L’Ira del Baccano – Terra 42

Che l’Italia sia stata una delle terre madri del rock progressivo è cosa nota. Un periodo luminoso che pare perso nelle profondità del passato, per l’ascoltatore odierno. Eppure l’eredità di quell’epoca si respira, in alcuni casi, ancora oggi. Il primo disco in studio de L’Ira del Baccano ne è un perfetto esempio. Tre lunghe suite tipicamente progressive, che si avvolgono in contorsioni strumentali (mai pedanti o autocompiaciute) nate da libere jam session e poi modellate con abilità melodica e perizia tecnica. Ma Terra 42 va al di là del passato illustre del rock italiano, e anziché appoggiarsi sulle atmosfere romantiche, melodiche e sinfoniche di gran parte del prog italiano, si avventura nello space rock e nella psichedelia pesante, viaggiando a cavallo tra Hawkwind e Baroness, Ozric Tentacles e Monster Magnet, Grateful Dead e Soundgarden. Un viaggio avanti e indietro nel tempo compiuto con personalità e creatività, che porta a compimento 6 anni di concerti e visionarie jam session (in precedenza immortalate nel live Si non Sedes is Live MMVII). Non possiamo sapere se Terra 42 diventerà l’alba di una nuova ondata progressiva italiana, ma è evidente che l’esplorazione ai confini della galassia musicale compiuta dalla band romana ha le carte in regola per risvegliare un passato da troppo tempo dormiente.

It is well known that Italy has been one of the homelands and birthlands for progressive rock. A brilliant era which seems lost in the depths of the past for nowadays listeners. Nevertheless the inheritance of that time is still alive in some cases. First L’Ira del Baccano studio album is a perfect, clear example of this inheritance. Three long typically progressive suites, wrapping in instrumental contortions (never pedantic, pompous or self-satisfied) which were born from free jam sessions then modeled through melodic and technical skills. Yet Terra 42 goes beyond the illustrious past of Italian rock. It does not rest on romantic and symphonic atmospheres typical of most of Italian prog: instead it ventures in space rock and heavy psychedelia, traveling halfway between Hawkwind and Baroness, Ozric Tentacles and Monster Magnet, Greatful Dead and Soundgarden. A journey back and forth in time, accomplished with personality and creativity, which is the completion of 6 years of concerts and visionary jams (formerly immortalized in live album Si non Sedes is Live MMVII). It can not be said if Terra 42 is destined to become the dawn of a new Italian progressive wave, nonetheless it is clear that the explorations on the borders of the musical galaxy performed by the band from Roma have what it takes to awaken a too long dormant past.
