Il doom metal non è proprio il genere più dinamico in circolazione. Spossante lentezza, atmosfere sepolcrali, suoni schiaccianti e melodie funeree. Eppure, aggiungendo ai consolidati ingredienti del genere uno spiccato senso del groove, i Monolord propongono nuove prospettive, senza mai accelerare troppo la tradizionale processione funebre. I riff sono costruiti con il denso e pesante cemento delle distorsioni, ma possiedono elasticità grazie all'ottimo lavoro di Mika Häkki al basso e di Esben Willems alla batteria, capaci di rendere ipnotici i sei brani di Vænir. In questo secondo disco del trio svedese l'ipnosi è indotta anche dalla riverberatissima voce di Thomas Jäger, che disegna melodie che ricordano da vicino gli Electric Wizard più lisergici. Una musica che reinterpreta con personalità le diverse sfaccettature di un genere considerato erroneamente statico: dalla nebbia sepolcrale dei primi Black Sabbath all'energia dello stoner rallentato degli Sleep, per sfociare a tratti nella spiritualità dei Neurosis.

Doom metal is not exactly the most dynamic musical genre. Exhausting slowness, sepulchral atmospheres, crushing sounds and mournful melodies. Nevertheless, adding a strong sense of groove to the consolidate ingredients of the genre, Monolord offer new perspectives, yet without accelerating the typical funeral procession. Riffs are built with the dense heavy cement of distortions, but they are fluid and elastic thanks to the great work of Mika Häkki at the bass and Esben Willems at the drums, both of them capable of making hypnotic the six tracks of Vænir. In this second album of the Swedish trio hypnosis is also induced by the ultra-reverberated Thomas Jäger voice, drawing melodies reminiscent of the most lysergic Electric Wizard. A music which reinterprets with personality the different features of a genre usually - and wrongly - considered as static: from the sepulchral fog of the early Black Sabbath to the energy of the slowed down stoner of Sleep, at times giving rising to the spirituality of Neurosis.
