Desertfest London 2016 – Day 3

[Electric Wizard + Trouble + Elder + Monolord + Ohhms]

Terzo e ultimo (purtroppo!) giorno di Desertfest. E si riparte scendendo nell’Underworld per sentirci gli Ohhms. Set breve e intensissimo, che lascia senza fiato. L’impatto e la pesantezza che hanno su disco, dal vivo risultano distorte, alterate e rese ancor più viscerali da una marcata componente post-hardcore. La botta creata da chitarre e batteria è impressionante e ingoia il cantato marcio, mentre il basso deraglia nel noise. Il climax creato dai momenti post rock libera la tensione in esplosioni di furia ben sintetizzate dall’attitudine del cantante e del bassista, in perenne movimento. Si è contemporaneamente travolti dalla potenza sludge dei riffs e rapiti da passaggi ed assoli di chitarra che escono fuori con lucida e cristallina bellezza. Mezzora soltanto, ma davvero incredibile.

Dopo un ultimo break nella splendida atmosfera dell’Our Black Heart, vero e proprio cuore del festival, dove i musicisti vengono a bersi una birra insieme agli appassionati arrivati da tutta Europa, ci spostiamo al Koko, il locale che ospita uno dei palchi del Desertfest per la sola giornata conclusiva. 

Entriamo alle 16:00, per rimanere in questo locale dall’aspetto sontuoso fino a fine serata. Circondati da rosse pareti e stucchi dorati-bronzati, scendiamo nella platea (che si sta sempre più affollando!) per goderci il live dei Monolord. Doom ne hai? Questo power trio svedese ne ha da vendere! Quintessenza di pesantezza e lentezza, il loro è uno stoner-doom dal sapore psichedelico che, nel suo essere possente e monolitico, risulta davvero carico di tiro. I suoni sono perfetti – così come la voce di Thomas Jäger che, alterata da riverberi ed echi, sembra provenire da un’altra dimensione – ed esaltano tanto le canzoni del primo album (Empress Rising) quanto del secondo (Vænir), accompagnate da bellissime proiezioni sullo sfondo del palco. Band che se già incanta su disco, dal vivo ha davvero una marcia in più.

Sembrava impossibile, ma il Koko riesce a riempirsi ancora di più: gli Elder devono avere lo stesso potere attrattivo avuto ieri dai Conan. E come ieri saliamo ai piani alti del locale, e ci troviamo un perfetto palchetto da cui seguire il resto delle bands. Se su disco il trio americano colpisce soprattutto per la bellezza prog e psichedelica delle melodie, dal vivo quello che davvero sorprende è la potenza rock delle loro canzoni. L’impatto, la carica e l’energia sprigionate sul palco sono quelle di una grande rock band. E il pubblico, che spesso si lancia in un pogo scatenato, conferma questa impressione. Se la voce di Nick Di Salvo parte forse un po’ in sordina e necessita di un paio di canzoni per riscaldarsi e splendere, musicalmente la band è fin da subito impeccabile e letteralmente trascinante. La complessità dei brani mai offusca l’immediatezza e la carica della loro musica. Il pubblico è esaltato e gli Elder si accaparrano una quantità di applausi, ovazioni ed incitamento davvero mostruosa, ma davvero tutta meritata!

Ed è poi il momento dei Trouble. Oldies but goodies: questa potrebbe essere la ultra-sintetica recensione del loro incredibile concerto. Oltre 35 anni di doom e non sentirli affatto. I pilastri storici della band di Chicago sono i due veterani chitarristi – Rick Wartell e Bruce Franklin – ma di grande impatto è anche il cantante Kyle Thomas, con una voce perfetta e potente per tutta la durata del concerto, e una grinta davvero notevole. Il loro doom metal è carico di Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, thrash, NWOBHM e anche tanti anni 70, e la loro scaletta – che propone anche alcuni brani del nuovo disco – è davvero esaltante per chi come noi non disdegna affatto il lato più classicamente metal di questo genere. Davvero imperdibili!

Culmine della serata, gli Electric Wizard. Ormai riconosciuti come uno dei massimi nomi in ambito doom metal, sono la degna chiusura del “lato doom” del festival (mentre per il lato più industrial e sperimentale, la chiusura è affidata ai Godflesh che contemporaneamente stanno suonando all’Electric Ballroom). A poco più di 10 anni dal primo concerto della band capitanata da Jus Oborn al quale abbiamo assistito, l’impatto e il fascino dei loro live è immutato. Con la fine del secondo pezzo i suoni raggiungono il bilanciamento perfetto e la potenza delle loro distorsioni travolge l’intero Koko, che si esalta scatenando spesso un gran pogo giù in platea. La scaletta è incentrata soprattutto sulle visioni horror e polverose che dominano la loro musica da Witchcult Today in poi, anche se non mancano dilatazioni cosmiche e allucinogene. La voce di Jus Oborn è perfetta e perfetta è anche la classica abbinata di outtakes di b-movies di film di genere, sempre ricercati e azzeccati. Se il nuovo batterista Simon Poole non ha la devastante potenza di Mark Greening, il suo tocco fluido rende ancora più sottili le tenebrose atmosfere della band.  Il finale è affidato ad una clamorosa versione di Funeralopolis, devastante per la sua bellezza e potenza e che fa letteralmente venir giù l’intero teatro. Una grandiosa conferma, un perfetto finale per questa tre giorni di Desertfest!

Ora non rimane che un’ultima birra all’Underworld (dove intanto è iniziato il party di chiusura con appropriato dj set) e attendere il bill del prossimo anno!

Desertfest London 2016 – Day 3

Third and (unfortunately!) last day at Desertfest. And we start this last round going downstairs into the Underworld to listen to Ohhms. Short and extremely intense set: one that leaves you breathless. The impact and heaviness of the albums is altered, distorted and made more visceral during the concert thanks to a marked post-hardcore element. The huge sound of guitars and drums is really impressive and it swallows the rotten vocals, while the bass derails into noise. The climax created by post rock openings releases tension in bursts of fury well represented by singer and vocalist – constantly moving back and forth on stage. We are simultaneously overwhelmed by the sludgy power of riffs and enchanted by passages and solos of guitar of crystalline beauty. Just a half hour, yet really stunning.

After a last break in the fantastic atmosphere of Our Black Heart – the real heart of the festival, where musicians have their beer together with fans from all Europe – we move to Koko, venue of one of Desertfest stages just for the last day.

We enter this luxurious venue at 4:00 p.m. and we exit only at the end of the whole evening. Surrounded by red walls and golden-bronzed stucco, we go down into the stalls (getting more and more crowded!) waiting for Monolord live. Do you play doom? Well, this Swedish power trio plays doom in its purity! Quintessence of heaviness and slowness, their stoner-doom has got a psychedelic taste which sounds really groovy even in its being so massive and monolithic. Sounds are perfect – as it is Thomas Jäger voice (altered by reverbs and echoes it seems to come from another dimension) – and they enhance the beauty of the songs of both their two full-lenghts (Empress Rising and Vænir), together with fantastic videos on the back of the stage. If this band enchants on records, in the live dimension it definitely has got a leg up.

It almost seems impossible, but Koko gets even more crowded: Elder should have the same charm and power of attraction of Conan. We decide to go upstairs and we find a perfect box to enjoy the rest of the bands. If the American trio strikes for the progressive and psychedelic beauty of their melodies on recordings, live they really impressed us for the rock power of their songs. The impact and energy unleashed on stage are those of a great rock band. The mosh confirms this impression. If Nick Di Salvo voice needs a couple of songs to warm up and shine, musically the band is literally flawless and enthralling from the very first note. The complexity of their songs never dims the immediacy and groove of their music. The audience is thrilled and Elder get a tremendous amount of applause and ovations…all really deserved!

Then it is time for Trouble. Oldies but goodies: this could be the ultra-brief review of their amazing concert. Over 35 years of doom and not showing them at all. The historic pillars of the band from Chicago are the two veteran guitarists – Rick Wartell e Bruce Franklin – but of great impact is also the singer Kyle Thomas, with a perfect and powerful voice for the entire show and a really impressive oomph. Their doom metal is full of Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, thrash, NWOBHM and also a lot of 70s, and their setlist – including also some tracks of their latest album – is really exciting for us lovers of the more classically metal side of this genre. Unmissable!

Then the peak of the evening: Electric Wizard. Acknowledged as one of the most important names in doom metal, they are the worthy closing act of the “doom side” of the festival (while for the more industrial and experimental one the closing act is entrusted to Godflesh, simultaneously playing at the Electric Ballroom). 10 years from our first concert of the band headed by Jus Oborn and the impact and fascination of their live is unchanged. At the end of the second song sounds find their perfect balance and the power of their distortions overwhelms the whole Koko – and there are frequent bursts of mosh into the stalls. The setlist is focused on the dusty horror visions dominating their music from the times of Witchcult Today, yet there is still room for cosmic hallucinogen dilations. Jus Oborn voice is perfect and perfect is the classic pairing with outtakes from horror-creepy-esoteric movies. If new drummer Simon Poole does not have the devastating power of Mark Greening, yet his fluid touch makes even more subtle the dark atmospheres of the band. The final is an incredible version of Funeralopolis, devastating for its beauty and power and able to bring down the whole theatre. A great confirmation, a perfect ending for these three days of Desertfest!

Another last beer at the Underworld (where the closing party has started with its proper dj set) and…the countdown for the bill of the upcoming edition!
