Ritorno a MusicaW dopo un bel po’ di anni di assenza perché questo fantastico festival (ben organizzato, in una location molto bella, a ingresso gratuito e con band di prim’ordine) si svolge nei giorni centrali di agosto che sono quelli che solitamente mi spettano come ferie estive e che mi portano quindi lontano dalle mie zone.  Ma quest’anno, visti i nomi coinvolti, non posso (almeno in parte!) mancare!

Nel piccolo ma affascinante teatro immerso nel verde parco comunale di Castellina Marittima, sono i leccesi Dust Storm Warning ad inaugurare la serata. Il loro stoner-blues è divertente, ben suonato, valorizzato da una batteria potente e precisa e da una voce ruvida e calda, classicamente hard rock. Forse manca loro un po’ di “botta” dell’accoppiata basso-chitarra, ma gli ingredienti sono quelli giusti.

Gli “Operazione Intergalattica Spaziale!” sono un trio dedito ad un funky carico di distorsioni pesanti, che miscela groove molleggiato e stoner rock robusto. Molto compatti e dinamici, hanno il loro punto di forza nell’elastica accoppiata basso/batteria. La chitarra manca leggermente di fluidità, ma nel complesso sono una scoperta molto interessante, da approfondire.

A differenza del concerto di Calenzano di qualche mese fa, stasera i Karl Marx was a Broker si presentano con la formazione completa e la differenza è davvero notevole. Se erano stati convincenti anche in occasione del concerto fiorentino, oggi suonano davvero esaltanti. Il loro math rock di stampo progressivo è poderoso e trascinante e guadagna fascino grazie alle atmosfere spaziali delle melodie, cui contribuiscono in maniera fondamentale i samples e i video proiettati. La sensazione è quella di trovarsi dentro ad uno space rock metallico. Se Anesthetize dei Porcupine Tree è una delle vostre canzoni preferite (come lo è per me!), la musica dei KMWAB è una vera goduria! 

Infine Mutoid Man. Ho già assistito ad un loro concerto e quindi sono preparato a quello che mi troverò davanti: tre “folli” che si divertono a suonare a tutta velocità, inanellando ritmiche thrash metal, melodie da gruppo heavy old school e frenesia post hardcore. Un’ora di spettacolo - e non solo musicale! Sembra di assistere ad una puntata di Beavis & Butthead in cui la musica pesante viene al tempo stesso omaggiata e sfottuta, tra esaltazione adolescenziale e risate. Oltre ai pezzi dei due album ad oggi pubblicati (Helium Head e Bleeder), la band lascia spazio ad alcuni brani inediti - folli e incontenibili come il resto della loro produzione - e allo “stravolgimento” di un paio di classici tutt’altro che “heavy” (Don’t let me be Misunderstood e Purple Rain). Rivedere Ben Koller ad una settimana di distanza dal concerto dei Converge è un piacere: potentissimo, preciso, con un tiro e una fantasia micidiali, si conferma un batterista versatile e (per me!) il punto di forza dei Mutoid Man. Se l’ultra-effettata chitarra di Stephen Brodsky, per la natura stessa del suo suono, viene un po’ troppo divorata dal basso distorto di Nick Cageao, il risultato è comunque un uragano di energia, come dimostra lo scatenato pubblico. Ci sono gruppi che dal vivo ti fanno divertire come un matto, indipendentemente dalla qualità dei suoni o dalla perfetta esecuzione delle canzoni. I Mutoid Man fanno sicuramente parte di questa categoria.

I return to MusicaW after some years of absence because this amazing festival (well organized, fantastic location, free entry and great bands) takes place in mid-August, exactly in those days I usually am on vacation, far away from my areas. Considered the bands playing in this edition, this year I cannot (at least partially!) miss it!

Dust Storm Warning (from Lecce) usher in the evening on the stage of the small, yet extremely fascinating, theatre in the green municipal park of Castellina Marittima. Their stoner-blues is entertaining, enhanced by powerful precise drums and by a typically hard rock warm rough voice. Maybe they need to improve something in the couple bass/guitar, but the right ingredients are all there.

“Operazione Intergalattica Spaziale!” are a trio involved in a heavy distorted funky, mixing together bouncing groove and tough stoner rock. Compact and dynamic, they have their strenght in the elastic couple bass/drums. Guitar lacks a bit of fluidity, but all in all they are an interesting discover, to be deepened. 

Unlike the concert in Calenzano a few months ago, tonight Karl Marx was a Broker play with their complete lineup and the difference is truly remarkable. If they were convincing in that concert, tonight they are really exciting. Their progish math rock is powerful and compelling and it gains in fascination thanks to the space atmospheres of the melodies, to which samples and videos contribute in fundamental way. The feeling is that of being inside a metal space rock. If Porcupine Tree Anesthetize is one of your favourite songs (as it is for me!), KMWAB music is pure pleasure!

Finally Mutoid Man. I have already attended one of their concerts and so I am ready to what I will find on stage: three “crazy” guys who enjoy playing at full speed, notching up thrash metal rhythms, heavy old school band melodies and post hardcore fury. One hour show – and not just music! It seems to watch a Beavis & Butthead episode where heavy music is at the same time honored and teased, with adolescent exaltation and laughters. In addition to the songs of the two albums released to date (Helium Head and Bleeder), tonight they play also some unreleased pieces - crazy and uncontainable as the rest of their production – and the “cover” of a couple of not properly “heavy” hits (Don’t let me be Misunderstood and Purple Rain). Listen to Ben Koller after only a week from Converge gig is something amazing: super-powerful, hyper-precise, with killing groove and fantasy, he is a truly versatile drummer and (to me!) the added value in Mutoid Man. Because of the nature of its sound, Stephen Brodsky ultra-distorted guitar is a bit too devoured by Nick Cageao distorted bass: yet the final result is nonetheless a hurricane of energy, as well showed by the wild audience. There are bands with the incredible ability of entertaining you regardless of the quality of sounds or the perfect execution of songs. Mutoid Man are certainly part of this category.
