Duel + Geeah – 01.04.2016 – Teatro Niccolini (Castellina Marittima – PI)

Sperduta nelle più remote colline pisane (praticamente sei nell’entroterra della costa livornese!) Castellina Marittima è il luogo rock per eccellenza dell’afoso agosto toscano. La sua versione invernale mi mancava…e adesso ho – con soddisfazione! – colmato questa lacuna.

Surriscaldano la già calda serata del Teatro Niccolini i livornesi Geeah. Di recente formazione, i quattro propongono uno stoner rock diretto figlio dei Kyuss, che ha però in sé anche una buona vena più metal, che riporta alla mente i Corrosion of Conformity, e dà alle loro canzoni un bonus di pesantezza e tiro. Indubbio punto di forza la voce: grintosa e potente dalla prima all’ultima nota. L’acustica del locale non è perfetta e tende un po’ ad impastare i suoni a causa di una leggera eco, ma con il procedere della scaletta si raggiunge un buon equilibrio e si riesce ad apprezzare non solo il tiro di basso e chitarra, ma anche la qualità dei loro riffs. …si dice che il progetto sia nato quasi per gioco: io continuerei a giocare così allora!

E poi, dal Texas (e ti chiedi davvero some abbiano fatto ad arrivare in questa bella – e sperduta – campagna!), i Duel. L’attacco è un muro di suono, innalzato da un basso e da una batteria che procedono a marce serrate, e fortificato da due chitarre che sciorinano riff di settantiana memoria e potenza stoner. E dall’alto del muro emerge la calda voce di Tom Frank. A questo punto sembra veramente di aver viaggiato indietro di quarant’anni buoni, perché affiorano alla mente i Blue Öyster Cult e i primi Deep Purple. La scaletta è breve – solo 45 minuti, purtroppo! – ed incentrata sull’appena uscito Fears of the Dead. Il suo ritmo è serrato, perché i quattro di Austin passano da un brano all’altro senza soluzione di continuità, e le canzoni hanno davvero un gran bel groove. Il finale è l’apice della componente più psych/space della band, con le chitarre che si adagiano su fraseggi dilatati e la sezione ritmica che le asseconda. Un altro grande concerto di una band targata Heavy Psych Sounds Records!

Duel + Geeah – 04.01.2016 – Teatro Niccolini (Castellina Marittima – PI)

Lost amidst the most remote hills of Pisa area (essentially in the inland of the coast of Livorno area!) Castellina Marittima is THE rock place of the sultry Tuscan August. I did not know its winter version…and now – with satisfaction! - I filled this gap.

Geeah, from Livorno, overheat the already warm night at Teatro Niccolini. Newly formed, the four guys play a stoner rock which is a direct son of Kyuss. Yet it has got a good metal vein which is reminiscent of Corrosion of Conformity and which adds a bonus of heaviness and groove to their songs. Vocals are the undoubted strong point: punchy and mighty from the first to the last note. The venue has got no perfect acoustics and sounds tend to be a little bit fused and confused because of a slight echo, but as the setlist goes on they significantly improve and so in the end it is possible to appreciate not only the groove of bass and guitar, but also the quality of their riffs. …it is said that the project was born for fun: well, I would continue to have fun this way!

Then Duel, from Texas (and I really ask myself how did they get in this wonderful – and secluded – countryside!). The attack is a wall of sound: erected by bass and drums undertaking tightened marches and fortified by two guitars playing riffs with 70s taste and stoner strenght. And then, from the top of the wall, Tom Frank’s warm voice emerges. And in that moment one really thinks of having travelled back in time of 40 years, because Blue Öyster Cult and the early Deep Purple immediately come to the mind. The setlist is short – unfortunately, only 45 minutes! – and focused on the just released Fears of the Dead. Its rhythm is fast, because the four from Austin seamlessly switch from a song to another and their songs really have a great groove. The final is the peak of the most psych/space side of the band: guitars lay down on dilated phrasings and rhythm section indulge them. Another amazing gig of a band of Heavy Psych Sounds Records roster!
