Già dalla copertina, l'omonimo album dei Deadsmoke richiama alla mente un pesante (Ufo)mammut che si aggira ai piedi di un ghiacciaio. Riff pesantissimi e imponenti si muovono con lentezza estenuante, come un pachiderma peloso in cerca di cibo tra distese di rocce moreniche e neve. Il gelo avvolge sia le gigantesche montagne sia le canzoni della band - che proprio alle pendici delle montagne (dell'Alto Adige) si è formata. Siamo ad alta quota, in una notte di Gennaio. Sarà per il freddo - che intorpidisce e fa perdere la sensibilità - o per quel cielo stellato che ipnotizza, fatto sta che l'effetto di questa musica è stordente, con evidenti richiami al doom cosmico di scuola Electric Wizard e Sleep, oltre che Ufomammut.  L'ottundimento è inoltre amplificato da alcuni echi space rock che sembrano risuonare tra quelle montagne (complice anche lo special guest Gabriele Fiori ai synth - Black Rainbows, nonché Heavy Psych Sounds Records, etichetta della band bolzanina). Qualche rovinosa frana di massi, in puro stile post metal (Tornado), dona inoltre movimento ad un disco altrimenti monolitico. Il mammut dei Deadsmoke è un animale estinto e non aggiunge particolari novità alla fauna del presente: ma è talmente vivo da far gola a tutti i cacciatori di queste sonorità. Se poi si pensa che si tratta di un cucciolo (questo è infatti il disco d'esordio del trio) è tanta la curiosità di sapere cosa combinerà "da grande" quando si distaccherà dalle orme dei padri.

The cover itself of Deadsmoke selftitled album is reminiscent of a heavy (UFO)mammoth wandering at the foothills of a glacier. Heavy imposing riffs move with exhausting slowness, like a hairy pachyderm looking for food amongst morainic rocks and snow. Chill envelops both the gigantic mountains and the songs of the band - band formed exactly at the (South Tyrol) mountain slopes. We are at high altitude, in a January night. Maybe for the cold - which numbs and makes you lose sensitivity - or maybe for the hypnotizing starry sky, the fact is that the effect of this music is deafening, with clear references to the cosmic doom of Electric Wizard and Sleep school, as well as Ufomammut. Obtundation is also amplified by some space rock echoes that seem to resonate up in those mountains (also thanks to special guest Gabriele Fiori on synth - Black Rainbows and Heavy Psych Sounds Records, label of the band from Bolzano). And there is also some disastrous landslide of boulders in pure post metal style (Tornado), giving movement to an otherwise monolithic album. Deadsmoke mammoth is an extinct animal and does not add special news to the fauna of the present time: but it is so alive as to be extremely tasty for all the hunters of these sounds. And if you think that it is just a puppy (it is the trio's debut album indeed) you cannot wait to see what it will look like when "grown up" and detached from fathers footsteps.
