La Gorilla’s Family riesce ad accaparrarsi l’ultima data del tour europeo dei Farflung e le riserva un fantastico secret show. La location è semplicemente perfetta e l’atmosfera che si respira – complici i padroni di casa/organizzatori dell’evento – è un mix ideale di convivialità, voglia di divertirsi e passione per la musica. Esattamente lo spirito giusto per il concerto di una band che ha fatto del viaggio – mentale e lisergico – l’essenza stessa del suo suono.

Il buio è sceso da poco quando attacca Black Snake Moan. One man band (il primo!) dalla Tuscia, il suo è un blues a tratti malinconico a tratti più tirato, che si muove a dorso di mulo attraverso i cactus e la polvere di un qualche deserto di cui non si conosce il nome, e che regala alcune aperture lisergiche (in stile Doors) davvero interessanti. Azzeccato preludio che introduce la giusta atmosfera per questa serata.

Ma le calde e ondeggianti note dell’introduzione vengono repentinamente spazzate via dalle mitragliate dei Gordo. Sulla loro pagina FB riportano come definizione del loro sound “come i Carcass che suonano i Jethro Tull” e forse forse quest’espressione dà un’idea di ciò che è in serbo per l’ascoltatore. Basso, batteria e piano, il loro suono è la commistione di generi ed influenze i più diversi e disparati, che fusi insieme creano qualcosa di nuovo e di perfettamente equilibrato nel suo delirio (senza ricordare altre bands incentrate sul binomio basso-batteria come gli Zu e i loro “cloni”, riuscendo a creare un proprio stile personale). Se il basso si nutre di riffs che attingono a certo stoner, il piano (chiamarlo tastiera è quasi riduttivo, o quantomeno fuorviante) si sorregge su strutture che richiamano il repertorio classico e una buona dose di prog anni 70. La batteria, poi, è una macchina da guerra hardcore, punto d’incontro delle forze ad un tempo attrattive e respingenti del trio milanese. Il pubblico (Farflung compresi!) apprezza tantissimo e li “costringe” ad un bis. Io attendo il loro album e spero davvero di risentirli presto in concerto!

Ed eccoci al momento in cui il tempo si dilata e si sfilaccia, deformandosi e deformando anche lo spazio in cui ci troviamo: i Farflung inondano i presenti con la liquidità e sinuosità del loro space rock super psichedelico  venato di stoner. Capitanati da Tommy Grenas – storico membro e co-fondatore della band losangelina – i 6 musicisti danno vita ad un concerto davvero spaziale. La sinergia dei membri dei Farflung è infatti qualcosa di unico. Naturalmente un po’ provati dopo 24 concerti in 24 giorni – e con una Abby Travis visibilmente raffreddata! – il loro live è impeccabile: ogni strumento risuona distintamente, ogni effetto scandisce la propria voce, il tutto si amalgama perfettamente e la musica sprigionata rapisce l’ascoltatore. Se tutti sono grandi musicisti, è pur vero che Grenas è quello che mi colpisce e conquista maggiormente: la voce in un multistrato di effetti, i synth sempre puntuali, la sua capacità di coordinare perfettamente la moltitudine di linee sonore intessuta dai vari componenti della band. Un grande musicista e una sorta di direttore d’orchestra space elettronica. Sono passati più di 20 anni dall’uscita di 25,000 Feet Per Second, il suono si è evoluto (ma non si è mai snaturato) e – ad eccezione di Grenas ed Ether – la formazione ha subito numerosi cambi, ma i Farflung hanno ancora tanto da dire (e l’appena uscito 5 ne dà lampante conferma!) e soprattutto sanno regalare un live di puro space rock psichedelico come se ne trovano pochi in circolazione.

Farflung + Gordo + Black Snake Moan – 06.18.2016 – Viterbo (Secret Show)

Gorilla’s Family manages to get the last date of Farflung European Tour: an amazing secret show. Location is simply perfect. Thanks to the hosts/event organizers, the atmosphere is the ideal mix of conviviality, will to have fun and passion for music. Exactly the right mood for the concert of a band that has made the (mental and lysergic) trip the very essence of its sound.

It just got dark when Black Snake Moan starts to play. One man band (the first one!) from Tuscia, his blues sounds sometimes melancholic sometimes a bit more groovy: it moves on a back of a mule through cactus and the dust and sand of a desert with an unknown name, and it has some really interesting lysergic (in Doors style) openings. Apt prelude for the attitude of this night.

But the warm wavy notes of the introduction are suddenly swept away by Gordo and their bursts of machine gun fire. On their FB page they report the definition of their sound as “like Carcass playing Jethro Tull” and maybe this expression gives an idea of what awaits the listener. Bass, drums and piano, their sound is the mingling of many different genres and influences capable of creating something new and perfectly balanced in its delirium (without being reminiscent of other bands focused on the bass/drums pairs like Zu and their “clones”, and having their own personal style). If the bass feeds on stoner-like riffs, the piano (calling it keyboards it is almost reductive, o at least misleading) stands upon classical music and 70s prog rock. Drums are a hardcore war machine, meeting point of the forces of the trio from Milan: forces which are at the same time attractive and distancing. The audience (Farflung included!) enjoys their gig a lot and asks them an encore. Personally, I am waiting for their album, hoping to attend to one of their concerts very soon.

And here we are at the moment in which time dilates, getting deformed and deforming the space in which we are: Farflung flood all those present with the fluidity and sinuousity of ther super psychedelic space rock, flavoured with stoner. Captained by Tommy Grenas – historical member and co-founder of the band from LA – the 6 musicians perform a really amazing space concert. The synergy of Farflung members is something unique, indeed. Naturally a bit tired after 24 gigs in 24 days – and with Abby Travis visibly having a cold! – their show is flawless: each musical instrument vibrates distinctly, each effect clearly articulates its voice, the whole perfectly amalgamates and their music enchants the listener. If all of them are great musicians, I have to admit that Grenas is the one who mostly impresses me: his voice in a multilayer of sound effects, synths always perfect, his abililty to masterly coordinate the multitude of sonic lines of all the members of the band. A great musician and a sort of electronic space conductor. More than 20 years since the release of 25,000 Feet Per Second, the sound has evolved (but it has never lost its nature) and – with the exception of Grenas and Ether – there have been many changes in the line-up, yet Farflung has still a lot to say (and the just released 5 gives striking confirmation!) and above all they are able to perform a concert of pure psychedelic space rock that has got few equals.
