Unearthly Trance – Stalking the Ghost

“Lo sludge ha esaurito la sua spinta e non ha più niente da offrire. Ormai è diventato una caricatura di ciò che era in origine, e sopravvive solo per moda. Tutti questi gruppi che fanno a gara a chi ha il suono più grasso, il feedback più fastidioso, la corde vocali maggiormente foderate di catarro hanno rotto i coglioni!” Tutto vero, per carità. Poi metto nello stereo Stalking the Ghost e ci casco nuovamente. Mi ritrovo esaltato a scapellare in giro per casa, tanta è l’intensità che esplode dalle casse. È più forte di me. Perché se con il suo sesto disco il gruppo di New York non apporta particolari novità ad un genere ultimamente sovraffollato, è indubbiamente vero che fa rizzare i peli sul collo da quanto trasuda groove e sporcizia. Come se gli Eyehategod si disintossicassero dall’eroina con tonnellate di marijuana gentilmente offerta dagli Electric Wizard. Come se i Neurosis, tra una visione mistica ed un’esperienza extracorporea, vedessero per qualche attimo quanto fa schifo la realtà, su suggerimento dei primissimi Machine Head. I riff degli Unearthly Trance non basano tutta la loro essenza esclusivamente sui suoni mastodontici (per quanto questi lo siano), ma anche e soprattuto sull’energia, il tiro – rallentato – e l’atmosfera – cupa e allucinata. Pubblicato a sette anni di distanza dal lavoro precedente (tempo impiegato dalla band per concepire 2 dischi a nome Serpentine Path inglobando nella formazione l’ex Electric Wizard Tim Bagshaw), Stalking the Ghost spicca nell’oceano fangoso dello sludge metal perché diretto e coinvolgente, grazie a canzoni con una gran botta, una notevole dose di cattiveria e perversione, ma anche melodie immediate (e non scontate!). Eh sì, ci sono cascato di nuovo! Un altro disco sludge che dimostra che il genere è tutt’altro che morto.

“Sludge has exhausted its thrust and has nothing more to offer. It has now become a caricature of what it originally was, and it survives only because of the hype. All these bands who compete to have the fattest sound, the most annoying feedback, the more catarrh-covered vocal cords, they have now fed up everybody!" It’s all true, no doubt. Then I put in the stereo Stalking the Ghost and I find myself headbanging like a teenager so great it is the intensity exploding out of the speakers. I cannot resist. Because if with its sixth album the New York band does not add anything new to a recently overcrowded genre, it is undoubtedly true that it raises the hairs on the neck so much it exudes groove and filth. As if Eyehategod were cleansing themselves of their heroin drug addiction with tons of marijuana kindly offered by Electric Wizard. As if Neurosis, between a mystical vision and an extracorporeal experience, would see for a few moment how disgusting reality is, on suggestion of the early Machine Head. Unearthly Trance riffs do not rely entirely on mammoth sounds (as far as they are so), yet and mostly on energy, (slowed) groove and (gloomy and hallucinated) atmosphere. Released seven years  after their last work (time for the band to conceive 2 albums as Serpentine Path incorporating former Electric Wizard Tim Bagshaw in the band), Stalking the Ghost stands out in the sludge metal muddy ocean because it is direct and engaging, thanks to songs with a great groove, a considerable amount of malice and perversion, and immediate (yet not banal) melodies. Oh yes, I did it again! Another sludge album that proves that the genre is far from dead.
