Che cosa è stato realmente il grunge? Un vero e proprio genere musicale, un coeso movimento artistico o semplicemente una creatura inventata dalle major? Certamente rappresenta il rifiuto degli ideali degli anni 80, in cerca della pura energia rock degli anni 70. A dispetto delle differenze esistenti tra le band della scena di Seattle, le caratteristiche comuni sono la sua natura diretta e istintiva, gli ideali indipendenti, gli abrasivi suoni hard rock, le voci profonde e i temi introspettivi dei testi. Temple of the Dog – collaborazione tra i membri delle più interessanti band della scena, pubblicato appena prima che queste raggiungessero il successo -  è pura essenza grunge rock, senza il tipico suono grunge (se mai questo è esistito!). E’ un tributo all’hard rock degli anni 70, con straripanti improvvisazioni blues e melodie vocali soul, composto in ricordo di Andrew Wood: pioniere del sound di Seattle, simbolo del tragico destino legato a questa musica.

What grunge rock really was? Was it a real musical genre, a cohesive artistic movement or simply a creature invented by majors? Certainly it represents the denial of 80s ideals, in search of pure rock energy of the 70s. Despite the differences amongst the bands of Seattle scene, its common features are instinctive direct nature, independent ideals, hard rock abrasive sounds, deep voices and introspective themes. Temple of the Dog - collaboration of members from the most interesting bands of the scene, published just before they reached success - is pure grunge rock essence, without typical grunge sound (if it really ever existed!). It is a tribute to 70s hard rock, with overflowing blues improvisations and soul vocal melodies, composed in memory of Andrew Wood: pioneer of Seattle sound, symbol of the tragic destiny bounded to this music.
