Zippo - After Us

Basta imbattersi nel muro di distorsione di Low Song per capire che gli Zippo cercano l’energia primigenia dei suoni valvolari, con la sua forza dirompente e immediata. Ma quando un arpeggio dissonante ipnotizza con i suoi riflessi la struttura del brano, scopriamo che la musica del gruppo ha anche una componente "mentale" oltre a quella fisica. Il quarto disco della band pescarese è un monolite con la base conficcata nella roccia più granitica, ma il cui vertice sprigiona una carica elettrica che sembra comunicare con lo spazio profondo. La title track è un perfetto esempio di questo contrasto tra pesantezza trascinante e melodie allucinate e dark-psichedeliche, sulla scia delle composizioni più possenti del grunge di Seattle. Per tutta la durata del disco la potente voce di Davide Straccione si divincola - con estrema padronanza delle sue capacità - tra melodie oblique, roboanti esplosioni di energia e caldissimi bisbigli da crooner, dimostrandosi l’arma in più posseduta dagli Zippo, di cui sono spesso privi anche i maggiori nomi del genere (Torche, per dirne uno). Rimasta con una sola chitarra, la band di Pescara ha dovuto reinventare il proprio sound, asciugando i grondanti intrecci melodici che la stavano accostando sempre di più alla musica di Mastodon e Baroness, per riallacciarsi allo stoner metal degli esordi. In questa evoluzione non viene rinnegata la ricerca spirituale dei lavori precedenti (evidente nelle atmosfere sciamaniche di Familiar Roads e di Stage 6), che viene però assorbita da brani più diretti e carichi. After Us è il disco più maturo degli Zippo, che si confermano una tra le più interessanti band del panorama metal alternativo (non solo italiano).

Just face the wall of distortions of Low Song and you immediately realize that Zippo are looking for the primal original energy of valvular sounds, with its direct and disruptive strenght. Then a dissonant arpeggio hypnotizes the structure of the song with its reflections and you discover that the music of the band has got also a "mental" part in addition to the physical one. The fourth album of the quartet from Pescara is a monolith with its base stuck in the granite, but with its vertex pointing to the deepest space. The title track is a perfect example of this contrast between enthralling heaviness and hallucinating dark-psychedelic melodies, in the wake of the mightiest songs of Seattle grunge. Throughout the whole album Davide Straccione voice moves through crooked melodies, resounding bursts of energy and crooner-like whispers and he proves to be the ace in the hole of Zippo, an added value of which often lack even the most renowned names of the genre (see Torche, just to mention a name). With one only guitar, the band from Pescara had to reinvent its sound, abandoning those melodic weavings close to Mastodon and Baroness music, referring back to the stoner metal of its early years. In this evolution there is still room for the spiritual research of the past full lenghts (evident in the shamanic atmospheres of Familar Roads and Stage 6), yet it is absorbed by more direct groovy songs. After Us is the most mature album by Zippo, who confirm to be one of the most interesting bands in alternative metal scene (and not only in the Italian one).
