C’era proprio bisogno di un’altra band che suonasse come i primi Black Sabbath? La risposta è “sì” se questa band suona come i Beastmaker. Riprendendo immaginario, suoni e atmosfere del doom primigenio della band di Birmingham (e delle sue più dirette emanazioni, come ad esempio i Saint Vitus), questo gruppo californiano compone un ottimo disco di heavy metal polveroso. Sta all’ascoltatore decidere se tale polvere è sinonimo di vecchio e stantio (come un film horror di 50 anni fa, già visto mille volte e troppo lento per essere apprezzato nel nuovo millennio) oppure di misterioso e affascinante (come un film horror di 50 anni fa, che non invecchia mai ad ogni visione e che anzi guadagna sempre più fascino arcano proprio perché sempre più distante dalla realtà di tutti i giorni). Lusus Naturae è un disco costruito su riff dal groove trascinante (nonostante il loro incedere rallentato e pesante) - che non suonano mai “già sentiti” per quanto chiaramente incanalati nel genere di riferimento - intervallati a cupi arpeggi e acide melodie vocali (a metà tra il primo Ozzy, gli Alice in Chains e i Goatsnake). Un album esplicitamente ispirato all’immaginario occulto e horrorifico dei film di Mario Bava. Per tutti gli appassionati della polvere.

Did we really need another band reminiscent of the early Black Sabbath? the answer is "yes" if this band sounds like Beastmaker. Evoking the imagery, sounds and atmospheres of the doom of the band from Birmingham (and of its more direct descendants such as Saint Vitus), this Californian band releases a great album of dusty heavy metal. It is up to the listener to decide whether this "dust" is synonymous of old and musty (like a 50 years old horror movie, watched too many times and too slow to be appreciated in these days) or it is instead synonymous of misterious and fascinating (like a 50 years old horror movie which does not get older with viewings and that on the contrary grows in arcane charm exactly because it is more and more distant from everyday reality). Lusus Naturae is an album built on enthralling groovy riffs (in spite of their heavy slowed down gait) - which never sound obvious or boring even though clearly part of their inspirational genre - alternating with gloomy arpeggios and acid vocal lines (halfway between the early Ozzy, Alice In Chains and Goatsnake). An album explicitly inspired by the occult horror images of Mario Bava movies. For all "dust" lovers.
