days before the event, Rural Rock Days needs a helping hand. To offer it are Ufomammut, who come from this land and who grew up in this scene. Together with them, to face the expected storm, another Italian band: Black Rainbows. The bad weather forecasts have discouraged most of tonight's potential attendees, but Cascina Bellaria covered stage (even more protective than the one of the previous evening) offers shelter to an audience that, although not very numerous, proves to be extremely warm and passionate.

Black Rainbows iperfuzzy adrenaline-filled stoner contributes to tonight's party atmosphere. With a set full of groove and energy, with ample space/psychedelic digressions, the Romans exalt and confirm how unjustly they are underestimated by much of the Italian rock audience (certainly not by those who were present tonight!).

If there is a band that over the years has rightly managed to reap what it has sown, that is called Ufomammut. And even tonight, after a 20-year career, finally universally recognized as one of the most important in the heavy psych scene, the band from Tortona puts its heart and soul in this gig in front of a few friends. In some ways the emotional impact of such an intimate concert is even more intense than that generated on a huge stage, possibly shared with bands such Yob and Neurosis. At the end of the sonic storm generated by the trio, we are stunned by how much this music that seems to come from another universe, can sound warm, human, alive.

Nashville Pussy + Sacri Monti - Rural Rock Days - Day 1 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

Nashville Pussy + Sacri Monti - Rural Rock Days - Day 1 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

Lemmy li aveva definiti l’ultima grande rock n’roll band d’America, serve altro?

Nashville Pussy + Sacri Monti - Rural Rock Day 1 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

Rurality means working hard, with honesty, and being able to organize to deal with (meteorological, but not only!) unexpected events. This is why I trust the festival organized by Cascina Bellaria right from the start. It will not be a band ripping-off the event a few days before it, or the not really encouraging weather forecasts, to stop a festival with a genuine spirit like this.

Sacri Monti are the first to go on stage. Stage that this time gives shelter to musicians, precisely because of the possible storm. But lightnings are kept at a safe distance thanks to the psychedelic hard rock of the San Diego band. The continuous chasing of solos and the spirals of reverberations stun even more than the craft beer filling the brains of audience. Yet nobody ever loses orientation, because songs run straight and solid, following dynamics and crescendos on the edge of the most robust prog. I am pleasantly surprised by this unexpected connection between the sun of the Californian beaches and the fog of early 70s hard prog (Captain Beyond, High Tide, just to name a couple of bands), the latter being not so evident in the band's debut album. Perhaps part of the credit goes to the Piedmontese hills lit by a strange summer light seeping in through the black clouds. Great concert!

After Sacri Monti checked shirts and their worn attitude so much reminiscent of early 90s Seattle, we are catapulted into the most exhibitionist 80s thanks to Nashville Pussy. But that decade cock rock is turned upside down into a pussy rock that is as much excessive as it is self-deprecating and funny. The four exalt - yet at the same time desecrate - the myth of rock n roll (boobs in the wind and whiskey drunk from the hat, but also few hair and decidedly reinforced bottoms exhibited with pride) bringing it back to its primitive visceral nature. Musically uncontainable, they spit out alcohol and energy through their riffs, and you cannot but let yourself get carried away, even when the first raindrops begin to fall. Their music is sweaty and concrete, perfect for turning the evening into a party. Lemmy said they were America's last great rock'n'roll band, need anything else?
