Moaning Cities – D.Klein

Moaning Cities – D.Klein
(EXAG' Records, 2016)

In Belgium Sun does not shine with the same warmth and vivacity as in California. The sky is hazy, the atmoshpere is darker and the temperature is colder.  This is the reason why Moaning Cities (young band from Brussels) psychedelia owns the soul of the autumnal New York of The Velvet Underground, while showing some affinity with the Californian summer of love. Their rock is electric and full of energy, such as that one of a psych garage band (they remind The Black Angels, and aldo the masters The 13th Floor Elevators), yet bathed in hazy narcoleptic passages, on the borders of the German kosmische Musik. The Meunier brothers intertwine their voices (male and female) and their instruments (the soft and enveloping Juliette bass and the liquid Valerian guitar) while Timothee Sinagra lets his 6-string run towards the edge of dissonance. The melodies, vital and vigorous (Expected, Vertigo Rising), dilate themselves, hallucinogenic like Jim Morrison mind in acid. Sometimes wrapping themselves in sensual sinusoids (Sex Sells), sometimes merging the American lysergic school with Eastern spirituality (sitar sound on Yell-O-Bahn). Significantly, these hints of cultural mixing come from Belgium - the heart of Europe, as well as one of the countries of the old continent in which the relationship between these different cultures is more complicated. Merging more deeply all these different elements could be the springboard for the real qualitative leap that the Belgian band deserves, considering the fascinating results achieved with D.Klein.
