Nel sottobosco metal degli ultimi anni scarseggiano i vampiri. La fauna che oggi abita le foreste nere è caratterizzata da nani barbuti, grezzi e sporchi, spaventati dall'idea di prendersi troppo sul serio. Oppure da vecchie mummie fin troppo seriose - ultimi, incartapecoriti, mostri sacri del genere. Quando dalla bara sorgono band come i Tribulation - capaci di una musica suadente e affascinante - è impossibile non rimanere ipnotizzati dal richiamo delle tenebre. La musica di questi figli della notte possiede tutta la bellezza spettrale e l'energia dell'eterna gioventù (se nutrita con un'adeguata quantità di sangue) e, al tempo stesso, la sofisticata maturità di chi ha vissuto un numero infinito di notti. Con il loro quarto album gli svedesi dipingono una meravigliosa e trascinante danza macabra di metal gotico dalle tinte orrorifiche e cinematografiche, manipolando il colore nero con melodie al tempo stesso ammalianti, inusuali e coinvolgenti, in grado di insinuarsi nella testa come lugubri ossessioni. Se la voce di Johannes Andersson è la caratteristica più facilmente riconducibile al buio delle foreste del metal nord europeo (riportando alla mente quella di Mikael Stanne dei Dark Tranquillity), è con le sbilenche melodie delle chitarre di Jonathan Hultén e Adam Zaars che si percepisce la profondità che si cela all'interno della cassa da morto. In questi ultimi anni solo Pallbearer, Ahab e pochi altri erano riusciti a coniugare atmosfere nebbiose e romantica malinconia con un filo di dissonanza apparentemente fragile, ma in realtà portante. Adesso, fortunatamente, abbiamo nuovi emaciati vampiri ad accompagnare i nostri incubi.

In recent years there have not been many vampires in metal undergrowth. Fauna inhabiting the black forests today is characterized by bearded dwarfs, rough, dirty and frightened by the idea of taking themselves too seriously. Or from old mummies far too serious - last, shrivelled, sacred monsters of this genre. When bands capable of mellow fascinating music like Tribulation arise from the coffin, it is impossible not to be hypnotized by the call of darkness. The music of these children of the night possesses all the spectral beauty and energy of eternal (if nourished with an adequate quantity of blood) youth and, at the same time, the sophisticated maturity of those who have lived an infinite number of nights. With their fourth album, the Swedes paint a marvelous and enthralling ghoulish dance of gothic metal with horror and cinematographic shades, manipulating the black colour with melodies at the same time bewitching, unusual and engaging, able to creep into the head like lugubrious obsessions. If Johannes Andersson voice is the most easily referable to the darkness of the northern European metal forests (calling to mind Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquility), it is with the lopsided melodies of Jonathan Hultén and Adam Zaars guitars that it is possible to perceive the depth lying within the dead body. In these last years only Pallbearer, Ahab and a few others had managed to combine foggy atmospheres and romantic melancholy with a thread of seemingly fragile, yet so important, dissonance. Fortunately now we have new emaciated vampires to accompany our nightmares.
