Il suono dei Neurosis nasce dalla tenace stabilità con la quale i suoi membri collaborano insieme dalla metà degli anni 80. Ma se la maturità della loro musica trova spiegazione nell'affiatamento tra i componenti di una formazione rimasta invariata da decenni, l'urgenza espressiva mostrata con l'ultimo album - Fires within Fires - è inusuale per una band che non ha mai attinto nuove energie dall'esterno. L'energia proviene tutta da dentro. La danza liquida e dissonante nella quale si avvitano e si piegano le chitarre, prima di compattarsi in un muro di suono mastodontico nell'iniziale Bending Light, evidenzia tanto il legame profondo che unisce questi musicisti, quanto la loro capacità di mantenere accesa la fiamma della creatività. Così come il perfetto intrecciarsi delle voci di Scott Kelly e Steve Von Till, che paiono una cosa sola nella conclusiva Reach. Forse il fatto che negli ultimi anni Kelly e Von Till abbiano scavato sempre più in profondità dentro loro stessi (attraverso progetti solisti o collaborazioni con altri musicisti) è servito per trovare una nuova forma di energia interiore. Un’energia matura, non più diretta all’esplorazione di territori sconosciuti, bensì allo sviluppo di una personalità sempre più solida. Lo spirito di ricerca che ha reso rivoluzionari alcuni capolavori del passato è sopito, ma la forza annichilente e al tempo stesso rigeneratrice delle loro composizioni è più viva che mai. Quando sporcano di fango gli arpeggi darkwave o gli intrecci pinkfloydiani di basso e chitarra  in Reach, oppure quando si avventurano nelle foreste del Von Till solista in Broken Ground, prima di travolgere tutto con riff dal vigore sorprendente, i cinque di Oakland dimostrano che la montagna che hanno costruito in 30 anni non ha perso neanche un granello.

Neurosis sound originates from tenacious stability with which its members have been working together since mid 80s. But if the maturity of their music is explained by the understanding of the elements of a lineup that has remained unchanged for decades, the expressive urgency shown with their latest album - Fires Within Fires - is unusual for a band that has never got new energy from the outside. Their energy comes entirely from within. The liquid dissonant dance in which guitars spin and bend themselves, before they get compacted into a gigantic wall of sound in the initial Bending Light, highlights both the strong bond between these musicians and their ability to keep the flame of creativity alight. As well as the perfect interweaving of Scott Kelly and Steve Von Till voices, which appear to be one only thing in the final Reach. Maybe the fact that, in recent years, Kelly and Von Till have always dug deeper into themselves (through solo projects and collaborations with other musicians) has been useful to find a new form of inner energy. A mature energy, no longer directed to the exploration of unknown territories, yet oriented to the development of a more and more solid personality. The spirit of research that has made revolutionary some masterpieces of the past is now dormant, but the strength of their songs - at the same time annihilating and regenerating - is more alive than ever. When they soil with mud the darkwave arpeggios or the “pinkfloydian” weaving of bass and guitar in Reach, or when they venture into the forests of soloist Von Till in Broken Ground, before they overwhelm everything with striking force riffs, the five from Oakland show that the mountain they have been building in 30 years has not lost even a speck.
