Una buona parte della musica rock degli ultimi decenni non avrebbe mai visto la luce senza la sofferenza e il malessere dei suoi autori. Liberarsi della negatività esprimendola sotto forma di materia sonora è un’operazione catartica che ha nutrito molti artisti, Årabrot compresi. E se nella musica della band norvegese la sofferenza ha sempre avuto un ruolo determinante, nell'ultimo album le vicende personali di Kjetil Nernes - mente del progetto - marchiano la musica del gruppo in modo ancor più profondo rispetto al passato. Affrontato un cancro alla gola, in The Gospel Nernes ha liberato inquietudini e malesseri, nonché rabbia e desiderio di rinascita. Un disco cupo, dissonante, acido e nervoso, che richiama tanto l’universo tetro e apocalittico degli Swans e del post punk più viscerale, quanto le ulcerose distorsioni del noise rock degli anni 80/90 (The Jesus Lizard, Melvins). Gli spigoli disturbanti della malattia nascondono un bruciante desiderio di riscatto e un impeto rabbioso, che rendono le nove canzoni immediate e coinvolgenti, per quanto emotivamente pesanti. Al settimo disco di Nernes hanno contribuito alcuni tra i musicisti più apprezzati dell’ambiente sperimentale (Stephen O’Malley, Andrew Liles, Ted Parsons), ma la grandezza di questo album risiede principalmente nella mente del norvegese, capace di far affiorare - e liberare - il "nero" in essa racchiuso.

A great part of last decades rock music would never have come into the world without the pain and discomfort of its authors. To free from negativity expressing it in the form of sound matter is a cathartic operation that has nurtured many artists, Årabrot included. And if in the music of the Norwegian band suffering has always played a key role, in their latest album Kjetil Nernes - mind of the project - personal events brand their music in an even deeper way than in the past. Faced with throat cancer, in The Gospel Nernes released anxieties and pains, as well as anger and desire for rebirth. A dark, dissonant, acid and nervous album, reminiscent of both Swans and most visceral post punk gloomy apocalyptic universe and 80s/90s noise rock ulcerous distortions (The Jesus Lizard, Melvins…). The disturbing edges of the disease hide a burning desire for redemption and an angry rush, making the nine songs immediate and engaging, although emotionally heavy. Some of the most appreciated experimental musicians (Stephen O’Malley, Andrew Liles, Ted Parsons…) have contributed to Nernes seventh full lenght, but the greatness of this album lies mainly in the mind of the Norwegian artist, able to bring out - and free - the "black" in it enclosed.
