Isaak – Sermonize

Lo ammetto: sono un nostalgico della musica alternativa degli anni 90. Soprattutto della voce di quei cantanti in grado di strapparti qualcosa da dentro, per poi sbattertelo in faccia. Ma anche di riff pesanti, carichi di groove e privi di qualsiasi pomposità. Per non parlare delle melodie: un po’ acide e sghembe. Comunque immediate - nel senso buono del termine! Sono un nostalgico che però non digerisce i gruppi “conservatori”. Per tutte queste ragioni, Sermonize - nuovo disco degli Isaak - è un grande album. Infatti, pur risvegliando sonorità del vecchio millennio, le reinterpreta alla luce dei suoni del nuovo. La band genovese (ex – Gandhi’s Gunn) non scimmiotta lo stoner o il metal alternativo ai quali si ispira (e con metal alternativo intendo Tool, Faith no More, Helmet, Soundgarden… niente nu-metal!). Gli Isaak hanno personalità e lo dimostrano con un disco potente, adrenalinico, divertente, con sonorità moderne (i muri sonori dei Torche e le bordate metalliche dei Red Fang) e che perfettamente rinnova le idee scaturite nell’ultimo decennio del vecchio millennio (soprattutto, il lato stoner più grasso e massiccio). A partire dalla calda e potente voce di Giacomo Boeddu, Sermonize possiede tutte le caratteristiche che ogni appassionato dei 90 possa desiderare, se ha la mentalità abbastanza aperta da rendersi conto che quelle caratteristiche sono ancora più esaltanti se rese attuali. E, cosa ancora più importante, è fatto di canzoni dirette, cariche e che ti entrano dentro.

Isaak – Sermonize

I confess it: I am a nostalgic of 90s alternative music. Especially of the voice of those singers able to snatch something out of your deepest inside and then throw it right on your face. But I am also nostalgic of heavy riffs: groovy and free of any pomposity. And what about melodies? Acid and crooked, but always immediate - in the good sense of the word! Anyway, I am a nostalgic who totally dislike "conservative" bands. For all these reasons, Sermonize - Isaak's latest release - is a great album. Even though it awakens sounds of the last millennium, it reinterprets them in the light of those of the new one. The band from Genova (formerly Gandhi’s Gunn) does not ape stoner or alternative metal (and by "alternative metal" I mean Tool, Faith no More, Helmet, Soundgarden…no nu-metal at all!): these are simply inspirations. Isaak have got their own personality and they show it with a mighty, adrenalic, funny album which sounds modern (let's think of Torche's walls of sound and Red Fang's metal strokes) and perfectly renews the ideas blossomed in the last decade of the old millennium (above all, the fattest and massive stoner side). Simply thinking of the expressive, powerful Giacomo Boeddu's voice, it is immediately clear that Sermonize has got all the features dear to a 90s fan: a 90s enthusiast who is openminded enough to realize that those features are even more exciting if up-to-date. And - even more important - it is an album made of direct, vibrant songs which get right inside of you.
