Non si può non voler bene ai Deville, una band che ti fa tornare sedicenne. I primi tentativi di suonare la chitarra e di farsi allungare i capelli, la camicia di flanella indossata anche a letto, i dischi ascoltati a ripetizione e conosciuti a memoria… la band svedese ha il potere di risvegliare l’adolescente che c’è in me! Un adolescente che si sparava The Colour and the Shape a tutto volume, tra un disco grunge e l'altro. Diretto, immediato, divertente, melodicamente accattivante e con un gran tiro. Il disco dei Foo Fighters spezzava la depressione che continuamente imperversava nel mio stereo. Così come la band di Dave Grohl fu in grado di creare un bellissimo disco di pop rock partendo dal retroterra grunge e punk, i Deville fanno la stessa cosa da una base stoner ed heavy metal. I riff serrati e pesanti sono metallo puro, ma i suoni pieni e fuzzosi, così come il tiro travolgente, sono quelli tipici dello stoner degli ultimi anni (non a caso hanno diviso il palco con Torche, Red Fang e Truckfighters). L'album degli svedesi ha tutti i pregi di quello che divoravo nel 1997, o almeno tutti quelli dei suoi pezzi più tirati. Canzoni cariche a mille (nessuna traccia di ballata), compatte e determinate ma che mai rinunciano al groove di un bel riff rotondo. Ganci melodici a profusione, che rapiscono grazie ad una sensibilità mai banale o scontata (infatti c'è spesso un sottile velo di dissonanza nelle linee vocali). Dopo The Colour and the Shape non ho più inserito nello stereo un disco dei Foo Fighters. Ma non è mai svanita la mia adolescenza. Se ne sta assopita in un angolo, aspettando i dischi giusti. I Deville hanno scritto uno di questi dischi.

It is impossible not to love Deville, a band that takes you back to your sixteen. The first attempts to play the guitar and get long hair, the flannel shirt worn also under the bed sheets, albums you listened a million times knowning them by heart ... the Swedish band has the power to awaken the teenager in me! A teenager who listened to The Colour and the Shape at full volume, among a lot of grunge albums. Direct, immediate, entertaining, melodically appealing and with a great groove. The Foo Fighters album used to break the depression constantly raging in my stereo. As well as Dave Grohl band was able to create a beautiful pop rock album starting from a grunge punk background, the Deville one does the same thing from a stoner heavy metal start point. Their heavy riffs are pure metal, but their fuzz sound, as well as the overwhelming groove, is typical of modern stoner rock (indeed they have been sharing the stage with Torche, Red Fang and Truckfighters). The Swedes album has got all the qualities of that one I devoured in 1997, or at least those of its more vigorous parts. Groovy, compact, determined songs (no ballads at all) that never give up the groove of an effective riff. Plenty of melodic hooks conquering the listener thanks to a never banal or obvious sensitivity (indeed there is often a thin layer of dissonance in the vocal lines). After The Colour and the Shape no Foo Fighters album entered my stereo anymore. Yet my adolescence is never gone. It is just asleep in a corner, waiting for the right albums. Deville have written one of those albums.
