La spinta contestatrice del rock, da sempre basata sulla capacità di aggregazione sociale di questa genere, è ormai data per morta. In un periodo storico in cui spesso la musica alternativa cerca la via dell’intrattenimento senza prendersi troppo sul serio (oppure si rifugia nella fantasia, nell’esoterismo o in un’intimità ai limiti dell’esistenzialismo o dell’individualismo) l’esordio degli Algiers ha un impatto dirompente. Il trio originario di Atlanta (ma attualmente distribuito tra New York e Londra) reclama attenzione nei confronti dei problemi di integrazione delle minoranze, in particolare riferendosi alla comunità nera americana (tema per niente superato visti i continui conflitti tra questa e le istituzioni di polizia). Per farlo intreccia le radici nere del gospel con il rumoroso post punk bianco, l’attitudine del blues con le atmosfere dell’elettronica industriale, scrivendo una rabbiosa storia degli Stati Uniti, dalle sue origini di segregazione razziale all’attuale - irrisolta! - conflittualità. Un ibrido dalla forte personalità, in cui convivono diverse etnie e sensibilità. Gelide sferragliate noise di chitarra, atmosfere plumbee e ritmiche trip hop si intrecciano a caldissime armonie vocali dal sapore soul. Non c’è l’illusione di innescare una rivoluzione culturale, tanto meno viene offerta una possibilità di risoluzione dei conflitti: ma la convivenza armonica di mondi apparentemente così distanti offre di per sé una speranza. Oltre ad offrire la speranza che il rock torni ad avere un impatto sulla società e sulla realtà, come "ai tempi d'oro". Senza dubbio questo disco possiede tutte le qualità per poter rappresentare un "nuovo inizio".

The rebellious push of rock, intrisic to the social aggregating ability of this musical genre, is now taken for dead. In a historical period in which alternative music often seeks entertainment without taking itself too seriously (or on the contrary it takes refuge in fantasy, esotericism or in an intimacy near to existentialism and individualism) the debut of Algiers has got a disruptive impact. Born in Atlanta (now based between New York and London), this trio claims attention to the integration problems between minorities, with special attention to the African-American community (current issue, in light of the continuous conflicts between this last and Police Institutions). In doing this, they interweave the black roots of gospel with the noisy white post punk, the blues attitude with the industrial electronic atmospheres, writing a rabid history of the US, from its origins of racial segregation to the current - unresolved! - conflictuality. A hybrid with a strong personality, in which various ethnic groups and different sensitivities live side by side. Cold noise guitar rattlings, oppressive atmospheres and trip hop rhythms are intertwined with soul-tasted warm vocal harmonies. No illusion of giving rise to a cultural revolution, nor the offering of a chance of conflicts resolution: yet the harmonic coexistence of apparently so distant worlds gives hope in itself.  As well as giving the hope that rock may once again have an impact on society and reality as in its heyday.  No doubt this album has got all the qualities to be a "new beginning."
