The Gooch Palms + Unkle Funkle - 24.11.2016 - Cafè Albatross (Pisa)

Anticipo di weekend con concerto al Cafè Albatross.

Il via lo da Unkle Funkle. E' uno strano incrocio tra J Mascis e uno studente di Fisica disperso dentro ad un videogame di 30 anni fa. Con una spregiudicatezza ammirevole lancia "improbabili" basi al computer (i cui suoni fanno rivalutare quelli della Bontempi System 5), e con trasporto emotivo ed ardente passionalità regala delle toccanti reinterpretazioni di classici pop degli anni 80. Tre note di chitarra e due tonnellate di mancanza di pudore. Estrapolando dalle reazioni dei presenti: “se fossi ubriaco perso, questo sarebbe il concerto della vita!” 

Nel loro gusto per l'eccesso e per il kitsch, i Gooch Palms non sono assolutamente puro e semplice intrattenimento: suonano e lo fanno anche bene! Il duo australiano (doppia voce, chitarra per lui, rullante + timpano per lei) sembra in overdose da Coca Cola e gommosi orsetti fluo, da quanto suona americanamente esagerato e frizzante. Il loro garage-pop-punk'n'roll è caramelloso come zucchero filato (rosa!), ma non per questo suona banale. Anzi! Sarà per l’indole punkeggiante alla Ramones, oppure per certi passaggi che odorano di indie americano anni '80, sempre al limite tra melodia catchy e sottile dissonanza lo-fi, o - ancora - sarà per il loro tiro, fatto sta che vederli dal vivo merita, e non poco!

Pre-weekend party with a concert at Cafè Albatross.

Unkle Funkle, first of all. He is a strange crossbreed between J Mascis and a Physics student lost in a 30 years ago videogame. With admirable audacity he launches "improbable" bases (whose sounds are reassessing those of Bontempi System 5), and with emotional ardor and passion he performs touching reinterpretations of 80s pop classics. Three guitar notes and two tons of shamelessness. Extrapolating from the reactions of those present: "If I were completely wasted, this would be the best concert of my life!" 

In their taste for excess and kitsch, The Gooch Palms are definitely not pure and simple entertainment: they do play and they do it well! The Australian duo (two voices, guitar for him, floor tom + snare drum for her) seems to have an overdose of Coca Cola and fluo bear-shaped gummy candies, considering how much exaggerated, bubbly, sparkling they sound. Their garage-pop-punk'n'roll is sugary as (pink!) cotton candy, but it sounds by no means trite. On the contrary! Maybe for the punkish nature à la Ramones, or thanks to some phrasings reminiscent of certain 80s American indie rock, constantly on the edge between catchy melody and subtle lo-fi dissonance, or maybe for their groove, the fact is that it is really worth to see them live!
