The Obsessed - Sacred

The Obsessed – Sacred
(Relapse Records, 2017)

The Obsessed – Sacred
(Relapse Records, 2017)

Beyond the Ocean, far from foggy moors and British Celtic cemeteries, as well as far from the wild landscapes of Northern Europe, doom metal has planted its roots in the slums of American metropolis thanks to characters like Scott "Wino" Weinrich. Icon of the most sulphurous heavy metal since the second half of the 70s, Wino is American to the marrow, to the point of instilling a specific star and strip personality to all of his projects. In 2017, with the help of some of his Spirit Caravan buddies, Wino resurrects (again, after some reunion shows a few years ago) one of his cult bands, the Obsessed, and records an album that could not be born in any other place other than in the New World. Sacred is "arrogant" hard rock - so full of itself, as full of fat distortions, excellent riffs and catchy refrains. Wino is the obscure and disturbing face of the classic American vintage rocker (as Lemmy was). A dirty veteran voice in which the soul of the motorcyclist and the expressive depth of the crooner coexist. And also his guitar contrasts adrenaline-filled exhibitionism and veiled obscurity. In Sacred Wino has no intention of renewing his own style or rejuvenating a genuinely canonized genre such as the classic doom. Indeed he wants to honour it (just think that Sodden Jackal, amazing opening song, is the remake of the first song of the debut EP), anchoring it even more to its 70s roots (the cover of It's Only Money by Thin Lizzy makes explicit what is clear throughout the album). Sacred is a sincere homage to the smell of alcohol and foggy smog saturating US suburbs - constant source of inspiration for Wino even more than the lonely landscapes and cemeteries.

Depeche Mode - Violator

Depeche Mode - Violator
(1990, Mute)

Depeche Mode - Violator
(1990, Mute)

Symbol of 80s music, synth pop reaches one of its highest peaks at the dawn of the new decade with the seventh Depeche Mode album. Just a moment before the sound of distorted guitars sweeps away the entire genre. Intimate and mysterious, Violator bans romantic excesses and dives into introspective music of the new era. Thanks to skillful sound finish realized by Flood, Violator projects Depeche Mode into the future, while connecting them to their ancestors ("Heroes" by David Bowie, for example). A dark flow sliding in perfect equilibrium among immediate melodies, complex arrangements, addictive rhythmic and charming atmospheres. If we had to find the killer of synthetic 80s sounds, maybe we would discover that it was not only alternative rock, but also the abyssal depth of Violator.

Pontiak - Dialectic of Ignorance

Pontiak - Dialectic of Ignorance
(Thrill Jockey, 2017)

Dallo slow stoner di Herb Is My Next Door Neighbor all'oscurità post punk di We've Fucked This Up, attraversiamo continuamente nuovi paesaggi, nelle sterminate terre selvagge americane, utilizzando sempre sentieri poco battuti.

Pontiak - Dialectic of Ignorance
(Thrill Jockey, 2017)

Three brothers living and working in a farm in the heart of Virginia on the Blue Ridge Mountains. Far from the chaos of the big cities, focused on the production of handcrafted beers and on long psychedelic jam sessions in the homemade studio. Almost one episode of Little House on the Prairie, with Neil Young albums instead of prayers in front of a table laden with food. With Dialectic of Ignorance, Carney brothers family saga reaches the eighth full-length episode. Like Ingalls family of the tv series (and of the novel, before), also Carney family must face the dark side of rural life to keep their idyllic and bucolic way of life. In this episode, the three bearded Americans take a journey through misty and isolated landscapes, inhabited only by the ghosts of the Native Americans. The music runs smoothly at a slow pace that our senses of citizens are not used to perceive (unless under the influence of certain substances). Obsessive riffs, rich in fuzz, repeat themselves circularly while the rhythm flows soft and enveloping, expanding melodies. In the psychedelic mist, melodic breaks of great peace and brightness (the interweavings of whispered voices) of shoegaze taste. But the feeling of stunning and weird anxiety about what we can not see, beyond the horizon, shows how much this is an album far from the stereotypes of musical genres. From the slow stoner of Herb Is My Next Door Neighbor to the post punk darkness of We've Fucked This Up, we're continually crossing new landscapes in the endless American wilderness, always using scarcely traced paths. Let's hope this saga, like that of the Ingalls, will continue for another 200 episodes.

Pallbearer - Heartless

Pallbearer - Heartless
(Profound Lore Records, Nuclear Blast, 2017)

Pallbearer - Heartless
(Profound Lore Records, Nuclear Blast, 2017)

The ritual of waiting. Like when a thunderstorm is approaching. Black clouds swelling, travelling in a moment the space between the horizon and our heads. Smell of moisture in the air, wind suddenly blowing. Electricity. This is Heartless. Not a violent storm like the previous Foundations of Burden, yet a gloomy and vaguely disturbing quiet, with the ghost of the squall costantly nearer. The mastodontic riffs of the previous album, which had made it one of the best metal records in recent years, are fragmented here, dilated and reworked along melodic tracks closer to progressive metal than to the doom of the past. The phrasings and interweavings of the two guitars (always a trademark of the band from Arkansas) are the real load-bearing architecture on which the seven - imposing - songs are built and on which Brett Campbell voice climbs towards ever higher tones and increasingly epic and impressive melodies. The fevering waiting that has anticipated the third release of the band will find vent for old fans in this album based on the sense of wait and preferring to flow among enveloping atmospheres (the dreamlike introduction of Dancing in Madness) rather than deflagrate in blows of great impact and power? For an underground environment that recently has rarely been exalted as much as listening to the first two records of the band, it will not be easy to feel rewarded by this transformation, which has led to the complete abandonment of post metal aftertaste in favour of a melodic sensitivity alike that one of Queensrÿche in the late 80s. Wait and absence of frenzy: this is what a monumental album like Heartless needs to be absorbed. The maturity of the melodies of I Saw the End, Thorns and Heartless are the best demonstration of the titanic personality of Pallbearer, a band out of the predetermined genres, which is confirmed as one of the most capable in combining classic and modern.

Celeste - 23.09.2017 - Alchemica (Bologna)

Celeste - 23.09.2017 - Alchemica (Bologna)

Buio in sala.

Celeste - 09.23.2017 - Alchemica (Bologna)

Dark in the hall. Dark on stage. So much smoke to form a dense fog. One, two, three, four headlamps with red light turn on in sequence. And then it's the apocalypse. There is very little celestial in the French Celeste. More than suspended in the empyrean sky, we are sunk into the underground. It seems to be inside a tunnel in the depths of a mine. Little air, and a strong sense of oppression. Almost of dismay. The one and only compass available are the the dim beams of red light of the four Charon driving us into what seems a narrow infernal cavity. The attacks of the quartet are implacable and deadly. Drums is at the same time the foundations and the columns of the compositions of the French combo. The two guitars and the bass build walls and bridges of riffs in which we wander lost, crushed, but at the same time bewitched. Only 50 minutes, flying away in a moment. The music over, the lights turned on again, it is like breathing again after a long apnoea. It's like feeling more free, lighter. Exiting from Alchemica, the darkness of the night suddenly appears more celestial.

King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard – Flying Microtonal Banana

King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard – Flying Microtonal Banana
(Heavenly Recordings, Flightless Records, ATO Records, 2017)

I King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard l’hanno trovata. Magari in frammenti diversi l’uno dall’altro.

King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard – Flying Microtonal Banana
(Heavenly Recordings, Flightless Records, ATO Records, 2017)

There is a simple solution to disintegrate the cliché "now rock music is always the same, no one invents anything, after all notes are just seven".  King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard found it. Only the inventors of  really alternative sounds like them could accomplish this experiment. Just crumble every note into tiny pieces, each octave into fragments much smaller of the 12 semitones that serve as the basis of western music. Possibly in fragments which are different from each other. To do this, the seven Australian fools have made special microtonal instruments, and then they used them to compose obsessive songs that sounds constantly "wrong" to our rock-listeners-ears, for their continuous and unusual use of dissonances. Dadaist songs that possess the joyful desire to play with conventions, typical of Canterbury prog or kraut rock. Certainly, the patent of this invention cannot be given to these queer musicians - just think of most part of oriental music (the echo of which resounds more than once in this record, not only for the use of the Turkish zurna) - but the "typically" (psychedelic) rock development of such harmonic progression is undoubtedly original. But we are not in front of a mere style exercise. Harmoniously tangled in cascading dissonances, the drunken rhymes enter the head and passionate from the very beginning, showing how much the focus is first and foremost on songs. As with any good rock record, in short. And now there are four more experiments planned by the band for 2017. We are ready, everything could happen.

Elder – Reflections of a Floating World

Elder – Reflections of a Floating World
(Stickman Records, 2017)

Elder – Reflections of a Floating World
(Stickman Records, 2017)

In an era when music is devoured compulsively and distractedly, with the idea that music should be shaped by our sensitivity (and not, on the contrary, that our sensitivity should mature through music), Reflections of a Floating World is a revolutionary album in its own way. It is an album that needs a deep immersion, with wide open doors of perception, to absorb the complex sonic ocean that characterizes it. Six long contorted tracks, real coral reefs of progressive rock, within which it is wonderful to be carried away by the currents of the stoner riffs. But even more remarkable is to drown into them when vast pinkfoydian views open themselves in front of us. In these 10s where artwork is reduced to tiny jpeg files in our smartphone while listening to mp3s, it may sound like a nostalgic and "moralistic" act towards the present time to take the vinyl of Reflections of a Floating World in your hands, discard it, sniff it and, even before putting it onto the turntable, enter the floating world pictured on its cover. Yet the freshness of its songs shows how much this appeal to a typically 70s way of living the music has nothing to do with revivalism. Elder personality is much more solid than a superficial listener - who merely acknowledges High Tide guitar frenzy or Nektar and Camel melodic openings - may perceive. Elder do not oppose the present. In the impetuosity of their roaring waterfall of notes there is all the creativity and the overflowing energy of a current and present time. Breaking like a wave on the rocks of the past, all the impetus of "here and now" absorbs its essence and then vaporizes in unpredictable and unrepeatable sketches. Being on the shore of this floating world, and being overwhelmed by this wave, will make our sensitivity mature, and ourselves too.
