All of Them Witches è il libro che Rosemary Woodhouse consulta per fugare ogni dubbio sulla natura dei suoi inquietanti vicini di casa. Un libro di stregoneria che sicuramente la band di Nashville, il cui nome è ispirato al suddetto testo maledetto, utilizza per evocare e poi essere posseduta dagli spiriti quando si esibisce dal vivo. Le leggende di chi aveva assistito ad un loro concerto (Deserfest Antwerp 2017) parlavano chiaro, e siamo qui riuniti stasera per averne conferma.

Anche gli Swedish Death Candy, in apertura di serata, manifestano qualche tipo di possessione, perché la loro musica, dal vivo, libera un’energia che su disco è invece molto più contenuta. Tra i divertenti riff stoner rock sgocciolano melodie psichedeliche dai colori dell’arcobaleno, succose come caramelle lisergiche. Un batterista che perde le bacchette un paio di volte a canzone ma senza mai abbassare il livello del tiro, dimostra quanto la precisione chirurgica (al contrario dell'energia!) abbia un’importanza relativa in questo genere. E l'energia non manca certamente alla band londinese, che dal vivo aumenta il tasso di Queens of the Stone Age e diminuisce quello di Black Angels. Bella scoperta!

Ma chi veramente si trasforma, rispetto a quanto fatto in studio, sono gli All Them Witches. Per quanto i loro dischi siano a dir poco straordinari, dal vivo il trio pare proprio posseduto dagli spiriti. Nessuno spirito maligno, però. Infatti anche nei momenti più umbratili e autunnali, il loro rock psichedelico è caldo, avvolgente, vibrante. In una parola: vivo. Gli spiriti tornati in vita stasera sono quelli dell’hard rock psichedelico degli anni '70 (la chitarra di Ben McLeod assume le sembianze di quella di Jimmy Page) e dell’alternative rock dei '90 (la voce profonda e stancamente cantilenante di Charles Michael Parks Jr odora di Morphine). Non ci troviamo però ad una seduta spiritica che si limita a risvegliare i morti, bensì ad una vera e propria rinascita dello spirito del rock, sotto nuove forme. Dopo un paio di brani di riscaldamento (la splendida Diamonds fatica un po’ ad aprirsi), il concerto decolla letteralmente. Il muro di suono sollevato dai tre è quanto di più imponente ci potremmo aspettare da una band stoner, così come la fantasia dei numerosi momenti improvvisati è una giungla di idee nella quale anche le migliori jam band si perderebbero, imbarazzate. Per non parlare del groove, costantemente presente anche nei momenti più soffusi o dilatati, dimostrando quanto il senso del ritmo sia innato in questi tre musicisti, anche quando si nascondono in una nebbia di rumori. Le leggende hanno trovato conferma: gli All Them Witches sono quanto di più vivo ed esaltante si possa trovare su un palco nel 2019. Sono la tangibile manifestazione dello spirito rock. Merito di un vecchio libro di magia nera?

All of Them Witches is the book that Rosemary Woodhouse consults to dispel any doubts about the nature of her disturbing neighbours. A book of witchcraft that surely the Nashville band, whose name is inspired by the mentioned cursed book, uses to evoke and then be possessed by spirits when performing live. The legends of those who attended their concert (Deserfest Antwerp 2017) spoke clearly, and we are gathered here tonight to confirm those stories.

Also Swedish Death Candy, openers of this evening, show some kind of possession, because their live music releases an energy that is much more contained on record. Among the amusing rock stoner riffs psychedelic melodies of rainbow colors, juicy like lysergic candies, are dripping. A drummer losing his drumsticks a couple of times per song - but without ever lowering the level of groove - shows how much surgical precision (unlike energy!) has got a relative importance in this musical genre. And the energy certainly does not lack to the London band, which in its show increases the rate of Queens of the Stone Age decreasing that of Black Angels. Great discovery!

But those who really transform themselves, compared to what they do in studio, are All Them Witches. Although their records are nothing short of extraordinary, live this trio seems to be possessed by spirits. No evil spirits though. In fact, even in the most shady and autumnal moments, their psychedelic rock is warm, enveloping, vibrant. In short: deep and lively. The spirits returned to life tonight are those of 70s psychedelic hard rock (Ben McLeod's guitar takes on the appearance of Jimmy Page's one) and 90s alternative rock (deep and wearily singsonging Charles Michael Parks Jr voice smells of Morphine). However, we are not at a seance that merely awakens the dead, but rather a real revival of the spirit of rock, in new forms. After a couple of warm-up songs (the amazing Diamonds struggles a bit to open itself), the concert literally takes off. The wall of sound raised by the three musicians is the most impressive we could expect from a stoner band, just as the creativity of the many improvised phrasings is a jungle of ideas in which even the best jamming bands would get lost and embarrassed. Not to mention the groove, constantly present even in the most suffused or dilated moments, proving how much the sense of rhythm is innate in this trio, even when they hide in a fog of noises. The legends have been confirmed: All Them Witches are the most lively and exciting band that can be found on a stage in 2019. They are the tangible manifestation of the spirit of rock. Merit of an old book of black magic?
