Spirit Adrift – Divided by Darkness

L’heavy metal è un enorme gioco di ruolo. Un mondo parallelo dove le regole della realtà sono ribaltate: il perdente può diventare leader, mentre il servo può finalmente essere padrone. Immedesimarsi nel guerriero forte e coraggioso o nel cavaliere elegante e astuto, che combattono con lealtà contro ingiustizie apparentemente insormontabili, è un gioco per fuggire dall’esclusione sociale imposta agli adolescenti bullizzati da una società cinica e in continua competizione. Ma anche per combattere i propri demoni interiori, che costringono all’isolamento. Non solo un gioco, quindi, ma una vera e propria autoanalisi, basata sulla volontà di affermazione della propria personalità, sul senso di giustizia e sul desiderio di riscatto. Mente del progetto Spirit Adrift, Nate Garrett crea un universo fantastico con l’intento di affrontare in modo catartico i demoni che lo hanno inghiottito fin dall’adolescenza, in particolare l’alcolismo e l’incapacità di integrazione. L’oscurità che Garrett si trova ad affrontare è quindi sia la società nella quale si trova a vivere, sia il lato oscuro di se stesso. Garrett si getta in una battaglia epica armato della spada di fuoco dell’heavy metal classico (Iron Maiden su tutti) e di quell’armatura solida ma sporca, ammaccata e mai troppo luccicante, tipica del power metal americano degli anni '80, con la consapevolezza malinconica e disillusa del doom metal con il quale il musicista di Phoenix è cresciuto (i padri ispiratori Black Sabbath, ma soprattutto i fratelli maggiori Pallbearer, di cui è stato amico e roadie). Con uno spettacolare e fantasioso heavy metal moderno, Divided by Darkness ci ricorda che le minoranze non devono farsi dividere dalle forze dell’oscurità, ma rimanere unite anche nella tempesta. L’unico modo per poter vincere la partita nel mondo fantastico del gioco di ruolo, ma anche nella realtà.

Heavy metal is a gigantic role-playing game. A parallel world where the rules of reality are reversed: the loser can become leader, while the servant can finally be master. Identifying yourself in the strong and courageous warrior or in the elegant and astute knight, who fight with loyalty against apparently insurmountable injustices, is a game to escape from the social exclusion imposed on adolescents bullied by a cynical and constantly competing society. But also to fight those inner demons, which force isolation. Not just a game, therefore, but a real self-analysis, based on the will to affirm your personality, on the sense of justice and on the desire for redemption. Mind of the Spirit Adrift project, Nate Garrett creates a fantastic universe with the aim of cathartically addressing the demons that have engulfed him since adolescence, in particular alcoholism and the inability to integrate. The darkness that Garrett is facing is therefore both the society in which he lives, and his own inner dark side. Garrett throws himself into an epic battle armed with the sword of fire of classic heavy metal (Iron Maiden above all) and with that solid but dirty armor, dented and never too shiny, typical of 80s American power metal, with the melancholic and disillusioned awareness of the doom metal with which the Phoenix musician grew up (the inspiring fathers Black Sabbath, but above all the older brothers Pallbearer, of whom he was a friend and roadie). With a spectacular and imaginative modern heavy metal, Divided by Darkness reminds us that minorities must not be divided by the forces of darkness, yet  they have to stay united even in the storm. The only way to win the game in the fantasy world of role-playing, but also in reality.
