Siena Root – A Dream of Lasting Peace

Nonostante il nome, l'hard rock non è per niente rigido. In realtà è plasmabile come l’argilla e, se modellato da mani sapienti, può assumere forme sempre nuove, nonostante gli ingredienti di base siano sempre gli stessi. In tempi recenti il Nord Europa (e in particolare la Svezia) è diventato un vero e proprio laboratorio di manipolazione della materia sonora, che è stata più volte riportata alla sua matrice originaria (il blues) per poi essere ricomposta secondo tecniche consolidate a cavallo tra anni '60 e '70, con risultati sorprendentemente freschi e coinvolgenti. I Siena Root non sono certo gli ultimi arrivati in questa corrente di artisti, e con il loro A Dream of Lasting Peace festeggiano il traguardo del sesto full lenght in studio. Pur provenienti dalla fredda Stoccolma, i cinque musicisti impastano un’argilla blues che possiede il colore caldo della terra di Siena, fatto di canzoni in cui l'organo vince spesso il duello con la chitarra, accennando alla libertà dell’improvvisazione, ma senza mai indebolire l’organicità delle canzoni. Per dare forma alla terra, i cinque utilizzano le loro solide radici, costituite da nodi legnosi in cui si intrecciano il sound dei Deep Purple e quello dei Cream (e di molti altri a loro contemporanei, vedi la copertina ricca di esplicite citazioni). Una settimana lontani dai ritmi frenetici del nuovo millennio, isolati nelle sperdute terre del Nord, per catturare lo spirito di un’epoca lontana nel tempo, impastarne gli ingredienti costitutivi e generare, ancora una volta, splendide canzoni rock. Dimostrazione che anche la roccia è plasmabile.

In spite of its name, Hard rock is not rigid at all. It is actually mouldable like clay and, if shaped by skilled hands, it can take on ever new shapes, even though the basic ingredients are always the same. In recent times, Northern Europe (in particular Sweden) has become a real lab for manipulation of sound matter, which has been repeatedly bring back to its original matrix (blues), and then rebuilt according to well-established techniques of the 60s and 70s, with surprisingly lively engaging results. Siena Root are certainly not the latest in this path, and with their A Dream of Lasting Peace they celebrate the sixth full length in the studio. Although they come from the cold Stockholm, the five musicians mix a blues clay that has the warm color of the soil from Siena (the English umber), made of songs where the organ often wins the duel with the guitar, hinting at the freedom of improvisation, yet never weakening the organic unity of songs. To give shape to the soil, the five use their solid roots, made up of woody knots where the sound of Deep Purple and Cream (and many others contemporaries, as you can easily realize from the album cover, abounding of explicit quotations) are interwoven. A week away from the chaotic rhythms of the new millennium, isolated in the desolate lands of the North, to capture the spirit of a distant era, mix its constitutive ingredients and create gorgeous rock songs once again. Proof that also rock is mouldable.
