Listening to one of Nick Cave albums is listening to the story of his life, his most intimate confessions, his deepest dreams. For Cave, composing means coming to terms (or colliding up to get hurt) with himselves and with his own metamorphosis. Even when Cave does not make explicit in his songs the parallel with his personal condition, it is always evident how much it influences the creative process. In the late 80s, after a period spent in the black hole of drug addiction, Cave approaches religion, leaves London and Berlin and takes refuge in Brazil to compose and record. The South American Sun, the love for a woman and a deep immersion in the faith. These melt the tensions, anger and nervousness of the previous albums, liquefying the noisy clashes in deep and mature compositions in which strings and piano give a new sensitivity to the dark music of the Australian singer-songwriter. The hope and the energy that Cave breathes in contact with Brazilians (people forced to live with inhuman poverty and intolerable social conflicts) has a cathartic power that will lead him to give a warm light to his dark ballads. Through some of the most intense passages of the songwriter's discography, The Good Son tells his redemption with profound humanity, mixing light and shadow in a new and unprecedented nuance.
