Corso base in 3 lezioni sulle evoluzioni del thrash metal, da sound grezzo e festaiolo per nerd brufolosi e ubriachi a musica strutturalmente complessa e concettualmente fantascientifica/distopica per nerd brufolosi fissati con il Commodore 64 e i b-movie post apocalittici.

La serata del Cage viene aperta da un classico assalto thrash metal old school, operato dai Sofisticator. Sporchi e veloci come il genere richiede, la band scioglie i muscoli del collo a tutti i metallari capelloni presenti. Pur senza apportare particolari novità al genere, il gruppo fiorentino (nel quale militano alcuni membri dei Sulphur) convince e diverte. Consigliatissimi agli amanti di queste sonorità.

Seguono gli Acid Death, che fin dal primo accordo saturano i timpani dei presenti con suoni troppo compressi e con distorsioni troppo digitali per il thrash/death da loro proposto. Meglio quando si spostano su composizioni futuribili e post industriali alla Meshuggah/Fear Factory, dove, pur senza offrire idee particolarmente interessanti, almeno non danneggiano le canzoni.

Inizia poi la lezione vera e propria. I Coroner sono tra le massime autorità in materia, e lo dimostrano con un concerto in cui l'impatto e l'energia non sono mai soffocati dalla complessità tecnica dei brani. Come narra il luogo comune sugli svizzeri, anche i Coroner sono precisissimi, ma ancor di più mostrano potenza, dinamismo e infinita fantasia. A veloci sfuriate alternano mid tempo carichi di groove, dal sapore meccanico e industriale, collegando i diversi passaggi con arzigogolati, ma sempre convolgenti, labirinti ritmici. Gli assoli di Tommy T. Baron e la mentalità esplicitamente progressiva e sperimentatrice delle melodie, dimostrano quanto questa band sia stata fondamentale nel piegare il thrash metal in forme inedite, che dalla seconda metà degli anni 90 in poi, diventeranno quasi usuali grazie a band come i Meshuggah. Il fatto che in certi frangenti sprigionino un'incontenibile energia assimilabile a quella degli Helmet, band neanche lontanamente assimilabile al classico ambiente metal, la dice lunga su quanto questi svizzeri abbiano abbattuto i confini del genere. Riunitisi nel 2010, la band non ha ancora pubblicato il seguito di Grin (1993) e si è per ora "limitata" a concerti memorabili, come quello del Cage. Visti i risultati, la speranza per un nuovo lavoro diventa quasi un'esigenza.

Speriamo che questo corso sul thrash metal progressivo e fantascientifico preveda un secondo modulo (magari con una bella lezione tenuta dai Meshuggah) dello stesso livello del primo!

The evening at The Cage is opened by Sofisticator and their old school thrash metal assault. Filthy and fast as the genre needs, their songs introduce the headbanging ritual for all the longhaired metalheads. Even though they do not revolutionize the genre, the band from Firenze (featuring some members of Sulphur) impresses and entertains. Heartly reccomended to lovers of these sounds.

Then Acid Death – and from their very first chord they saturate the eardrums with too compressed sounds and too digital distorsions for their thrash/death setlist. Things go better when they play their Meshuggah/Fear Factory-like futuristic, post-industrial songs: nothing new on the horizon, yet at least songs are non damaged by poor sounds.

Finally the actual lesson. Coroner are one of the leading authorities in this field, and they offer clear evidence of this with a great show in which impact and energy are never choked by the technical complexity of the songs. In full respect of the commonplace on Swiss, Coroner are really extremely precise: yet above all they show power, dynamism and infinite creativity. Fast oubursts, mechanical/industrial groovy mid tempo, convoluted – yet enthrolling – rhythmic mazes. Tommy T. Baron solos and the prog, experimetal attitude of melodies are evidence of how influential Coroner were in giving new shapes to thrash metal (new shapes that have become almost usual from the second half of 90s, thanks to bands such as Meshuggah). The uncontainable, Helmet-like energy of some passages tells us how far they went from the boundaries of the genre. After their reunion in 2010 they have not yet released the sequel of Grin (1993) and they are “simply” playing memorable concerts, like this one at The Cage. Considering the high quality of their music and performance, the hope for a new album becomes almost a need.

I really hope that this mini-course on prog, sci-fi thrash metal will be followed by a second level of the same great quality of the first (hopefully with a beautiful lesson by Meshuggah)!
