Roadburn Festival 2017 – Day 1

Roadburn Festival 2017 – Day 1
[Bongzilla + Deafheaven + Coven + Pinkish Black + SubRosa + Wretch]

La band di Salt Lake City dedica il concerto all'esecuzione integrale dell'ultimo album (For This We Fought the Battle of Ages), riuscendo a rendere ancor più possente, maestosa ed emozionante un’opera in sé tanto complessa.

Bottom of the Morning, title track dell’ultimo bellissimo album, è l’apice (di negatività).

Roadburn Festival 2017 – Day 1
[Bongzilla + Deafheaven + Coven + Pinkish Black + SubRosa + Wretch]

It's been about 10 years since the first - failed! - attempt to go to Roadburn. On the opening day of the pre-sale tickets volatilized in less than half an hour low, leaving us dry mouth. Since then, the Dutch festival has expanded its capacity (currently more than 4,000 daily participants) and has abandoned the scepter of one and only European festival devoted to the border territory among stoner, doom and psychedelia - and this let now possible to obtain a ticket. In addition to this, over the last ten years Roadburn has also expanded and further faceted its personality by increasingly moving into the universe of experimental, progressive and avant-garde music. The 2017 edition explores in particular the most psychedelic and visionary explorations of black metal, without losing its heavy psych imprint.

We travel to Tilburg by car: a 1300-kilometer trip through snow buffs in the Swiss segment until Basel (anticipation of the black metal to come) and queues of trucks at the Gotthard tunnel and along the Dutch roads (anticipation of the pachydermic doom to come). Roadburn is a journey, an experience, not a simple concert. Since leaving home. Even more so if it has been waited almost ten years.

Finally parked the car a few meters away from the legendary Poppodium 013 (heart of the festival) and grabbed in a few moments the wristband key to the various venues of the event, we are captured by the first distorted sounds coming from a (now ex-) church.

Once inside Het Patronaat we find Wretch on stage. Our baptism at Roadburn takes place in the most classic of the ways: no experimentation, pure doom metal. Their music is daughter of Saint Vitus and Pentagram, with some  space rock hints enriching a classic traditional heavy metal. And it is precisely in those stonerish less cadenced passages that (former Gates of Slumber) Karl Simon and Chris Gordon band proves to be more effective. But what it is really striking is above all the beautiful setting of the Het Patronaat, a musical hall made out of the highest part of a - now deconsecrated - northern parish church with the ceiling of woody beams, with the small stage inside the apse and mosaic glass windows fragmenting daylight and giving an abstract atmosphere.

Our journey continues with a visit to Main Stage at 013. It's just mid-afternoon on the first day, but when SubRosa attack Despair is a Siren bass line it's immediately evident that we are in front of one of the top apexes of this twenty-first edition of the festival. The Salt Lake City band dedicates the concert to the full performance of their latest album (For This We Fought the Battle of Ages), making even more powerful, majestic and exciting a work that is in itself already much complex. After the first few minutes, the guitar conquers that giant sound it has in the album recordings, violins are enchanting so much intense they sound and the interweaving of the voices is simply perfect. The gorgeous projections, together with the an unexpected (voice and transverse flute) guest, enhance an already memorable concert already. Immense.

It's a real race the one we run to listen to Pinkish Black. Only 10 minutes of stopwatch separate the latest vibrations of SubRosa violins and the first synthetic drones of the Texan band. Wolves in the Throne Room on the Main Stage makes it possible to win a place in the tiny Extase: an extremely intimate, slightly claustrophobic venue where we find ourselves stuck one another under a very low ceiling. The atmosphere is vaguely asphyxiating: ideal to enjoy the pessimism and oppression induced by Pinkish Black walls of synths and horror movie atmospheres. Their music sounds even more hallucinatory, hallucinating and gloomy than on recordings. A real breath of depression. Bottom of the Morning, title track of their latest beautiful album, is the climax (of negativity). In short, a great concert!

Resumed the breath, we so upstairs on the Main Stage balcony to attend the "return" of the Coven. More than a return, their first ever concert in Europe is a resurgence. A coffin stands at the center of the stage, and out of it comes Jynx Dawson, iconic character who is a fundamental model and point of reference in this particularly successful age for "female" occult rock. Geological eras have passed since their seminal debut album (Witchcraft Destroys Mind and Reaps Souls, 1969) and in the meantime magnetic Jynx has become a sort of "Patty Pravo of horror rock" and her newcomer guitarist Ricktor Ravensbrück performs in "adolescent tantrums" (after repeated discussions with the guitar technician - according to him responsible for the problems of the six strings - he abandons the stage for 2-3 songs in protest). However, theirs is an entertaining hard rock gig with vaguely horror dark tones, devoid of those scenery and rituals extensively described in past chronicles, yet still funny. Jynx voice is no longer that of a time, and her character has inevitably turned from "fatal femme" to "old lady of rock". Time does not scratch the myth, beyond the obvious signs of its inexorable flow.

Completely different the atmospheres created by Deafheaven. Musically compact and powerful, with sounds of surgical precision and riffs that are real bursts of machine gun, but through which you can see precious melodies and breath breaks on the edge of post rock. George Clark is impeccable and uses his voice with great skill. Not only that: like the music of his band, he breaks all conventions related to metal, with schizophrenic attitudes and ballets, sometimes unintentionally funny. The contrast between violent (more devastating than expected) fury and "romance" is their strength.

If, during the whole day, no cloud of smoke had risen in the halls of the various venues, we should expect that Bongzilla concert would have suddenly reversed the trend. As soon as the American band attacks the dilated and heavy riffs of Gateway (2002 album), a fog of marijuana invades 013. Between a snarl and the other in the microphone, Muleboy, asks for joints in the first rows, offering in change some more songs. If this could cause concern for the performance of the band, Bongzilla concert instead finds the fuel necessary to play fiercely powerful and successful exactly for his reason. After Weedeater alcoholism at the Belgian Desertfest last October, Bongzilla weed "addiction" proves (if there was any need for it!) how much excesses are doing well to a musical genre like sludge/stoner doom. Cult video of anti-marijuana propaganda, ironically projected behind the band, make even more funny a really doped and rotting concert, and are the perfect "ending theme" of this first, extraordinary, day of Roadburn!

Capt Crunch and The Bunch – 15.04.2017 – Borderline Club (Pisa)

Capt Crunch and The Bunch – 15.04.2017 – Borderline Club (Pisa)

Capt Crunch and The Bunch – 04.15.2017 – Borderline Club (Pisa)

It’s Easter Eve, and what's better than the release party of Capt Crunch and The Bunch first album to sanctify the feast day?!
Borderline Club - historical venue in Pisa - is the perfect frame for a band that counts in its lines historical characters from the local musical scene (as Andrea "Vipera" Salani - ex CCM, I Refuse It!, Fase Quattro).
Spiced with psych splashes and crossed by a thick blues texture, the successful captivating mix of garage and beat finds in the live dimension its most beautiful expression.
The groove of the five combo is captivating and engaging. Bass and drums mark the dynamics and dictate the pace of the band. On the microphone, the Captain alternates bluesman passages to more catchy (pure rocker style) ones and also harmonica parts. Emiliano "Er Biacco" Marianelli guitar (as well as his scenic presence) enthralls the audience with its really intense groove.
Crimine Beat is out now, just waiting to be listened to... even better if in front of a stage, with a beer in your hand!

Unearthly Trance – Stalking the Ghost

Unearthly Trance – Stalking the Ghost
(Relapse Records, 2017)

Unearthly Trance – Stalking the Ghost
(Relapse Records, 2017)

“Sludge has exhausted its thrust and has nothing more to offer. It has now become a caricature of what it originally was, and it survives only because of the hype. All these bands who compete to have the fattest sound, the most annoying feedback, the more catarrh-covered vocal cords, they have now fed up everybody!" It’s all true, no doubt. Then I put in the stereo Stalking the Ghost and I find myself headbanging like a teenager so great it is the intensity exploding out of the speakers. I cannot resist. Because if with its sixth album the New York band does not add anything new to a recently overcrowded genre, it is undoubtedly true that it raises the hairs on the neck so much it exudes groove and filth. As if Eyehategod were cleansing themselves of their heroin drug addiction with tons of marijuana kindly offered by Electric Wizard. As if Neurosis, between a mystical vision and an extracorporeal experience, would see for a few moment how disgusting reality is, on suggestion of the early Machine Head. Unearthly Trance riffs do not rely entirely on mammoth sounds (as far as they are so), yet and mostly on energy, (slowed) groove and (gloomy and hallucinated) atmosphere. Released seven years  after their last work (time for the band to conceive 2 albums as Serpentine Path incorporating former Electric Wizard Tim Bagshaw in the band), Stalking the Ghost stands out in the sludge metal muddy ocean because it is direct and engaging, thanks to songs with a great groove, a considerable amount of malice and perversion, and immediate (yet not banal) melodies. Oh yes, I did it again! Another sludge album that proves that the genre is far from dead.

Subrosa - For This We Fought the Battle of Ages

Subrosa - For This We Fought the Battle of Ages
(Profound Lore, 2016)

Subrosa - For This We Fought the Battle of Ages
(Profound Lore, 2016)

Destroying the personality of the individual, to make the community a huge cold-hearted machine, made of replaceable gears and parts. Subrosa puts into music the distopic (and revealing) visions of Soviet writer Yevgeny Zamyatin. With his novel We - published in England in the 20s - he imagined a world where emotions and passions are banned, made of glass - completely transparent - so that the Power could control every individual action. The Salt Lake City band models its gothic and apocalyptic doom metal on the atmospheres of the novel. Music is as heavy and oppressive as the grasp imposed by a state demanding to control every action of any individual. But it is at the same time emotional, romantic and warm, like the desire for rebellion and dissent creeping into some - isolated - rebels. Neurosis magmatic explosions are the passionate reaction for the annihilation of freedom. The vibrant flames of violins (at times reminiscent of the gothic theatrical doom of My Dying Bride) are the release of a repressed emotion. Happiness is not in that muffled world preventing us from accessing deeper emotions (such as pain), but in the freedom of choice, however painful and difficult it could be. Freedom defines our personality. Great Subrosa artistic freedom is proof of their gigantic personality.

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
(Peaceville, 1993)

My Dying Bride - Turn Loose the Swans
(Peaceville, 1993)

While many musicians transform death metal into a complex and cerebral music, My Dying Bride reinterpret the genre with exhausting slowdowns and romantic atmospheres worthy of a gothic novel. Perfect marriage between sepulchral doom metal heaviness and fascinating violin and piano melodies, Turn Loose the Swans is visceral thanks to death metal origins of the band. It’s an extreme and difficult opus to absorb, but its intensity and drama are also the weapons that make it unique. Stainthorpe voice alternates growling laments with recited moans, and the result is a theatrical interpretation of desolation, a misty sonic flow that, together with Paradise Lost and Anathema ones, will define a new style in gothic music.

The Black Delta Movement + Il Reparto Psichiatrico – 28.03.2017 – Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

The Black Delta Movement + Il Reparto Psichiatrico – 28.03.2017 – Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

The Black Delta Movement + Il Reparto Psichiatrico – 03.28.2017 – Ganz of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

The tiny cosy Ganz of Bicchio is the ideal venue to enjoy a psychedelic rock dish flavoured with as gigantic as wrapping walls of sounds, like those ones cooked by The Black Delta Movement.

Before them, the appetizer is served by Il Reparto Psichiatrico, from Lucca. The very young band offers us a succulent mix of 60s psychedelic pop and singer/songwriting rock. The “Syd Barrett” of the band (voice and guitar) releases acid rhymes bringing us into a fantastic world similar to the dreams of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderlands. A well balanced - yet properly hallucinogenic - keyboard spices the songs, enriching a very melodic and catchy music, but not for that not fascinating.

The British The Black Delta Movement strike the gustative papillas with much stronger and more determined flavors. Like a sort of extremely hot pepper, an avalanche of distortion makes you lose space-time coordinates. And you really need the groove and power of the drummer (essential and powerful à la Dave Grohl, but also hypercinetic à la Keith Moon) to keep our feet on the ground. Their “starred chefs” trick comes out from the combination of two seemingly antithetical ingredients such as melody and noise, and it is inspired both by their renowned masters such as The Velvet Underground and The Doors and by neo-psychedelia and (especially!) The Black Angels. Food that gives energy to muscles, mind and dreams. Strongly recommended, and not only tasting their studio recordings, yet making a big feed of their live show!

Candlemass + Hooded Menace + Shores of Null + Naga – 25.03.2017 – Doom Over Brixia - Colony (Brescia)

Candlemass + Hooded Menace + Shores of Null + Naga – 25.03.2017 – Doom Over Brixia - Colony (Brescia)

Candlemass + Hooded Menace + Shores of Null + Naga – 03.25.2017 – Doom Over Brixia - Colony (Brescia)

The metalhead is an endangered species, difficult to observe in 2017. The protected areas where it worships its idol (the Distortion) with horns to the sky and wild headbanging are shrinking. Also the Colony (one of these places of reference in recent years) will be forced to reduce its space and the number of big live shows. On the occasion of the return to Italy of a historic band like Candlemass, a moment before Colony - as we know it today - will change its face, a reunion among our fellowmen is absolutely due.

First band on stage is Naga, from Naples. Their sludge/doom is heavy, oppressive and full of bad vibes. Dissonances, gloomy atmosphere and sick voice lurk between a fat riff and a filthy one. Sort of Neapolitan Cough, with a strong post metal element. Great discovery of the evening, for all lovers of the most putrid sounds.

We move away from the stage to reconnect with old metal friends and drink a beer, and then we come back to battle stations for Shores of Null. Precise and compact, they strike the audience with their doom/death outbursts, colouring in black the venue with gothic atmosphere and sophisticated original melodies. Too bad for not perfectly calibrated sounds (voices are too loud in comparison with the guitars), that anyhow do not invalidate the dazzling beauty of songs like Souls of the Abyss or Ruins Alive. We just have to wait for the successor of the beautiful Quiescence.

At first sight, he enormous singer of Hooded Menace and his minuscule singlet clash with this evening dedicated to doom metal. Yet, as soon as the blond Finnish clears his throat producing a catharral growl (flawless for the whole the concert), we understand that the new singer perfectly fits with the band. The heavy distortions of the Finnish band make their music look like a narcoleptic and (extremely) slowed down version of Lovecraftian Morbid Angel death metal. Monolithic and dazing.

The 80s Candlemass doom metal has got a really different dynamism. The Swedish band impresses with its powerful riffs and epic melodies, instigating the audience (thanks to the energy of the new singer Mats Levén) to join those choruses that only a metal concert can offer. Classic songs like Bewitched, Crystal Ball and Solitude are sung loudly by the "metal family" who had gathered at the Colony. A proudly unfashionable family that in front of the sepulchral - yet at the same time majestic - atmospheres of Candlemass music shows to be a united community that deserves that places like Colony would multiply themselves instead of disappearing.
