Sono passati 8 anni dal concerto a Senigallia. Nel frattempo è uscito un altro album (Honor found in Decay, 2012) e uno nuovo è alle porte. La voglia di sentirli nuovamente dal vivo – e magari con suoni più potenti e degni della loro musica – è davvero tanta. Eccomi quindi in attesa dell’apertura dei cancelli di quella maxi festa da centro sociale allargato che è Festa Radio Onda D’Urto (giunta quest’anno alla sua XXV^ edizione). Una volta entrata vedo che il palco è qualcosa d’immenso, una roba da stadio. Dentro di me si accende la speranza che anche l’impianto audio sia mastodontico come il palco!

I primi a salire sul palco sono i Tesa. Il trio lettone suona una mezzora scarsa, ma in questa manciata di minuti e canzoni riesce a lasciare davvero il segno. Un post hardcore atmosferico davvero ben suonato, quasi strumentale, in cui delle belle legnate di suono e ritmiche (l’attacco dei loro riff è travolgente!) si amalgamano a melodie non banali e accattivanti. La rivelazione – per me! – della serata.

Seguono i Bachi da Pietra. È la prima volta che li sento live, ed il loro mix di blues rock, cantautorato, noise e post hardcore è la giusta miscela per riscaldare e al tempo stesso mitigare gli animi di chi è in attesa dell’apocalisse marcata Kelly - Von Till. Le ritmiche essenziali ed efficaci di Bruno Dorella (batterista anche di OvO e Ronin) sono la perfetta base e contraltare della chitarra da vero rocker di Giovanni Succi, nonché della sua voce calda e un po’ da bluesman. I pezzi si susseguono rapidi ed il pubblico apprezza tantissimo, tanto che c’è perfino lo spazio per un bis. 

Sono le 22:00 esatte quando sul palco salgono i Neurosis e tutto il pubblico viene letteralmente rapito dalla loro tempesta sonora. L’apertura è affidata alla titletrack di Times of Grace e la chiusura a Stones from the Sky (da A Sun that never sets): nel mezzo a questi due macigni c’è spazio per una (due per Given to the Rising e Honor found in Decay) canzone da ognuno dei loro album – con l’eccezione dei primi due e (con mio grande dispiacere!) The Eye of Every Storm – più un paio di pezzi nuovi, accattivante anticipazione del nuovo disco. Dalla mia posizione – centrale, a una quindicina di file dal palco – il suono sprigionato dai Neurosis è qualcosa di micidiale: è un fronte sonoro, una falange oplitica che marcia inesorabile verso le mie orecchie, una cavalleria lanciata al galoppo che travolge qualsiasi cosa incontri sul suo cammino. Le voci di Steve Von Till e Scott Kelly (nonché quella del bassista Dave Edwardson nei momenti in cui giunge in rinforzo agli altri due con le sue grida rabbiose!) sono stupende, potenti ed impeccabili dalla prima all’ultima nota. Due ore che volano via in un attimo. Due ore serrate, senza soste, cui non segue alcun bis. Due ore di concerto memorabile…e chi se l’è perso, si è perso davvero un grande live.

30 anni di carriera: non sentirli affatto, non essersi adagiati a guardare il proprio successo, avere ancora tanto da dire.

Neurosis + Bachi da Pietra + Tesa – 08.11.2016 – Festa Radio Onda D’Urto (Brescia)

It is 8 years since the concert in Senigallia. In the meanwhile, one album (Honor found in Decay, 2012) and a new one ready to be released. A great desire to see them live again – possibly with more powerful sounds, better suited to their music. And so here I am, waiting for the opening of that mega-party which is Festa Radio Onda D’Urto (this year at its 25th Edition). Once inside I saw that stage is something really huge, something you usually find inside a stadium. I cherish the hope that also the sound system is as much mastodontic as the stage!!!

Tesa are the first on stage. The trio from Latvia plays just half an hour, but in this bunch of minutes and songs they definitely hit the target. They play a really interesting atmospheric post hardcore, almost instrumental, with mighty sonic and rhythmic strokes (the attack of their riffs is overwhelming indeed!) perfectly mixed with catchy, not trivial, melodies. To me, the discovery of this night!

Then it is the turn of Bachi da Pietra. It is the first time I saw them live, and their mix of blues rock, singer/songwriting, noise and post hardcore is the right blend to warm up and at the same time relieve all the people waiting for the apocalypse branded Kelly – Von Till. Bruno Dorella (drummer in OvO and Ronin too) essential effective rhythmic are the perfect base and counteraltar of Giovanni Succi rock guitar and bluesman voice. Their songs quickly follow one another, the audience heartly enjoys the show and there is also time for enchores.

It is exactly 10:00 p.m. when Neurosis get on stage and all the audience is captivated by their sonic storm. The opening is Times of Grace titletrack, the farewell Stones from the Sky (from A Sun that never sets): in the middle, one (two for Given to the Rising and Honor found in Decay) song from each of their albums – with the exception of the first two and (with my deep sorrow!) The Eye of Every Storm – and a couple of new songs, attractive preview of the forthcoming album. I am in a central position, fifteen rows from the stage, and Neurosis sound is something really killing: it is a sonic front, a hoplite phalanx inexorably marching towards my ears, a galloping cavalry sweeping away everything on its way. Steve Von Till and Scott Kelly voices (and also Dave Edwardson one when he comes in reinforcement of the other two with his angry screams!) are wonderful, powerful and flawless from the first to the last note. Two hours of music flying away in a moment. Two hours without breaks or rests, without enchores. Two hours of unforgettable concert…and those who missed this event really missed an incredibly amazing live show. 

30 years of career. They do not show them at all. They did not rest on their past success. They still have so much to say.
