Forgotten Tomb + Mortuary Drape + Necrosy + Darkend – 17.10.2015 – Colony (Brescia)

Forgotten Tomb + Mortuary Drape + Necrosy + Darkend – 17.10.2015 – Colony (Brescia)

Infine i Forgotten Tomb.

Forgotten Tomb + Mortuary Drape + Necrosy + Darkend – 10.17.2015 – Colony (Brescia)

Forgotten Tomb are headliner at the Oblivion Fest: a festival entirely dedicated to those Italian bands involved in the “dark side” of underground music and which started in the mid afternoon.

I arrive for the evening set, and the first band I find on stage are Darkend: plenty of skulls, candles, a tiny altar with all the paraphernalia for a black mass and a hooded front-man with a goat skull stick in his hand. It is clear that the Emilian band invests a lot – really a lot! – on the scenic and theatrical aspect of their performance. It is a shame though that such an accurate and sophisticated staging does not go together with the evil and rotten music one would expect. In fact, Darkend play a classic metal (sort of mix of black and death influences) enriched by numerous samplers and they are all centered on the figure of the singer, lacking incisiveness and quality – especially in the rhythm section. Not significant performance: more ideas and better live capability are really needed.

Then Necrosy, band from Veneto, which proposes a well-played death metal and presents the songs from their debut full-lenght (out at the beginning of this year). Songs have their core in well structured riffs, among which more melodic parts are interwoven. The singing is effective and the band does its best to involve the public in their show. The impression is that of a combo with great technical skills and a very good live impact: at the moment what is lacking is just a personal spark allowing them to make the real qualitative breakthrough…yet the premises are already there.

Then is the turn of Mortuary Drape. And so it is time again of great coreographies: all the purple and gold draperies proper of their name, all the musicians hooded in worn cloaks, a stunning profusion of incense. If the atmosphere evoken by their music is certainly not that dark and esoteric as their look would suggest, yet the impact is undeniable and the show flows with enthusiasm riff by riff. Flawless from the technical point of view, their classic thrash and heavy metal sound is reminiscent of some 80s bands – Mercyful Fate and Venom above all the others – and this makes their concert entertaining and compelling. Almost thirty years of career…without feeling them!

Finally Forgotten Tomb. The opening – a catchy, melodically effective, gothic metal – surely upsets all the ones who think of them as a cult suicidal/depressive black metal band. During these years the band has changed its skin several times, yet always maintaining that sort of originary, distinguishing, depravation – well expressed even tonight through a massive use of dissonant arpeggios and the foggy, hushed, guitar distorsion. Their modern metal (debtor both to black metal and melodic death metal, but debtor especially to the doom and alternative gothic metal of Katatonia) is not so much self-destructive as it was at the beginning, yet it still sounds powerful, enthrolling, angry, exasperated and annihilating. All these feelings – both through songs of the latest album Hurt yourself and the ones you love and those of the past ones (as the amazing Negative Megalomania) – come to life on stage and from the stage get off on the audience. One hour of intense music flies away in a moment. The final – a medley of songs from the first albums – is the perfect conclusion of a concert which is the synthesis of the many dark souls of the band.

Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium

Cathedral – Forest of Equilibrium
(Earache, 1991)

Lee Dorrian ama i limiti estremi.

Cathedral – Forest of Equilibrium
(Earache, 1991)

Lee Dorrian loves extreme borders. In the middle of the 80s he contributes to create a brutal and crazy sound, through ultra-short and ultra-fast Napalm Death music. Then, he creates a sepulchral sound, through ultra-long and ultra-slow Cathedral music. Once again the result is an authentic revolution. Forest of Equilibrium is so dilated that transcends his influences sounding hallucinogenic and stoned. Beyond the abundance of darkness and sense of oppression, classical in doom metal of the 80s, there are no epic melodies or hard rock riffs, but a psychedelic fog that reminds 70s drug passion, without being similar to Black Sabbath sound. Cathedral show the grotesque dimension of doom, that will be explicit in the following albums - while here it is still subtle. A strange cemeterial bad trip, as the cover artwork shows.

It is difficult to express in a few words impressions and feelings aroused by the Einstürzende Neubauten concert…they are so many and so variegated! This happens also because Lament – the concept album performed in its entirety of non-disassemblable opus – can not be described by a single adjective as much as the performing of some excerpts makes impossible to appreciate its value and meaning.
Magnificent. Its manifold and multiform instrumentation, its 5 members, the classic quintet supporting and enriching the show, the rodies (fundamentals!) running back and forth from the centre to the sides of the stage bringing-moving-assembling-dismanteling all the different pieces at the right moment.
Ambitious. The central theme of this concept – the First World War – tackled and discussed through reconstructions, suggestions and recordings, densely woven together in a complex pattern that perfectly mirrors that conflict.
Masterly. Sounds, lights, composition, perfect balance of contrasts, seamless theatrical narration that makes the 75 minutes of the opus literally fly away.
Emotional. First of all, the music itself. Then Blixa Bargeld voice. And climaxes of some parts of the composition. The subject of the concept album. The continuous evoked impressions and suggestions.
I bought my ticket just a week before this event: if i had not attended this Einstürzende Neubauten concert, I would have missed such an intense and rare musical – artistic! – performance that I would have regretted forever.

Torche - Restarter

Torche – Restarter
(Relapse Records, 2015)

 Torche – Restarter
(Relapse Records, 2015)

Restarter - as the title may suggest - is the second youth of Torche.
The wall of sound that strikes the incredulous listener gobbles all pop melodies of the past, which survive only in some languid glows of the colossal fourth album of the band from Miami.
Torche push “beyond” stoner rock standards, developing an extremely heavy sound, yet mellow at the same time: perfect to enhance and enrich the solid, tough riffs of the ten songs. This second life of the band is pure energy: it has got a heaviness that lands a step away from post metal and industriali (the powerful Undone) and an acid aftertaste worthy of the best albums of the grunge era (No Servants is Soundgarden at their apex). Anyway, they do not lose melody and groove, perfectly inserted in the devastating avalanche of distorted basses which makes Restarter one of the best heavy albums of the last years.

Lucifer - Lucifer I

Lucifer – Lucifer I
(Rise Above, 2015)

Lucifer – Lucifer I
(Rise Above, 2015)

In such a fertile time for occult sounds of sabbathian memory, Lucifer debut stands out not only for the celebrity of the musicans involved in this project, but also – and primarily – for the high quality of the music: a mighty doom metal steeped in oblique melodies of Middle Eastern taste, reminiscent of the ancient Egypt. In spite of the antique and arcane sensations evoked by Lucifer music, this is assembled remotely thanks to modern technology (mastodontic riffs of Gaz Jenning – backbone of defunct Cathedral – meet mysterious voice of Joanna Sadonis – singer of defunct new promises The Oath – only after crossing via internet the distance between England and Germany). The result is coherent, powerful, bewitching and never artificial. In the wake of occult 70s hard rock big bands, Lucifer pick from the repertoire of magic, arcane imagery, with hints of NWOBHM, but also with the irony of the horror B movie fan (“…don’t be afraid, you’ll live until you die…”). An enthralling album that keeps together the mastery of the veterans and the creativity of the new promises, confirming the moment of grace of occult hard rock.

Taake + Krakow + Orkan + Kaiserreich – 3.10.2015 – Colony (Brescia)

 Taake + Krakow + Orkan + Kaiserreich – 3.10.2015 – Colony (Brescia)

Taake + Krakow + Orkan + Kaisereich – 10.03.2015 – Colony (Brescia)

Black Metal has always attracted attention more for its characters than for its music. Orjan Stedjeberg (aka Hoest) – leader of the Norwegian band Taake – is famous for his provocations (one of his show in Germany was suspended because of him getting on stage with a swastika painted on his breast), but tonight – thanks to an amazing concert - he has been able to demonstrate that black metal has got substance in itself.

Kaisereich opens this evening. They play a traditional black metal, yet they play it very well and this creates an adequate atmosphere while waiting for the headliner. The band from Brescia tries to recreate the chill of Norwegian fjords through classical rhythmic blast beats which sustain freezing guitars and desperate screams. A definite personality is still to be built, anyway good ideas are already there.

Then it is the turn of Orkan. Band from Bergen, they look more like a thrash metal combo than to a sect of demonic blacksters. And their concert is exactly a perfect combination of the two musical genres, with outbursts at full speed – reminiscent of certain Enslaved songs thanks to the use of dissonant chords – combined with funny, fast thrash metal riffs. Orkan are powerful as old school thrash, yet they do it with their own personality (there are even some punk and stoner inserts!) proving to be a really interesting discover, worth to deepen.

Krakow (also them from Bregen) open their show with a long piece that combines together melancholic post rock arpeggios with doomy walls of sound. Musically not in line with the rest of the bands, nevertheless they are capable to keep the attention of the audience thanks to muddy mastodontic riffs interrupted by thunderous explosions. During quieter moments, Krakow tries to create the psychedelic, melancholic atmosphere typical of post metal, but they lose strenght and effectiveness leaving to many empty spaces and falling in a sort of honeyed mood because of the too thin, faint clean vocals of the guitarist – and this is a real pity, especially thinking of the great harsh vocals of the bassist.

Taake appear on the foggy stage as Viking warriors and they frontally attack the audience with a strenght which is usually unfamiliar to a musical genre more interested in wickedness than in power. Yet the Norwegian band is really mighty, and Hoest is a proper frontman, able to excite all the presents (already well excited, moshing in front of the stage). Filthy and rotten, a threadbare leather jacket opened on his nacked breast  showing a tattoed inverted cross, psychotic eyes, a sludgy long beard and a bottle of wine constantly in his hand, the singer with his harsh and dusty voice is the perfect representation of degeneration. And so it is Taake music: dirty, incorrect and provocative as black metal in its origin (let’s think about Venom!), powerful as the most uncompromising thrash metal, and at times even flirting with stoner groove. In the end the overflowing energy of the band shows a usually unknown side of true norwegian black metal, without ever abandoning the classical dictates of the genre or yielding to compromises (except, maybe, for a really interesting combination of pure violence and…a banjo!). It sounds strange thinking of a black metal gig as something more entertaining than scary…well, Taake managed to get this result!

Ufomammut - Ecate

Ufomammut – Ecate
(Neurot Recordings, 2015)

Ufomammut – Ecate
(Neurot Recordings, 2015)

Sometimes synthesis may seem a defect in a genre usually characterized by dilations which try to go beyond human perception of time like cosmic doom is. Yet, thanks to synthesis, Ufomammut – with their 7th full lenght – conceive one of their most relevant, significant, albums. Focused on heavy monolithic riffs – nearer to the stunning, yet dynamic, Melvins’ fragmentations as ever before – the band from Tortona creats a series of boulders in which Vita’ s drumming is absolutely protagonist (and looking at sounds, here they are even heavier than before, though less suffocating and alienating). The irregular groove and variety of the six tracks sustains the psychedelic effect of otherworldly reverbs and space synth, amplifying the result and making this album the third vertex of the triangular career of the italian trio: if Snailking is the mazy in-wrapping of ponderous magma towards psychedlic shores and Lucifer Songs is the ultimate ambient trip, Ecate is the meteor shower missing in their history up to now.
