Questa volta non si tratta di una recensione. Perché non è proprio possibile “recensire” (nel senso più o meno stretto del termine) un evento che ci ha coinvolti in prima persona ancora di più che nella scorsa edizione. Quando passi la giornata dividendoti fra i molteplici ruoli di cui necessita una macchina complessa e articolata come quella di un festival, è impossibile catturare tutte quelle sfumature che di solito proviamo a trasmettere nei report dei concerti. È per questo che l’ho sottotitolato “diario di un evento”: perché queste righe sono un racconto personale – personalissimo – che vuol provare ad immortalare lo spirito che ha animato il III capitolo dello Stones From the Hill.

È stata una vera e propria grande festa. Questa volta non si trattava di un “generator party”, è vero, ma lo spirito era comunque quello. Essere con i piedi sulla sabbia, con il mare negli occhi, e con un tramonto che mano a mano tingeva tutto di rosso dando “l’illusione” del deserto, trasmetteva davvero la sensazione di esserci spostati nella California di (ormai!) una ventina di anni fa. 

Tutte le bands – tutte! – hanno contributo a far immergere il pubblico nell’atmosfera polverosa, un pò sfrenata, carichissima e potente dello stoner e delle sue molte anime: da quella più propriamente desert a quella più southern, passando anche attraverso le influenze hard rock e sludge. 

Del resto il pubblico è stato davvero numeroso (ricordiamoci che di secret show si tratta!) e appassionato: chi era su quella spiaggia, era lì perché voleva sentire quella musica e ascoltare quelle bands. Il rivedere molte delle facce presenti alla scorsa edizione, ed il conoscerne molte altre nuove, ha dato davvero la sensazione di una scena che si sta consolidando e – poco a poco – crescendo. E questo fa pensare che la crew si sta muovendo nella giusta direzione e che i molti sforzi sono ben canalizzati.

Quando poi uno come Nick Oliveri – che con i suoi Mondo Generator ha suonato davvero un grandissimo concerto, farcendolo anche con le canzoni di Kyuss e QOTSA – si aggira tranquillo per la spiaggia, rovistando lo stand dei vinili, parlando praticamente con chiunque, bevendo insieme a chiunque e facendo foto con chiunque…sembra proprio che ogni cosa stia girando nel verso giusto! E bersi un paio di shottini con lui e provare a spiegargli in inglese cos’è quel “sommergibile” che gli stai dando da bere…beh, non ha prezzo!

Ma tutto questo è possibile solo grazie ad un grande motore chiamato PASSIONE, che è ciò che Marco, Matteo, Giulio, Alessio e Mattia hanno infuso al loro progetto e che è condiviso da tutti quelli che fanno parte della crew. Passione che crea eventi come il concerto dei Mondo Generator, Mr. Bison, Varego, Geeah e Saat. Passione che diventa contagiosa perché la “famiglia” è un pò cresciuta e “qualcosa si muove” e sta davvero spuntando una scena intorno a tutto questo. L’entusiasmo è tanto. Talmente tanto che…un quarto capitolo è già in cantiere!

This time I can not talk of a live report. Indeed, it is not possible to "review" (in a more or less proper meaning of this word) an event that has involved us in person even more than in the last edition. When you spend the whole day making all the possible things that can be useful in such a complex machine as a festival, it is impossible to capture all the nuances that we usually try to fix in live reports. This is the reason why I subtitled it "diary of an event": because these words are a personal - extremely personal - account that tries to immortalize the spirit that animated this third chapter of Stones From the Hill.

It was a real big party. This time it was not a "generator party", this is true, but the spirit was still that one. With your feet on the sand, the sea in your eyes and the sunset gradually painting everything in red giving the "illusion" of the desert, you really got the sensation to be moved to the California of twenty years ago.

All the bands - all of them! - contributed to immerse the audience in the dusty, a bit wild, super-groovy and mighty atmosphere of stoner and its many souls: from the more strictly desert one to the more southern one, also passing through hard rock and sludge influences.

There was a very large (remember it was secret show!) and passionate audience: everyone on that beach was there because he wanted to listen to that music and to those bands. To see once again many of the faces met at the last edition, and to know many more new ones, really gave the feeling of a scene that is emerging and - gradually - growing. And this suggests that the crew is moving in the right direction and that the many efforts are well channeled.

And when someone like Nick Oliveri - who really played a great gig with his Mondo Generator, performing even songs of Kyuss and QOTSA - wanders around the beach, rummaging through the vinyls stand, talking with virtually anyone, drinking together with anyone and taking pictures with anyone... it definitely seems that everything is turning in the right way! Drinking a couple of shots with him and trying to explain in English what it is that "submarine" (the Italian word is "sommergibile" and it is used for a beer with a shot of rhum inside it) you are giving him to drink...well, it is priceless!

But all this is only possible thanks to a great engine called PASSION, which is what Matteo, Marco, Giulio, Alessio and Mattia have instilled in their project and which is shared by all those who are part of the crew. Passion that creates events such as the concert of Mondo Generator, Mr. Bison, Varego, Geeah and Saat. Passion that becomes contagious because "the family" has grown a bit and "something is moving" and a scene is popping up around this. There is a great enthusiasm. So much great that...a fourth chapter is already in the works!
