Niente di superfluo, tutto è essenziale. Questo è il pensiero che pian piano si faceva strada nella mia testa durante le 2 ore e 30 minuti di concerto dei Motorpsycho. E non è considerazione da poco. Soprattutto se si tiene conto di tutta la pubblicità ultra-positiva che aveva anticipato questo evento. Tutti - nessuno escluso! - mi prospettavano un concerto clamoroso ed imperdibile, un live senza eguali. Il rischio della delusione era quindi lì ad un passo: facile rimanere non pienamente appagati dopo una così entusiastica preparazione. Invece no. Tutto quello che mi era stato detto ha trovato esatta corrispondenza in una esibizione che ha confermato tutti i giudizi positivi e - da un punto di vista strettamente personale ed emotivo - li ha anche superati.

Più che un concerto, un'esperienza. Abituata a bands che di solito suonano non più di un'ora, un'ora e mezza, è davvero incredibile trovarsi di fronte ad una formazione che sciorina un set che dura quasi il doppio del tempo e che in nessun momento soffre di cali di intensità. Si arriva alla fine della lunga scaletta senza quasi essersi resi conto di essere rimasti impalati per tutta la sua durata con gli occhi fissi sul palco e le orecchie tese verso ogni singola nota. In questo lasso di tempo una moltitudine di sensazioni ci hanno attraversato e - nel mio caso - esaltato. Si passa da composizioni che sembrano quasi delle colonne sonore, a canzoni che sono trascinanti e potenti come solo certi pezzi intrisi di hard rock psichedelico sanno essere. Ci sono dei crescendo che superano la bellezza di certo post-rock alla GY!BE, e delle dilatazioni che vanno a bussare alla porta del Re Cremisi. Tutto questo grazie all'incredibile bravura - tecnica, ma anche espressiva - di tre musicisti norvegesi (coadiuvati da un bravissimo turnista che si divide fra tastiere, tromba, chitarra e cori) come se ne trovano pochi in giro.

La scaletta si sofferma ampiamente - e giustamente - sul fresco di uscita The Tower. Ma con una ventina di album all'attivo, la band di Trondheim non ha che l'imbarazzo della scelta, e spazia su e giù per quasi trent'anni di storia, pescando pezzi anche dai dischi degli anni '90. E - come nel concerto cui ho assistito esattamente la settimana prima (Paradise Lost, anche loro band ormai trentenne!) - la cosa sorprendente è la perfezione degli incastri fra passato e presente, fra l'infanzia della band e la sua piena maturità, passando per tutte le sue fasi evolutive. Tutto questo con una varietà di sonorità, generi e soluzioni davvero impressionante e che conta pochi concorrenti.

Questo è stato il mio primo (!!!) concerto dei Motorpsycho. Adesso non vedo l'ora di sentirli nuovamente dal vivo!

Nothing superfluous, everything is essential. This is the thought that slowly got way in my head during the 2 hour and 30 minutes Motorpsycho concert. And this is not of little significance. Especially if you think of all the ultra-positive advertising that had anticipated this event. Everyone - none excluded! - talked about an impressive unforgettable concert, a matchless live. The risk of disappointment was therefore one step away: easy to remain unfulfilled after such an enthusiastic preparation. Absolutely not, instead. All I was told found exact correspondence in a performance that confirmed all the positive judgments and - from a strictly personal and emotional point of view - also overcame them.

More than a concert, an experience. Accustomed to bands usually playing no more than an hour, an hour and a half, it's really amazing to be faced with a trio that shows off a set that lasts nearly twice the time and that never suffers from falls of intensity. You reach the end of the long setlist without ever having realized that you remained wonderstruck for its whole duration with eyes fixed on the stage and ears stretched towards each single note. In this timespan a multitude of sensations have crossed and - in my case - exalted the audience. They range from musical compositions that seem almost like soundtracks, to songs that are as powerful and enthralling as only some pieces of psychedelic hard rock are. There are crescendo that surpass the beauty of that post-rock à la GY! BE, and dilatations knocking on the door of the Crimson King. All this thanks to the incredible - technical, but also expressive - skill of three Norwegian musicians (assisted by a great session man on keyboards, trumpet, guitar and choirs) as you will rarely find around.

The setlist largely - and rightly - focuses on the brand new The Tower. But with about twenty albums, the band from Trondheim is spoilt for choice, and it spans up and down almost thirty years of history, picking also from 90s records. And - as in the concert of exactly the week before (Paradise Lost, even them a thirty-year-old band!) - the amazing thing is the perfect mix of past and present, of the childhood of the band and its full maturity, through all its evolutionary phases. All this with a variety of sound, genres and solutions that is really impressive and counts few competitors.

This was my first (!!!) Motorpsycho concert. Now I cannot wait to hear them live again!
