Elav Stoner Open Air Festival 2018 - Day 3

[Belzebong + Papir + Weedpecker + Dead Man's Blues Fuckers + The Black Lodge]

Seconda edizione dell'Elav Stoner Open Air Festival, e anche a questo giro riesco ad esserci, anche se solo per la giornata di sabato. Ed è un vero peccato! Perché se già la prima edizione era stata un gran bell'esordio, questa seconda annata ha superato la precedente. Una giornata in più ed un bill ancora più ricco e interessante, in un periodo dell'anno dal meteo decisamente più mite. Con alcuni importanti punti fermi: l'ingresso gratuito e l'ottima birra dell'ELAV! 

Ma parliamo delle bands. I primi di questa calda giornata settembrina sono i The Black Lodge. Con una forte impronta stoner doom ed una discendenza diretta da band come Down e Corrosion of Conformity, la band veneta ha un gran bel tiro e l'impatto di un combo di ben più lungo corso. Spicca la voce di Gillo Perotta: non solo per la sua potenza, ma anche per la sua versatilità e tecnica. Il primo album è in uscita entro la fine di questo 2018 e direi che vale la pena di segnarselo in agenda.

E' poi il turno di un duo travolgente più di un'intera orchestra blues. Solo chitarra&voce e batteria per i Dead Man's Blues Fuckers, ma direi che non si sente assolutamente il bisogno di altro. Southern rock e heavy blues a manetta. Qualche siparietto che tradisce il passato da one man band di Diego DeadMan Potron, ma a farla da padrone è la polvere del deserto entrata dentro il buio saloon, fra birra e whiskey, pistole e puttane. Dritto per dritto, con pochi fronzoli.

I Weedpecker sono la band che in assoluto volevo sentire quest'oggi. Appena uscito il loro terzo album (III, appunto) a gennaio scorso sono rimasta catturata da questo quartetto polacco. E appena l'Elav Stoner Open Air ne ha annunciato la presenza il cartellone, ho segnato la data in rosso sull'agenda. Così tanta aspettativa può essere molto rischiosa. Io il rischio l'ho corso e ho fatto bene, perché dal vivo i Weedpecker sono ancora più trascinanti, emozionanti e psichedelici che su disco. Se ogni loro riff o nota di chitarra e basso dà vita a spazi sonori in cui perdersi lasciando dilatare lo spazio ed il tempo, le loro voci ed i loro intrecci (sempre perfetti) sono come le sirene di Ulisse che ti catturano, stordiscono e rapiscono verso il loro mondo al di là dello specchio. Cercateli in giro ed andateli a sentire dal vivo e abbandonatevi a questo trip musicale!

Altra band per la prima volta dal vivo in Italia e sotto Stickman Records, i Papir non hanno bisogno di voci per farci fluttuare sospesi nelle vaste architetture e negli ampi paesaggi costruiti dalle loro chitarra, basso e batteria. Essenziali come può esserlo un power trio, ma complessi come solo certo krautrock psichedelico può riuscire ad essere. Sembra una lunga jam, dall'inizio definito e dall'esito ignoto ed imprevedibile, ma che va sempre a segno. Anche loro una gran bella scoperta live!

Finale col botto e con la "botta". Polacchi come i Weedpecker e sempre con uno spiccato gusto per l'infiorescenza della canapa, i Belzebong sono decisamente più pesanti, doom e marci dei loro connazionali. Non c'è spazio per le parole: i loro riff sabbathiani e sulfurei parlano da soli. Immersi in dense nuvole di fumo, le onde dei loro capelli si muovono fuori-sincrono aumentando lo stordimento naturalmente prodotto dalle loro canzoni. "Follow the smoke toward the riff filled land" sembra davvero il perfetto motto per la loro musica, che dal vivo è ancora più possente, fangosa e inesorabilmente travolgente che su disco.

Con il lato oscuro e più pesante dello stoner si conclude questa giornata e questa seconda edizione dell'Elav Stoner Open Air. L'appuntamento è sicuramente per l'anno prossimo, con la speranza che questa formula vincente resti inalterata e possa al limite soltanto migliorarsi, come quella delle ricette del birrificio che ospita e dà il nome a questo fantastico festival.

Second edition for Elav Stoner Open Air Festival, and also this year I manage to be there, though only for Saturday. And it's a real pity! Because if the first edition had already been a great debut, this second one has outdone the previous one. An extra day and an even richer and more interesting bill, in a period of the year with a decidedly milder weather. With some important milestones: free entry and the excellent ELAV beer!

But let's talk about the bands. On this hot September day The Black Lodge are the first on stage. With a strong stoner doom influence and a direct ancestry from bands like Down and Corrosion of Conformity, the Venetian band has got a great groove and the impact of a more long-standing combo. Gillo Perotta's voice stands out: not only for its power, but also for its versatility and technique. Their first album is coming out by the end of this 2018 and I would say it is worth noting it on the agenda.

It is then the turn of a duo which is much more overwhelming than an entire blues orchestra. Only guitar & voice and drums for Dead Man's Blues Fuckers, but I would say that there is absolutely no need for anything else. Southern rock and heavy blues at full throttle. Some gags betraying Diego DeadMan Potron's past as one man band, but to boss around is the desert dust which entered the dark saloon, among beer and whiskey, guns and whores. Straight for straight, with no frills.

Weedpecker are the band that more than anything else I wanted to hear today. Last January, just released their third album (III, indeed), I was captured by this Polish quartet. And as soon as Elav Stoner Open Air announced their name in the billboard, I marked the date in red on my agenda. So much expectation can be very risky. I took the risk and I was right, because live Weedpecker are even more enthralling, exciting and psychedelic than on record. If each of their riffs or guitar and bass notes gives life to sonic spaces in which to get lost, leaving dilate space and time, their voices and their intertwining (always perfect) are like sirens for Ulysses, capturing, stunning and kidnapping you towards their world beyond the mirror. Look for them around, go and listen to them live and surrender yourself to this musical trip! 

Another band for the first time live in Italy and in Stickman Records roster, Papir do not need voices to let us floating suspended in the vast architectures and in the wide landscapes built by their guitar, bass and drums. Essential as a power trio can be, but complex as only certain psychedelic krautrock can succeed to be. It seems like a long jam, with a defined beginning and an unknown unpredictable outcome, but that always hits the nail on the head. They, too, a great live discovery!

"High" final with a bang. Poles like Weedpecker and with a marked taste for the inflorescence of the hemp, Belzebong are decidedly heavier, more doom and more rotten of their countrymen. There is no space for words: their Sabbath and sulphurous riffs speak for themselves. Immersed in thick clouds of smoke, the waves of their hair move out-synchronously increasing the stunning naturally produced by their songs. "Follow the smoke toward the riff filled land" looks like the perfect motto for their music, which is even more powerful, muddy and inexorably overwhelming than on record.

With the darker and heavier side of stoner this day ends together with this second edition of Elav Stoner Open Air. The appointment is definitely for next year, with the hope that this winning formula remains unchanged and, if anything, that it can only better itself, like that of the recipes of the brewery hosting and giving its name to this fantastic festival.
