Quando il palcoscenico è un pratone in un angolo remoto della Val Passiria, accanto ad un torrente, circondato da stupende montagne e pareti rocciose puntinate di climbers, il nuovo festival ai confini dell'Italia nasce già sotto una buona stella.

Questo è il secondo giorno, ad ingresso gratuito, ed il mood dell'odierno cartellone è intriso di psichedelia.

Arriviamo mentre salgono sul palco i Black is? Just a dark White. Una marea stoner e psichedelica riempe subito l'ampio prato di fronte al palco, e non si può far altro che ondeggiare immersi nei crescendo tutti strumentali della band altoatesina. Davvero un ottimo inizio.

Seguono i Juleah, ma li ascoltiamo con mezzo orecchio, perché vogliamo perlustrare la venue in cui ci troviamo. Bellissima la collinetta davanti al palco, attrezzata con presse di fieno a mò di panche e maxi-sdraio fatte con pancali colorati. Il bosco è a un passo da noi, ed il ghiacciaio ci scruta dall'alto. Che spettacolo!

Torniamo sulla terra e sul pianeta musica con i Blitz Pop. Tanta, tantissima energia da parte di questo giovanissimo quartetto e - soprattutto - da parte della inarrestabile front-girl. Un alternative rock che a volte strizza l'occhio al punk, altre a certo stoner diretto e ballerino. Perfetti per accendere tutti i presenti.

Cambio drastico con i Les Lekin. E' il momento della psichedelia nella sua accezione più heavy e space. Sono sicuramente la sorpresa più interessante della giornata ed il loro live è davvero coinvolgente, al punto che quando - purtroppo! - inizia a scendere la pioggia, una nutrita parte del pubblico non corre a rifugiarsi sotto le tende dei chioschi della birra, ma continua a fluttuare sui fraseggi tutti strumentali del trio di Salisburgo. Si respira un'atmosfera davvero intensa, piacevole e libera, sospesa nel caleidoscopio di colori e luci del tempo meteorologico che continua le sue metamorfosi. I Les Lekin ne sono la perfetta colonna sonora.

Passata la pioggia d'acqua è il momento della pioggia di macigni con i Deadsmoke. Da tanto tempo volevo sentirli dal vivo, e son dovuta arrivare fin sopra a casa loro per riuscirci. Pesanti e monolitici, sembrano risuonare dal profondo della montagna. Ogni riff è un masso che dapprima rotola lentamente ed infine ti si posa sopra e ti schiaccia e non ti resta che perderti nel sottosuolo, vagando nel tunnel psych in cui vieni infilato dalle loro sapienti mani. Il loro impatto live è molto più massiccio e visionario di quanto non lo sia quello su disco. Provare per credere!

Dalla Francia i Libido Fuzz tornano a pestare il pedale della psichedelia, questa volta a tinte blues e con un bel carico di groove, che ci fa muovere e riscaldare ora che è scesa la notte e i 1.600 mslm iniziano a farsi sentire anche se siamo a fine luglio. Energico e ricco di tiro, il trio francese coinvolge costantemente il pubblico e convince, nonostante la batteria risulti a volte un pò frenata rispetto a basso e chitarra, che snocciolano con fluidità un riff dopo l'altro.

Infine The Atomic Bitchwax. Un classico intro floydiano, e poi tutta la potenza stoner e hard rock del trio americano. E ora che anche alla chitarra abbiamo "un Monster Magnet" (Garrett Sweeny si è infatti recentemente unito alla storica sezione ritmica costituita da Chris Kosnik e Bob Pantella), bordate heavy e riff carichi di groove sono ancor più all'ordine del giorno. Una scaletta serrata e non un attimo di quiete. Il loro set corre via in un attimo: ci si ritrova alla fine del concerto e dell'intera giornata di festival in un attimo, senza nemmeno sapere come ci siamo arrivati. Il bis è nuovamente floydiano: una fantastica One of These Days versione stoner, ad alto contenuto di bassi e potenza. 

Riassunto della giornata? Il Crystal Mountain è un esperimento riuscito, che ha unito bands emergenti, nomi già noti dell'attuale scena heavy psych e un headliner di prim'ordine, riuscendo a portare un buon numero di spettatori fra i monti di un'area tutt'altro che facilmente raggiungibile del nostro stivale. L'augurio è che questa sia stata l'edizione n. 1 di un festival che ritroveremo la prossima estate, magari con un bill ancora più nutrito ed un pubblico più numeroso.

When the stage is a wide meadow in a remote corner of Val Passiria, next to a stream, surrounded by beautiful mountains and rocky cliffs dotted with climbers, the new festival on the borders of Italy is already born under a good star.

This is the second day (free entry) and the mood of today's billboard is full of psychedelia.

We arrive while Black is? Just a dark White are getting on stage. A stoner psychedelic tide immediately fill the large lawn in front of the stage, and you cannot help but sway immersed in the all instrumental crescendo of the South Tyrol band. A really good start.

Then Juleah, but we listen to them with half a ear, because we want to explore the venue. The tiny hill in front of the stage is beautiful, equipped with hay presses like benches and maxi-deck chairs made with coloured pallets. The wood is one step away from us, and the glacier observes us from above. What a show!

Let's go back to Earth and on to planet Music with Blitz Pop. So much energy from this young quartet and - above all - from the unstoppable front-girl. Alternative rock that sometimes winks at punk, others at some direct danceable stoner. Perfect to turn on all present.

Drastic change with Les Lekin. It is the moment of psychedelia in its most heavy space form. They are certainly the most interesting surprise of the day and their live is really addictive, to the point that when - unfortunately! - the rain begins to fall, a large part of the audience does not run to take refuge under the tents of the beer stalls, yet continues to fluctuate on the instrumental phrasings of the Salzburg trio. There is a really intense, pleasant and free atmosphere, suspended in the kaleidoscope of colours and lights of the weather continuing its metamorphosis. Les Lekin are the perfect soundtrack.

After the rain of water it is the moment for the rain of boulders with Deadsmoke. I longed to hear them live for a long time, and I had to get up to their house to do it. Heavy and monolithic, they seem to resonate from the depths of the mountain. Each riff is a boulder that first rolls slowly and in the end it rests on you, crushing you, and you just have to get lost in the subsoil, wandering in the psych tunnel where you are stuffed by their expert hands. Their live impact is much more massive and visionary than it is on album. Seeing is believing!

From France, Libido Fuzz step on the psychedelic pedal again, this time in bluesy groovy shades, which makes us move and warm up now that the night has fallen and the 1,600 above sea-level begin to be felt even if we are at the end of July. Powerful and rich in groove, the French trio constantly involves and seizes the audience, despite drums are sometimes a bit "braked" compared to bass and guitar, which smoothly melt a riff after another.

In the end The Atomic Bitchwax. A classic Pink Floyd intro, and then all the stoner and hard rock power of the American trio. And now that we have a "Monster Magnet" on the guitar too (Garrett Sweeny has in fact recently joined the historical rhythm section consisting of Chris Kosnik and Bob Pantella), there is even more plenty of heavy assaults and super-groovy riffs. A tight setlist and not a moment of quiet. Their set runs off in a moment: in a moment we find ourselves at the end of the concert and of the entire festival day, without even knowing how we got there. The encore is again from Pink Floyd archives: a fantastic stoner version of One of These Days, with a high level of bassess and power.

Summary of the day? Crystal Mountain is a successful experiment, which has joined emerging bands, well-known names of the current heavy psych scene and a headliner of first order, managing to bring a good number of spectators among the mountains of an area of our Italian boot far from easily accessible. The wish is that this was the edition n. 1 of a festival that we will find next summer, perhaps with a even more yummy bill and a larger audience.
