Il thrash metal raggiunge il suo apice di successo nel 1990 - anno che rappresenta inoltre la fine di un'era per questo tipo di musica. Mentre i Megadeth costruiscono un ponte fra il classic metal degli anni '80 e il metal tecnico degli anni '90 e i Pantera rivoluzionano e modernizzano il genere, gli Slayer compongono l'inno funebre di un movimento musicale. Seasons in the Abyss non è un album rivoluzionario, ma è un album maturo, perfetta rappresentazione di un genere musicale prossimo alla sua stessa morte. Esplora i due poli estremi della musica degli Slayer: il male e la violenza. Essendo impossibile riprodurre la furia di Reign in Blood, la grandezza di questo album non sta nella violenza (anche se War Ensemble è una perfetta macchina da guerra!), bensì nelle atmosfere cupe e nelle melodie dissonanti, più spaventose e malvagie di quelle di South of Heaven. I grandi riff mid tempo combinati con le atmosfere malate rappresentano uno degli apici del thrash metal e al tempo stesso il suo funerale.

Thrash metal reaches the apex of notoriety in 1990 - year that also represents the end of an era for this kind of music. While Megadeth build a bridge between 80s classical and 90s technical metal and Pantera revolutionize and modernize the genre, Slayer compose the funeral hymn of a musical movement. Seasons in the Abyss is not a revolutionary album, but a mature one, a perfect representation of a musical genre close to its own death. It explores the two extremes of Slayer music: evil and violence. Being impossible to reproduce Reign in Blood fury, the greatness of this album is not in its violence (although War Ensemble is a perfect war machine!), but in its gloomy atmospheres and dissonant melodies, more dreadful and evil than South of Heaven ones. Great mid tempo riffs combined with sick atmosphere represent one of thrash highest points, and its funeral at the same time.
