Blaak Heat - Shifting Mirrors

Blaak Heat - Shifting Mirrors
(Svart Records, Tee Pee Records, 2016)

Blaak Heat - Shifting Mirrors
(Svart Records, Tee Pee Records, 2016)

Erase boundaries, like a sea wave erase signs on the sand. Blaak Heat music is the ocean wave having fun in melting together grains of different colors and backgrounds, building castles one step away from the shore, to deform and melt them away. A wave that comes from the heart of Europe (Paris, city where the band formed) to land in Los Angeles (new homeland of the band from 2012). The musical journey is however much longer and more tortuous than that one geographically connecting the two cities. After a short visit in Germany in the early 70s - to absorb the cosmic vastness and explorer spirit of Agitation Free - and before crossing the Atlantic Ocean - to take part in some peyote-based ancient ritual in the tent of a tribe of Indians of America - the musical wave of Blaak Heat finds its inspirtaion in the heart of the Middle East. At the foot of an Afghan mountain, or on the southern shores of the Black Sea, the trio collects and reworks the melodic and rhythmic core of Shifting Mirrors, before melding it with volcanic heavy psych explosions, dusty as the Californian desert rock. In the boundless Asian deserts the seeds of a new psychedelia are collected and processed. And they are not simply embedded in a Western rock matrix as exotic tourist souvenirs, yet they are harmoniously fused with the roots of the band. In this age of nationalist resurgence and clashes of civilizations and religions, a balanced, smooth and mature blend that shows an implicit political value, as well as a musical one. A lesson to be deeply enjoyed and understood.

Russian Circles + Cloakroom - 03.03.2017 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Russian Circles + Cloakroom - 03.03.2017 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Potenti. Giganteschi. Catartici.

Russian Circles + Cloakroom - 03.03.2017 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

Powerful. Gigantic. Cathartic. If last year in April, the trio from Chicago impressed me for the power shown by their songs in live performances and the way the three musicians stood like giants on the stage of the Electric Ballroom, this time there is a third added value in their concert: a really rare - really cathartic - emotionalism.

Cloakroom to introduce the evening the, with their shoegaze-soaked post rock. Interesting and effective in some tracks and in a few passages characterized by crescendo and distorted openings, the Indiana trio tends to recline a bit too much on the stylistic features of the genre of reference and sometimes it loses the mordant and the capacity of fascination that are instead the strength of the big names of post rock.

Then Russian Circles. And for an hour and a half the listener is captured and monopolized by their rock opera. It is not just their music to be speechless, even the three musicians did not utter a single syllable and they are absolutely focused - and intent - in their music, all in one with their instruments. The wall of sound is impressive and the transition from one piece to another takes place almost seamlessly. The setlist is wide and varied, and songs from their latest album - Guidance - resonate in all their beauty, confirming what for me is a production all on the rise. The rhythm section is substantially perfect, bass and drums work with an enviable synergy, constantly - and skillfully - swaping the role of the band engine. Mike Sullivan guitar is the narrator, who takes on the role of all the protagonists of the story, giving voice to each of them. If they fascinate on recordings, in concerts Russian Circles stun and bewitch. Seeing is believing!

Ozric Tentacles - Erpland

Ozric Tentacles - Erpland
(Dovetail Records, 1990)

Ozric Tentacles - Erpland
(Dovetail Records, 1990)

Light years away from 80s music (even alternative one!), at the beginning of the decade Ozric Tentacles awakened long lysergic jam sessions to color underground English festivals. In independent music world psychedelic sounds were still alive, but - lost freedom, complexity and extemporization - they had become an experiment to enrich post punk and new wave philosophy. Ozric Tentacles homage to hallucinogen sounds of 70s progressive space rock is overflowing and in constant motion instead. After years of self-produced audio cassettes, Erpland  is the definitive maturation of their ironic and funny instrumental music, without any intellectual claim. As a floating bubble Erpland wanders in psych cosmos, meeting Gong craziness, Hawkwind excesses and Tangerine Dream electronic meditations. Perfect tribute to hippie philosophy.

Nick Oliveri solo tour must be a prescription of his psychoanalyst, in my opinion. Play, play, play. Always. Even when his (many) bands are resting. Never accumulate energy  too long. Never stop. The therapy involves a series of acoustic concerts, where maybe Nick could pour out his adrenaline in a more controlled conscious and self-limiting way. The doctor, anyway, has not come to terms with his patient. Indeed, even an acoustic guitar and a tiny club are enough to free his energy in an irrational and exuberant way. So, no one should expect rearranged songs for the occasion, nor a rationally and meticulously studied setlist, nor formally perfect execution. Nor even candles, stool and that intimate atmosphere of MTV Unplugged. Apart from a few Queens of the Stone Age songs (Auto Pilot, Another Love Song) which are better suited to the acoustic reinterpretation - and that sound really exciting, showing Nick most "sensitive" side - the rest is the overwhelming fury of a punk concert played with only a microphone and an acoustic guitar. Nick shouts to the point of swallowing the microphone, with neck veins ready to explode, and having a lot of fun. He does not realize that behind him there is no band and that there is no distortion pedal under his feet. Indeed, he seems at ease in not hiding his energy behind a wall of distortion. His voice - always powerful, dirty and angry - is what sustain the musical side of the show, on the whole certainly not flawless. Because this is a show, more than a concert. A show in which the exchange with the audience is continuous (to the point of inviting someone in the audience to play guitar on Feel Good Hit of the Summer to let him just sing the song) and drinks offered (and returned) are countless. Perhaps the therapeutic purpose of the tour has been reached. This is not due to the self control that an acoustic solo concert could determine (the evening ends with frenzy Nick yelling Six Shooter "a cappella" - his own words), but certainly it is due to a significant deepening of human relations. And fun. Because Nick enjoys himself a lot  and entertains a packed Albatross. How not to love Nick?

Codeine - Frigid Stars LP

Codeine - Frigid Stars LP
(Glitterhouse Records, Sub Pop, 1990)

Estate 1990. A momenti intimo, a momenti epico. Black Emperor.

Codeine - Frigid Stars LP
(Glitterhouse Records, Sub Pop, 1990)

Summer of 1990. In a Brooklyn basement Codeine record their debut album. From that basement a desolate, disillusioned, jaded music comes out.  It takes your breath away as summer sultriness, it isolates and envelops you as autumn fog, it hypnotizes you as the lights of a metropolis watched through a car window running on a wet road. Intimate and hypnotic, it slides slowly into the void of a loneliness without alternatives. A noise rock with delicate dissonant arpeggios, rhythmic strokes in slow motion and enveloping glimpses of distortion. Nihilistic and tired, Frigid Stars is an abyss towards which the listener is fatally drawn to. Sometimes it sounds intimate, sometimes epic. Never too emphatic. Existential and cathartic, in its simplicity Frigid Stars is original and unique  as certain albums by Neil Young and Nick Drake. And also a source of inspiration for all post rock and slowcore bands - from Low to Mogwai, from Bark Psychosis to Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Mare + Employed To Serve + Hyperwülff - 11.02.2017 - Freakout Club (Bologna)

Mare + Employed To Serve + Hyperwülff - 11.02.2017 - Freakout Club (Bologna)

Sludge metal diretto e compatto con la rotondità dello stoner e qualche accenno space rock (esplicitato dalla cover di Set the Control for the Heart of the Sun).

Mare + Employed To Serve + Hyperwülff - 02.11.2017 - Freakout Club (Bologna)

During my period of addiction to new music (mid 00s), characterized by wild uncontrolled and compulsive mp3 download, I came across the debut EP of a Canadian band with an Italian name: Mare. Their post metal transcended the one in vogue at the time, venturing into territories on the borders of jazz, and that EP (the only release before the band split) is still today considered a rare - and extraordinarily - beautiful pearl in the field of heavy and experimental music. After so many years the band reformed itself (the trio became a duo, to be exact) and  I do not want to miss the chance to attend the concert of a cult band like this.

First on Freakout stage are Hyperwülff. The duo from Bologna confirm to be a war machine, releasing a burst of heavy, yet at the same time dynamic, riffs. Direct and compact sludge metal with the plumpness of stoner and some space rock hints (made explicit by the cover of Set the Control for the Heart of the Sun). Once again really great!

The young English band Employed to Serve is a real cataclysm. Their post hardcore is crazy and uncontrollable (as their guitarist coming down into the audience thrashing about like a madman). Complex yet always fluid, their songs combine hardcore fury with death metal violence, through modern - sometimes at breakneck speed, sometimes cadenced (Botch school) - riffs and Meshuggah-style dissonances. The growl of the singer is effective being at the same time powerful, dirty and absolutely natural. Great discovery!

Even though they are only two on stage, Mare are able to create an incredible universe of sounds. A complex, layered, constantly moving and perpetually variable music which offers a few handles to hold on, but inside which it is beautiful to get lost. Walls of distortion and ultra-deep growl occur alongside very fluffy jazzy phrasings, guided by a clear, incredibly bright (though not always perfect) voice. We are close to Kayo Dot, yet - unlike Toby Driver band - Mare play cohesive, fluid and engaging, even live. Music beyond the boundaries of genre, difficult to categorize, fascinating precisely because it touches the emotional chords of the listener, rather than rational ones.

The only "flaw" of the eveningt: no trace of the mythical EP at the band stand. We just have to wait for a reprint and - hopefully! - for the realease of a new album!

Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff plus Early Singles

Mudhoney - Superfuzz Bigmuff plus Early Singles
(Sub Pop, 1990)

Suoni super-fuzzosi, esplosioni noise, accelerazioni punk e rallentamenti stoner: nessun altro come i Mudhoney negli anni '80 sarebbe riuscito a descrivere cosa stava nascendo a Seattle.

(Sub Pop, 1990)

The spontaneity of its underground years is what success mainly tooks away from Seattle music. This compilation of Mudhoney early singles and EPs is probably the best evidence of that phase. Abandoned Green River, Mark Arm creates a new sound that combines Stooges sweaty garage rock with Sonic Youth noise rock. One of the first revitalizations of the music of the past, towards innovations and philosophy of independent rock, key to success of grunge rock. Since the cover photo, this compilation expresses the energy of an expanding musical scene, yet still confined in small clubs. Hyperfuzzed sounds, noise explosions, punk accelerations and stoned slowdowns: nobody could describe what it was being born in Seattle as Mudhoney did in the 80s. And nobody will be able to repeat it with the same irony and spontaneity.
