I Forgotten Tomb sono gli headliner dell’Oblivion Fest: un festival tutto dedicato a gruppi italiani che bazzicano il “lato oscuro” dell'underground e che vede salire sul palco le prime band già a metà pomeriggio.

Arrivo per la fase serale dell’evento, e mi ritrovo di fronte ai Darkend: palco riccamente addobbato di teschi, candele e ceri, piccolo altare “da messa nera” e front-man incappucciato con tanto di bastone con teschio caprino. La band emiliana punta tanto – tantissimo – sull’aspetto scenografico e teatrale della propria performance. Peccato però che da contraltare a tanta messa in scena (sicuramente affascinante e ben realizzata) non vi sia una musica così cattiva e marcia come ci si aspetterebbe. I Darkend si attestano su un metal piuttosto classico (un mix di influenze black e death) arricchito di numerosi sampler, e ruotano tutti intorno alla figura del loro cantante, mancando però di incisività e spessore - soprattutto sulla sessione ritmica. Performance non significativa: si sente il bisogno di più idee e di una migliore resa live.

Seguono i Necrosy, band veneta che propone un death metal ben suonato e che presenta i brani del full-lenght di debutto uscito ad inizio anno. Le canzoni si incentrano su riff ben strutturati, su cui vengono intessute alcune parti più melodiche. Il cantato è convincente e la band fa di tutto per coinvolgere il pubblico. L’impressione è quella di una band con un’ottima preparazione tecnica e con un ottimo impatto: al momento manca solo quella scintilla personale che permetta loro di fare il vero salto di qualità…le premesse però ci sono tutte.

E’ poi la volta dei Mortuary Drape. Si torna alle grandi coreografie, con tutti i paramenti viola e oro che convengono al loro nome, tutti i membri incappucciati in logori mantelli, ed una profusione di incenso che stordisce. Se l'atmosfera evocata dalla loro musica non è certo oscura come il loro look lascerebbe intendere, l'impatto è innegabile, ed il concerto scorre piacevolmente un riff dopo l’altro. Impeccabili dal punto di vista tecnico, le loro sonorità classicamente thrash ed heavy metal richiamano alcuni nomi degli anni ’80 – Mercyful Fate e Venom su tutti – e rendono la loro performance divertente e convincente. Quasi trent’anni di carriera e non sentirli!

Infine i Forgotten Tomb. L'attacco, affidato ad un metal gotico catchy e melodicamente efficace, spiazza tutti coloro che se li ricordano come una band di culto in ambito suicidal/depressive black metal. In questi anni la band ha cambiato più volte pelle, mantenendo però la depravazione che l'ha contraddistinta fin dalle origini, dimostrata questa sera con un notevole uso di arpeggi dissonanti e da una nebbiosa e ovattata distorsione di chitarra. Il loro metal moderno (debitore tanto del Black quanto del Death metal melodico, ma soprattutto del doom e del metal alternativo gotico dei Katatonia) non ha più tendenze autodistruttive come agli esordi, ma suona potente, travolgente, incazzato, esasperato e annichilente. Tutte queste sensazioni, a partire dai pezzi del nuovo album Hurt yourself and the ones you love fino a quelli del passato – come la stupenda Negative Megalomania, prendono vita sul palco e da lì si riversano sul pubblico. Un’ora di concerto volata via in un baleno. Il finale, con un medley delle canzoni dei primi album, è la perfetta conclusione di un concerto che è sintesi delle diverse anime oscure che animano la band.

Forgotten Tomb + Mortuary Drape + Necrosy + Darkend – 10.17.2015 – Colony (Brescia)

Forgotten Tomb are headliner at the Oblivion Fest: a festival entirely dedicated to those Italian bands involved in the “dark side” of underground music and which started in the mid afternoon.

I arrive for the evening set, and the first band I find on stage are Darkend: plenty of skulls, candles, a tiny altar with all the paraphernalia for a black mass and a hooded front-man with a goat skull stick in his hand. It is clear that the Emilian band invests a lot – really a lot! – on the scenic and theatrical aspect of their performance. It is a shame though that such an accurate and sophisticated staging does not go together with the evil and rotten music one would expect. In fact, Darkend play a classic metal (sort of mix of black and death influences) enriched by numerous samplers and they are all centered on the figure of the singer, lacking incisiveness and quality – especially in the rhythm section. Not significant performance: more ideas and better live capability are really needed.

Then Necrosy, band from Veneto, which proposes a well-played death metal and presents the songs from their debut full-lenght (out at the beginning of this year). Songs have their core in well structured riffs, among which more melodic parts are interwoven. The singing is effective and the band does its best to involve the public in their show. The impression is that of a combo with great technical skills and a very good live impact: at the moment what is lacking is just a personal spark allowing them to make the real qualitative breakthrough…yet the premises are already there.

Then is the turn of Mortuary Drape. And so it is time again of great coreographies: all the purple and gold draperies proper of their name, all the musicians hooded in worn cloaks, a stunning profusion of incense. If the atmosphere evoken by their music is certainly not that dark and esoteric as their look would suggest, yet the impact is undeniable and the show flows with enthusiasm riff by riff. Flawless from the technical point of view, their classic thrash and heavy metal sound is reminiscent of some 80s bands – Mercyful Fate and Venom above all the others – and this makes their concert entertaining and compelling. Almost thirty years of career…without feeling them!

Finally Forgotten Tomb. The opening – a catchy, melodically effective, gothic metal – surely upsets all the ones who think of them as a cult suicidal/depressive black metal band. During these years the band has changed its skin several times, yet always maintaining that sort of originary, distinguishing, depravation – well expressed even tonight through a massive use of dissonant arpeggios and the foggy, hushed, guitar distorsion. Their modern metal (debtor both to black metal and melodic death metal, but debtor especially to the doom and alternative gothic metal of Katatonia) is not so much self-destructive as it was at the beginning, yet it still sounds powerful, enthrolling, angry, exasperated and annihilating. All these feelings – both through songs of the latest album Hurt yourself and the ones you love and those of the past ones (as the amazing Negative Megalomania) – come to life on stage and from the stage get off on the audience. One hour of intense music flies away in a moment. The final – a medley of songs from the first albums – is the perfect conclusion of a concert which is the synthesis of the many dark souls of the band.
