Nudist - 18.11.2017 - Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Nudist - 18.11.2017 - Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Nudist - 11.18.2017 - Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

Who could imagine that aluminum could sound so scorching? That a riff, sharp like steel, could burn your flesh and tear it away as if it was a bite? The many shades hidden behind Nudist noisy post-hardcore reveal themselves through tools designed and built by the band guitarist, in which aluminum and wood coexist and create a sound that is synthesis of the contrasts between its components. For this metal/organic matter hybrid, there can be no more suitable place of expression than Ganz of Bicchio. The tiny club born from the ashes of an old warehouse is able to contain the cold of the underground and the warmth of a family room with fireplace, with a terrific (sonic) firepower and with a very good balance. Here, tonight, the disturbing dissonances of the trio from Florence take form. And here the most bestial fury coexist with the passionate heat of the melody. Stunning controtempo, yet always rich in groove, surgical precision, rhythmic and harmonic unpredictability reminiscent of the rusty noise of Unsane and Steve Albini's bands. The whole made heavier in post-metal style. At the end of the night I discover that aluminum burns more than wood.

Siena Root – A Dream of Lasting Peace

Siena Root – A Dream of Lasting Peace
(MIG, 2017)

Siena Root – A Dream of Lasting Peace
(MIG, 2017)

In spite of its name, Hard rock is not rigid at all. It is actually mouldable like clay and, if shaped by skilled hands, it can take on ever new shapes, even though the basic ingredients are always the same. In recent times, Northern Europe (in particular Sweden) has become a real lab for manipulation of sound matter, which has been repeatedly bring back to its original matrix (blues), and then rebuilt according to well-established techniques of the 60s and 70s, with surprisingly lively engaging results. Siena Root are certainly not the latest in this path, and with their A Dream of Lasting Peace they celebrate the sixth full length in the studio. Although they come from the cold Stockholm, the five musicians mix a blues clay that has the warm color of the soil from Siena (the English umber), made of songs where the organ often wins the duel with the guitar, hinting at the freedom of improvisation, yet never weakening the organic unity of songs. To give shape to the soil, the five use their solid roots, made up of woody knots where the sound of Deep Purple and Cream (and many others contemporaries, as you can easily realize from the album cover, abounding of explicit quotations) are interwoven. A week away from the chaotic rhythms of the new millennium, isolated in the desolate lands of the North, to capture the spirit of a distant era, mix its constitutive ingredients and create gorgeous rock songs once again. Proof that also rock is mouldable.

It's one of those just perfect and unmissable events. One of your favorite bands beginning its new European tour right from your city and from its only truly rock venue.

It is also the first ever concert with the new drummer, replacing JD Shadowz, unfortunately unable to leave the States for this tour. And so, despite having already seen them live four times in just over a year, this fifth live still has the flavour of novelty and is imbued with expectations.

As soon as they get on Albatross stage, Duel immediately made it clear that they are going to kick the ass tonight too. The attack is a hat-trick of their first, amazing, album Fears of the Dead, before giving way to the title track of the new Witchbanger. Firm the keystones of the band, Justin Collins on the drum is a winning card, mighty and with great groove, able to balance out the absence of the official drummer (not an obvious thing, given JD's skill and stage presence).

With a setlist fishing almost equally from the two album - and almost in their entirety - the Austin band rattles of groove, riffs and solos in great quantity, thus overheating the atmosphere of Cafè Albatross and its truly super-participant and highly prepared audience. Tracks run one after the other in rapid succession, without dead moments and always with great groove. The heavy psych peak is the grand finale with the beautiful Tigers and Rainbows flowing into the (for me) even more amazing Locked Outside - one of those songs that seems to be specially made to close concerts, leaving you with the desire to listen to another one (and another and another!).

The fifth time I hear them live in just over a year and a half and two killer albums in their discography, to confirm Duel as a great live band - both on a big renowned stage (like the Canyon Stage at Desertfest Antwerp) and on the stage of a small club like Cafè Albatross. Who has still not listened to them live, remedy absolutely in one of the next imminent dates!

Paradise Lost – The Plague Within

Paradise Lost – The Plague Within
(Century Media, 2015)

Mai, però, i Paradise Lost avevano suonato così diretti e impetuosi.

ParadiseLost – The Plague Within
(Century Media, 2015)

The fountain of eternal youth. Paradise Lost drunk its water, recovering their lost paradise. Gradually back to the path of their death/doom beginnings, gothic metal fathers suddenly come back to their adolescence with unmanageable strength thanks to a massive muscular album like The Plague Within. But it is undeniable that the many experiences collected in more than a quarter of a century of career are certainly not lost. Sensitivity for romantic melodies does not fade behind mastodontic riffs, just as Nick Holmes clean voice is not overwhelmed by his angry growl - which here comes back protagonist as it has not been for years. Though Paradise Lost had never been so direct and impetuous. In a young and strong body, the mature mind creates an album which looks forward and is never nostalgically anchored to the past. From the first (exciting!) riff of No Hope In Sight to the epic and tragic crescendo of Return to the Sun, through the oppressive and funereal pace of Beneath Broken Earth or the devastating one of Flesh from Bones, each song runs like an overflowing - emotional - river, swamping everything it finds along its path. Moments of reflection nest in the romantic interweavings drawn by the phrasings of the two guitars, but even the most meditative moments have got a strength and determination that would never be expected by musicians for so many years on the scene. A rebirth, under a dress that is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating ever worn by the band.

Paradise Lost - Medusa

Paradise Lost - Medusa
(Nuclear Blast, 2017)

Pietrificati.

Paradise Lost - Medusa
(Nuclear Blast, 2017)

Petrified. Medusa's paralyzing gaze becomes flesh in the heavy oppressive riffs of Paradise Lost fifteenth album, and immobilises us with slow rhythms and mastodontic distortions. A magnetic and nihilistic look lettings us face the depressing reality of a meaningless universe. True to his romantic ideals, the band from Halifax struggles not to cross the Gorgon's gaze (sometimes relying on ancient pagan gods, sometimes through a dogged tension towards the absolute), but the attempt is destined to fail (after all, it is a band faithful to its doom ideals). Greg Mackintosh & co put into music this titanic clash between cosmic impotence and desire for deliverance through the irrational with the most extreme album they ever conceived, a return to the death/doom metal origins where distressing exhaustion and overwhelming power coexist. On the one hand, burial atmospheres, overwhelming riffs, melancholy phrasings and growl coming from the afterworls, on the other a immense vital energy. After the rebirth, through The Plague Within (2015), Paradise Lost close a circle, returning to the atmosphere of the early 90s, yet with a strenght and passion that are sons of the present.

Wolves in the Throne Room – Thrice Woven

Wolves in the Throne Room – Thrice Woven
(Artemisia Records, 2017)

Wolves in the Throne Room – Thrice Woven
(Artemisia Records, 2017)

After a period of proud isolation during which they had abandoned the atmospheric explorations of their black metal in favour of a psychedelic ambient so deeply immersed in the depths of the Cosmos as far away from those ones of the Man, Weaver brothers compose a work that finds its strength in the spirit of the human community and in its ancient myths. Thrice Woven awakes black metal outbursts of the past, but at the same time it enriches them with atmospheres which are conceivable only for those who have embarked on a both artistic and spiritual journey. Forty-five minutes during which the falls of gelid guitar riffs alternate with wide openings of synth and with the intimate warmth of an acoustic guitar. A musical wealth that not only reproduces the natural wealth of wild unspoiled environment that has always fascinated the band from Washington State, but that also seems to recall the wealth of a community which is antithetical to the society and values of the modern era, and which draws strength from an ancient mythology. To this end you have to consider the mystical litany of Anna Von Hausswolff and the recall of Steve Von Till at a time when the thaw and the resulting awakening of Nature represented a real revival for the whole community. For Wolves in the Throne Room the rejection of contemporary materialism goes through a spiritual quest to investigate what is hidden beyond the visible. This research also goes through reminders of cultures which are distant hundreds of years and thousands of miles - such as the Norwegian one - to prove that it is not in individualism that Weaver brothers are looking for a way of liberation, yet in the recovery of a primordial spirit, naturally present in the Man. If Wolves in the Throne Room have always awaken the dark energy of a mysterious and savage world ruled by laws of Nature, this time they seem more than ever able to tell such forces with the knowledge of a shaman who has absorbed them deeply and who is now ready to share them with other soul mates.

Motorpsycho - 04.11.2017 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Motorpsycho - 04.11.2017 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Motorpsycho - 11.04.2017 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Nothing superfluous, everything is essential. This is the thought that slowly got way in my head during the 2 hour and 30 minutes Motorpsycho concert. And this is not of little significance. Especially if you think of all the ultra-positive advertising that had anticipated this event. Everyone - none excluded! - talked about an impressive unforgettable concert, a matchless live. The risk of disappointment was therefore one step away: easy to remain unfulfilled after such an enthusiastic preparation. Absolutely not, instead. All I was told found exact correspondence in a performance that confirmed all the positive judgments and - from a strictly personal and emotional point of view - also overcame them.

More than a concert, an experience. Accustomed to bands usually playing no more than an hour, an hour and a half, it's really amazing to be faced with a trio that shows off a set that lasts nearly twice the time and that never suffers from falls of intensity. You reach the end of the long setlist without ever having realized that you remained wonderstruck for its whole duration with eyes fixed on the stage and ears stretched towards each single note. In this timespan a multitude of sensations have crossed and - in my case - exalted the audience. They range from musical compositions that seem almost like soundtracks, to songs that are as powerful and enthralling as only some pieces of psychedelic hard rock are. There are crescendo that surpass the beauty of that post-rock à la GY! BE, and dilatations knocking on the door of the Crimson King. All this thanks to the incredible - technical, but also expressive - skill of three Norwegian musicians (assisted by a great session man on keyboards, trumpet, guitar and choirs) as you will rarely find around.

The setlist largely - and rightly - focuses on the brand new The Tower. But with about twenty albums, the band from Trondheim is spoilt for choice, and it spans up and down almost thirty years of history, picking also from 90s records. And - as in the concert of exactly the week before (Paradise Lost, even them a thirty-year-old band!) - the amazing thing is the perfect mix of past and present, of the childhood of the band and its full maturity, through all its evolutionary phases. All this with a variety of sound, genres and solutions that is really impressive and counts few competitors.

This was my first (!!!) Motorpsycho concert. Now I cannot wait to hear them live again!
