The Necromancers – Of Blood and Wine

Negli ultimi anni è nata l’Università degli Studi Occulti. Una scuola di magia (nera) simile a quella in cui studia Harry Potter, ma la cui cattedra è affidata a gente come Ozzy, High Tide, Comus, Coven, oltre ad una numerosa compagine di registi di horror di serie B degli anni '70, e ad innumerevoli musicisti heavy metal. I francesi The Necromancers si laureano nel 2017 con il loro disco d’esordio (Servants of the Salem Girl) e conseguono la specializzazione con Of Blood and Wine (2018). I corsi sull’occult rock degli anni '70, così come quelli sul doom metal e sulla NWOBHM, sono stati seguiti con attenzione. E così pure le lezioni tenute dal conterraneo Jean Rollin, regista che (sempre negli anni 70) mescolava horror nebbioso, erotismo e visioni lisergiche. Vista l’abbondanza di laureati degli ultimi anni, non sarà facile trovare lavoro. Ma questi francesi dimostrano di essere in grado di rielaborare quanto appreso con personalità, componendo melodie originali e coinvolgenti, con occhio sempre attento all’atmosfera. E, cosa non frequente per chi esce da questo ateneo, possiedono un cantante con una voce calda e profonda. Alternando lunghi brani di hard rock progressivo (magistralmente scorrevoli e sempre carichi di groove) e ballate offuscate da uno strato di bruma autunnale, dimostrano di avere tutte le carte in regola per ricoprire un ruolo importante nella società medievale presagita da questo ateneo.

The Necromancers – Of Blood and Wine

In recent years the University of Occult Studies was born. A school of (black) magic similar to the one in which Harry Potter studies, but whose chair is entrusted to people like Ozzy, High Tide, Comus, Coven, as well as to a large group of directors of 70s horror B-movies, and to countless heavy metal musicians. French The Necromancers graduated in 2017 with their debut album (Servants of the Salem Girl) and took a specialization with Of Blood and Wine (2018). Courses on 70s occult rock, as well as those on doom metal and NWOBHM, have been carefully followed. And so were the lectures given by their fellow countryman Jean Rollin, a director who (still in the 70s) mixed foggy horror, eroticism and lysergic visions. Given the plenty of graduates in recent years, it will not be easy to find work. But these French guys prove to be able to rework what they have learned with personality, composing original and engaging melodies, always keeping an eye on the atmosphere. And, not common for those one graduating at this college, they have a singer with a warm deep voice. Alternating long tracks of progressive hard rock (masterfully flowing and always full of groove) and ballads tarnished by a layer of autumn mist, they prove to have all the credentials to play an important role in the medieval society portrayed by this university.
