Fin dai primi ascolti di Ecate, ho atteso il concerto degli Ufomammut: il nuovo album mi è subito sembrato perfetto per la dimensione live. Ho dovuto aspettare qualche mese, ma l’attesa è stata ben ripagata!

Il duo bolognese degli Hyperwülff apre la serata con un post hardcore screziato di sludge e doom degno delle migliori annate del genere. Potenti e travolgenti, sono solo in 2 sul palco, ma potrebbero essere in 6 come i Cult of Luna, tanto è spesso il loro muro di suono. Perfetti anche nelle linee vocali, che davvero ricordano gli Isis dei primi album, in soli 30 minuti gli Hyperwüllf mi conquistano, riportandomi indietro di 10 anni, ma senza darmi l’impressione di un deja vu.

A seguire un’altra band bolognese. Three Eyes Left. Stoner doom allo stato puro. Ossessivi ed alienanti nei loro riffs, le canzoni scorrono nel loro magma impantanante, ben supportate da una voce marcia il giusto, che mi ricorda un po’ Buzz Osborne. Dopo la furia sludge dell’apertura, la frenata è brusca e si resta invischiati in questo trip di bassi e strofe squadrate, figlie di genitori importanti come Black Sabbath e Saint Vitus.

Lili Refrain arriva sul palco con chitarra, effetti e boa rosso-nero di piume di struzzo, e io sono ben contenta di rivederla dal vivo dopo soli due mesi e mezzo. La sua voce e la sua chitarra sono sempre affascinanti: catturano ed ipnotizzano il pubblico. La scaletta è incentrata su Kawax, e Nature Boy e 666 Burns sono l’apice di un set purtroppo penalizzato da alcuni problemi tecnici. L’ampli non è il suo e sfortunatamente sembra non reggere come dovrebbe la sovrapposizione delle tracce looppate, ed il fonico – poco presente e puntuale nell’ascoltare le richieste che giungono dal palco – stenta a sopperire a queste carenze tecniche. Peccato per queste sbavature, che non offuscano comunque la bravura e la resa live di Lili.

Ed infine Ufomammut! Grandi, grandissimi! Ecate è un album da suonare live: l’ho pensato dal primo momento ed ora ne ho la “prova provata”. Connubio perfetto delle componenti “ufo” e “mammut” della band, le nuove canzoni sono macigni sonori che incombono sul pubblico, stordendolo con la psichedelia dei suoni e le dilatazioni space dei riff. La batteria è regina, e scandisce l’incedere elefantino della musica del trio di Tortona. I pezzi si susseguono quasi senza soluzione di continuità. Un’unica grande suite, un unico monolitico movimento musicale che assorbe e rapisce l’ascoltatore. I suoni migliorano man mano che i minuti scorrono, riuscendo a creare un impasto sonoro in cui ogni strumento risalta come voce solista e membro del coro: tutto si fonde in un’onda sonora che è simultaneamente il tutto e la parte. Dal marzo 2006 (la prima volta che li ho sentiti dal vivo…sempre a Bologna!) ad oggi, il suono della band è mutato più volte e i loro concerti sono sempre stati un valore aggiunto per la loro musica. A distanza di 10 anni dal primo live, posso tranquillamente dire che gli Ufomammut continuano a non risparmiare una sola goccia di sudore, e la loro musica - al tempo stesso sempre più psichedelica e granitica – trova il suo ideale e perfetto compimento proprio sul palco.

I have been waiting for a new Ufomammut concert since I first listened to Ecate. From the very beginning I thought of their latest full lenght as simply perfect to be performed live. I had to wait a few months, but in the end it was worth it!

Hyperwülff - duo from Bologna - opens the evening with their sludgy, doomy post hardcore worthy of the best years of the genre. Powerful and enthralling, their extremely thick wall of sound let think of a six members combo (like Cult of Luna) on stage, instead of the two young guys actually performing. Perfect even in the vocals - that really remind me of the first albums of Isis - in just 30 minutes Hyperwüllf win me, bringing me back in time of 10 years, yet without leaving me with the impression of a deja vu.

Then, another band from Bologna: Three Eyes Left. Stoner doom in its pure essence. Obsessive and alienating in their riffs, songs flow on in their bogging magma, well supported by a rightly sick voice, partly reminiscent of a certain Buzz Osborne. After the sludgy fury of the opening, the breaking is abrupt and we get mired in this trip of basses and squared strophes, offspring of such illustrious parents as Black Sabbath and Saint Vitus.

Lili Refrain gets on stage with her guitar, effects and red-black ostrich feather scarf and I am well glad to see her live once again after only two months and half. Her voice and her guitar are always fascinating and captivating: they capture and hypnotize the audience. The set list is focused on Kawax, and Nature Boy and 666 Burns are the apex of a show unfortunately penalized by some technical problems. Amp on stage is not her own and it seems unable to cope with the overlaps of looped guitar riffs, and the sound engineer – a bit absent and inattentive to requests coming from the stage – is lacking in overcoming tecnhical deficiencies. These drawbacks are a bit annoying, anyway they do not overshadow Lili’s talent and her show.

Finally Ufomammut! Great, amazing! Ecate has to be played live: I thought it from the very first moment I listened to it and now I have got the final proof I was right. Perfect marriage of the “ufo” and “mammoth” parts of the band, the new songs are sonic boulders looming upon the audience, stunning it with their psychedelic sounds and spacey dilations of their riffs. Drum is the queen and punctuates the elephantine march of the music of the trio from Tortona. A single hugesuite, a single monolithic musical movement that absorbs and abducts the listener. The quality of sounds improves as the concert goes on, managing to create a sonic dough in which each musical instrument stands out both as a soloist and as a member of a choir: everything melts in a sonic wave which is the whole and the part at the very same time. Since March 2006 (the first time I saw them live…in Bologna!) to present, the sound of the band has changed several times and their concerts have always been an added value for their music. After 10 years since the first live show I can safely say that Ufomammut continue to give all of themselves, and their music – at the same time more psychedelic and more granitic – finds its perfect and ideal fulfillment right on stage.
