House of Broken Promises + Monolith - 03.10.2017 - Ganz Of Bicchio (Viareggio, LU)

I concerti infrasettimanali sono sempre ostici da raggiungere per me che vivo ai margini dei centri della cultura  musicale e della musica dal vivo. Ma per fortuna esistono piccole realtà che vanno contro la tendenza qui imperante, e che mi svoltano la settimana, dandomi l'illusione di essere a Milano, Bologna o Roma.

Questo martedì sera al Ganz Of Bicchio aprono i modenesi Monolith. La potente voce del cantante è la prima cosa che colpisce e cattura l'ascoltatore. Ed è sicuramente un elemento distintivo, nonché un punto di forza della band. Cresciuto a pane, Soundgarden e Chris Cornell, Andrea Marzoli con la sua voce e le sue linee vocali fa risaltare tutta l'attitudine di matrice grunge di una band che si muove non solo a partire da queste radici, ma anche attraverso lo stoner rock e l'hard rock di matrice anni '90. Suoni potenti e riff efficaci per un gran inizio di serata.

E poi House of Broken Promises e ci troviamo di fronte a tre mostri da palcoscenico. Massicci, sfrenati, duri e puri, mischiano abilmente del polveroso e sudato stoner anni '90, con la sfrenatezza di certo hard rock da biker in puro stile anni '80. Nato dalle ceneri degli Unida (Mike Cancino alla batteria e Arthur Seay alla chitarra), questo power trio vibra di tutta la carica dei suoni nati nel cuore desertico della California, resi ancora più accesi dal rombo di una moto lanciata a tutta velocità verso l'ennesimo boccale di birra e la prossima spogliarellista. I tre non risparmiamo né un riff né una goccia di sudore. Si divertono come matti (incredibili le continue smorfie di Arthur Seay, nonché il fantastico siparietto-duetto chitarra/batteria - a suon di frammenti di grandi classici rock - in attesa del ritorno del bassista Joe Mora, finito chissà dove!) e fanno divertire come matti i presenti. E in tutto questo suonano terribilmente bene. Volete qualcosa di più?

Midweek concerts are always hard to reach for me living far from the centers of live music. Fortunately there are small venues that go against the prevailing trend, and they enlighten my week, giving me the illusion of being in Milan, Bologna or Rome.

Monolith, from Modena, open this Tuesday evening at Ganz Of Bicchio. The powerful voice of the singer is the first thing that strikes and captures the listener. And it is definitely a distinctive element as well as a strong point of the band. Grown up with Soundgarden and Chris Cornell, Andrea Marzoli with his voice and vocal lines emphasizes all the grunge attitude of a band that moves not only from these roots, but also through stoner rock and 90s hard rock. Powerful sounds and effective riffs for a great start of the evening.

And then House of Broken Promises and we are faced with three monsters of the stage. Massive, unbridled, hard and pure, they  skillfully blend the dusty sweaty stoner of the 90s, with the bravado of certain bikers-hard-rock in pure 80s style. Born from the ashes of Unida (Mike Cancino on drums and Arthur Seay on guitar), this power trio vibrates with all the amazing energy of the sounds born in the desert heart of California, making even more burning thanks to the roar of a motorcycle launched at full speed to the next beer and the next stripper. The three do not spare either a riff or a drop of sweat. They have fun like crazy (incredible Arthur Seay's constant grimace, as well as the fantastic sketch-duet guitar/drum - playing fragments of great rock classics - waiting for bassist Joe Mora return, gone who knows where!) and they let all the audience have fun. And all of while they play terribly well. Do you want something more?
