OvO sonorizzano Frankenstein (J. Whale, 1931) - 21.03.2019 - Ex Cinema Aurora (Livorno)

In passato mi era già capitato di assistere alla proiezione di film degli anni '20 e '30 sonorizzati dal vivo. Per lo più si trattava di un trio jazz che faceva da narrazione in musica a pietre miliari dell'espressionismo tedesco.

Quello di stasera però è un evento che va oltre. Infatti la colonna sonora live del Frankenstein di James Whale è affidata ad una vera e propria band, e di quelle che sicuramente lasciano il segno e l'impronta della loro (spiccata) personalità: gli OvO.

Se il film di Whale, del 1931, è narrazione cinematografica di una modernità ed attualità sconcertante, la musica degli OvO è il "canto" post-moderno che spinge ancora più in alto l'asticella dell'espressività e della distorta - ed al tempo stesso centratissima - visionarietà di questa pellicola. Alla crudeltà dei fotogrammi ed del loro nudo racconto, la musica degli OvO aggiunge un carico da 100 di delirio e turbamento. E nelle parti in cui la musica si fa più pesante e distorta, più noise e più marcia (quando il Dr. Frankestein dà vita alla sua creatura durante il temporale e quando il popolino cieco ed inferocito bracca e manda al rogo il "mostro" generato dagli esperimenti del giovane spregiudicato dottore), la fusione fra immagine e suono trova il suo perfetto compimento. Si ha quasi l'impressione di non poter più vedere la pellicola di Whale senza la musica degli OvO.

Abbinamento di immagini e musica perfetto, perfettamente inserito nella cornice dell'Ex Cinema Aurora, che sembrava davvero esserne il naturale palcoscenico, la naturale scenografia di contorno.

In the past I had already attended to 20s/30s movies with live soundtracks. Mostly it was a jazz trio acting as a narration in music of milestones of German expressionism.

But tonight's one is an event that goes further. In fact the live soundtrack of James Whale's Frankenstein is entrusted to a real band, and of those that surely leave the mark and the sign of their (distinct) personality: OvO.

If Whale's movie (directed in 1931) is a cinematographic narration of a disconcerting modernity and newness, OvO's music is the post-modern "chant" that pushes even higher the bar of expressiveness and of the distorted - and at the time same extremely centered - visionary nature of this film. To the cruelty of the frames and their naked story, OvO's music adds a extra load of delirium and disturbance. And in those parts where music becomes heavier and more distorted, more noisy and more rotten (when Dr. Frankestein gives life to his creature during the storm and when the blind angry rabble hunts and sends to the stake the "monster" generated by the experiments of the young unscrupulous doctor), the fusion between image and sound finds its perfect fulfillment. One almost has the impression of not being able to watch Whale's movie without OvO's music.

Pefect matching of images and music, perfectly inserted in the setting of the Ex Aurora Cinema, which really seemed to be its natural stage, the natural contour scenery.
