King Buffalo + Child - 29.06.2019 - Cascina Bellaria Rural Music Club! (Sezzadio, AL)

Sarà per il caldo infernale di quest’estate, o forse perché sto diventando vecchio, fatto sta che quest’anno i mega concerti estivi con migliaia di persone sotto il Sole li sopporto meno del solito. Molto meglio rifugiarsi nelle campagne piemontesi, per un concerto intimo, tra un tuffo in piscina ed una birra fresca. Una festa tra amici, più che un semplice concerto, anche grazie all’atmosfera che si respira stasera a Cascina Bellaria.

I Child si integrano perfettamente nell’ambiente rilassato e genuinamente hippie della Cascina, con il loro blues rock rovente che arriva dritto dalla fine degli anni '60. Feedback manovrati con abilità fino a trasformarsi in morbide pentatoniche, una batteria fluidissima e trascinante, e riffoni stracarichi di fuzz che mi asciugano i capelli ancora bagnati dalla piscina. Ma i richiami al periodo d’oro del rock non sono mai nostalgici, perché la loro musica ha personalità, è viva, spontanea e perfettamente ancorata al “qui e ora”. Straordinari.

Se la spiritualità dei Child nasce dalle radici, quella dei King Buffalo assorbe energia direttamente dalle foglie. Il loro hard rock psichedelico punta lo sguardo verso l’alto, al di là dell’atmosfera terrestre, e si getta a capofitto tra stelle e pianeti, grazie a riff ciclicamente moltiplicati da riverberi e linee di basso sempre cariche di groove propulsivo. Un caleidoscopio ai limiti dello space/prog, suonato con precisione chirurgica, che non disdegna qualche esplosione stoner. Durante il bis, dopo un concerto impeccabile, il batterista si attacca ad una bottiglia di vino rosso, e gli altri devono fare i salti mortali per stare dietro alle sue traiettorie appannate e rallentate. Un fuoriprogramma che rende ancora più sincera e divertente questa bella serata estiva.

It may be because of the infernal heat of this summer, or it may be because I'm getting older, the fact is that this year I stand even less than usual those mega summer concerts with thousands of people burning below the sun. Really much better to take shelter in the Piedmontese countryside, for an intimate concert, taking a swim in the pool and having a cold beer. A party with friends, rather than a simple concert, also thanks to the cool atmosphere at Cascina Bellaria.

Child integrate perfectly into the relaxed and genuinely hippie environment of the venue, with their red-hot rock blues coming straight from the late 60s. Skilfully maneuvered feedbacks becoming soft pentatonics, extremely fluid and enthralling drums, and fuzz-loaded riffs drying my hair still wet after the pool. Yet the hints to the golden age of rock are never nostalgic, because their music has got personality: it is alive, spontaneous and perfectly anchored to the "here and now". Amazing.

If Child's spirituality comes from the roots, King Buffalo's one absorbs energy directly from the leaves. Their psychedelic hard rock looks upwards, beyond Earth's atmosphere, and it throws itself headlong among stars and planets, thanks to riffs which are cyclically multiplied by reverberations and bass lines always rich in propelling groove. A kaleidoscope on the edge of space/prog, played with surgical precision, which does not disdain some stoner explosion. During the encore, after an impeccable concert, the drummer linger over a bottle of red wine, and the rest of the band must jump through hoops to keep up with his now fogged and slowed down trajectories. Something unexpected that makes this beautiful summer evening even more sincere and funny.
