Karma to Burn + Mr. Bison + Room 6 – 09/07/2016 – Theremin (Cinquale, MS)

Qualche anno fa ho ritrovato in un cassetto il flyer di un concerto dei Karma To Burn al Baraonda (locale nel quale trascorrevo i sabato sera con la stessa frequenza con la quale un ultra-cattolico integralista presenzia la messa domenicale). Il concerto me l'ero perso ed il ritrovamento del flyer mi aveva fatto mangiare le mani, perché nel frattempo la band si era sciolta. Per una volta, però, il tempo ha aggiustato le occasioni perdute in passato. I Karma to Burn si sono infatti riformati (e ho avuto occasione di vederli già altre due volte, dal 2009 a ora) e il Baraonda, cambiato il suo volto dopo diverse vicissitudini, ha riaperto come Theremin e stasera ospita proprio il trio stoner del West Virginia.

I primi a salire sul palco del locale versiliese sono i pisani Room 6, che propongono uno stoner rock elastico trascinato da riff zeppeliniani, sul quale si inseriscono armonizzazioni vocali ben calibrate, testi in italiano e uno spiccato senso della melodia, a tratti dal sapore prog anni 70. La loro è una proposta originale e molto interessante che merita di essere approfondita.

Cambio palco rapidissimo ed ecco i Mr. Bison. Il trio parte subito forte e libera il suo stoner rock cinetico senza fermarsi un attimo. Rock sudato, valvolare, strabordante di energia, arricchito da ottimi suoni e da un intreccio vocale ancor più convincente rispetto al concerto che tennero di spalla ai Black Rainbows, qualche mese fa. Nonostante il caldo e le luci - a tratti assenti - che a volte li han costretti a suonare al buio, l’impatto è travolgente e la loro musica si conferma al tempo stesso immediata e ricercata, grazie al perfetto equilibrio di riff diretti e ritmiche complesse, con una ricerca sonora mai banale (bellissimo il lavoro della chitarra che copre anche le frequenze solitamente ad appannaggio del basso).

Dei Karma to Burn originari è rimasto solo Will Mecum, ma non è andato smarrito l’amore per la materia prima del rock: il riff. Nello stoner del trio americano viene infatti esaltata l’essenziale - ma insuperabile! - energia primordiale dei buoni vecchi riff di chitarra. Groove dal sapore sabbioso, al quale contribuisce la batteria potente e robusta di Evan Devine, nell'alternarsi di massicce mazzate e ripartenze a tutta velocità, valorizzate da distorsioni sature e calde. Nonostante si senta un po' la mancanza del dinamismo dello storico bassista Rich Mullins, la band suona compatta e trascinante. Messo definitivamente in soffitta l’esperimento a due chitarre e "sporadica" voce (quella di Daniel Davies dei Year Long Disaster) proposta nel tour del 2010 e che si riallacciava alle atmosfere cupe del disco d’esordio (unico album "cantato" della loro carriera), i Karma to Burn ritornano ai tempi degli splendidi Almost Heaten e Wild Wonderful Purgatory (molti i pezzi proposti da questi due classici), cioè ai tempi del loro vecchio (e per me perduto) concerto al Baraonda. Stranamente il tempo mi ha offerto una seconda possibilità con questo fantastico concerto, che mi ha concesso una sorta di salto nel passato, facendomi recuperare lo show di uno dei migliori gruppi stoner in circolazione, perso per chissà quale motivo.

Karma to Burn + Mr. Bison + Room 6 – 07/09/2016 – Theremin (Cinquale, MS)

Few years ago I found in a drawer a flyer of a Karma To Burn concert at Baraonda (a venue where I used to spend my Saturday nights as often as an ultra-Catholic integralist attends Sunday Mass). I missed that concert and the finding of that flyer made me a bit disappointed and depressed, because in the meantime the band split up. However, the time adjusted this lost opportunity. Karma To Burn reformed (and I already attended a couple of gigs since 2009) and Baraonda, after various ups and downs, has now reopened as Theremin and tonight hosts the stoner trio from West Virginia.

First on stage Room 6, from Pisa. They play an elastic stoner rock, with Led Zep-tasted riffs, well-balanced vocal harmonies, Italian lyrics and a 70s progish sense of melody. Interesting and original approach which deserves to be deepened.

Ultra rapid change on stage and it is time for Mr. Bison. They attack as a fury with their kinetic stoner rock. Valvular sweaty rock, with overflowing energy, great sounds and a vocal interweaving which sounds even better than in the gig with Black Rainbows few months ago. In spite of the sweltering heat and some light absences on stage (at times forcing them to play in the dark), the impact of their show is really enthralling and captivating and their music confirms itself to be at the same time immediate and refined, thanks to the perfect balance of direct riffs and complex rhythms, with a never banal sound research (really impressive the guitar, able to cover even the sound frequencies usually typical of the bass).

Will Mecum is the only original member of Karma To Burn on stage tonight, anyway the love for the raw material of rock - the riff - is still intact. The stoner of the American trio is indeed an exaltation of the essential - and unbeatable! - primal energy of damn good guitar riffs. Sandy-tasted groove, enhanced by the the powerful heavy drums of Evan Devine, alternating massive blows and full speed attacks, enriched by warm, full distortions. Despite feeling a bit the lack of the dynamism of the historical bassist Rich Mullins, the band sounds compact and rousing. Definitively put aside the experiment with two guitars and "sporadic" singing (Daniel Davies of Year Long Disaster) of 2010 tour - close to the gloomy atmospheres of the debut album (the only one with a singer in the lineup) - Karma To Burn come back to the days of the amazing Almost Heaten and Wild Wonderful Purgatory (indeed there are many tracks of this two albums in tonight setlist), that is to say to the time of the (for me lost) gig at Baraonda. Unexpectedly time has given me a second chance with this great concert, allowing me a sort of jump into the past, making me recover the - inexplicably missed - show of one of the best stoner bands ever.
