Black Rainbows – Stellar Prophecy

A un anno dall’uscita di Hawkdope, i Black Rainbows sorprendono con la pubblicazione di Stellar Prophecy. Non solo per l’uscita così ravvicinata rispetto al suo predecessore (ed è inoltre da sottolineare il fatto che siano stati entrambi registrati nell’estate 2014), ma anche perché forse il nuovo album riesce perfino a spingersi ancora un passo oltre. Intatta la potenza ed il tiro distintivi del trio romano, Stellar Prophecy cala sul tavolo da gioco alcune nuove carte vincenti. Prima fra tutte la spinta sull’acceleratore delle sonorità settantiane. E quando in un pezzo come Woman ti ritrovi nelle orecchie il suono dell’hammond, capisci che ti stai avventurando anche nei territori di certo hard rock targato “70”.  Se poi a ruota ci sono i quasi 12 minuti di puro space rock di Golden Widow, è evidente che la posta in gioco è davvero alta: o sei di fronte ad un baro, o il giocatore che hai davanti ha davvero una grande mano di carte. E non c’è dubbio che la risposta è la seconda. Incredibilmente riuscito è infatti l’equilibrio di immediatezza e groove da un lato, e di aperture lisergiche e space dall’altro. Basti pensare all’alfa-omega costituito dalla opener Electrify – fuzzosa, tiratissima, perfetta intro stoner/hard rock – e dalla conclusiva Travel (quasi una Part 2 di Golden Widow) – viaggio cosmico, spersi in spazi siderali, in loops di soundscapes onirici e psichedelici. Se dietro a tutto questo c’è la maturità e l’affiatamento di un grande power trio, è al tempo stesso innegabile il ruolo di primo piano di Gabriele Fiori: i Black Rainbows sono la sua creatura musicale, sempre più caratterizzata dalla sua chitarra (i suoi riffs e i suoi assoli sono ad un tempo il centro e l’intelaiatura di tutte le canzoni) e dalla sua voce - effettatissima, allucinata/allucinante, sospesa in una bolla straniante. Il tutto racchiuso dallo stupendo artwork di SoloMacello.

Just one year after the release of Hawkdope and Black Rainbows surprise their fans with the release of the brand new Stellar Prophecy. A surprise not only because of the extremely short lapse of time between the two albums (and it has to be stressed the fact that they were both recorded during summer 2014), but also because maybe the new full-length goes even beyond its predecessor. Intact the might and groove typical of the trio from Rome, Stellar Prophecy plays new winning cards on the playing board. First of all the push on the accelerator of 70s sounds. And when listening to Woman you get in touch with hammond chords, you realize that you are venturing in the lands of certain branded “70s” hard rock. Considering the following 12 minutes of pure space rock of Golden Widow, it is clear that you are in front of high stakes. There are only two possibilities: you are facing a cheater or you are in front of a player with a great hand. No doubt that the answer is the second one. The balance between immediacy and groove on a side, and space lysergic openings on the other, is really successful. Only think about the alpha-omega of the opener Electrify – fuzzy, direct, perfect stoner/hard rock intro – and the final Travel (almost a Part 2 of Golden Widow) – a cosmic trip, lost in the outer space, in loops of oneiric psychedelic soundscapes. If behind all this there is the maturity and cohesion of a great power trio, at the same time it is undeniable the leading role of Gabriele Fiori: Black Rainbows are his musical creature and they are increasingly characterized by his guitar (his riffs and solos are both the center and the framework of all songs) and his voice – super-distorted, hallucinated/hallucinating, suspended in an alienating bubble.
