Red Fang + Fatzobomb – 12.06.2015 - The Cage Theatre (Livorno)

I Red Fang sono una di quelle band che dal vivo riescono ad esprimere tutto il loro potenziale, che su disco appare invece imbrigliato. La band di Portland torna sulla costa toscana per la terza volta in due anni (estate 2013 a Castellina Marittima in occasione del festival Musica W, gennaio 2014 al The Cage di Livorno).

Questa volta ad aprire il loro concerto c'è una band locale, i Fatzobomb, che si dimostra all'altezza grazie ad uno stoner rock divertente e dinamico. Chiaramente ispirati ai Queens of the Stone Age, il gruppo toscano ha un mare di energia da scaricare sul pubblico, grazie anche a suoni molto caldi e potenti e ad una voce davvero interessante. Da approfondire.

Più pesanti, incazzati e oscuri rispetto all’anno precedente, i Red Fang perdono parte dell’impatto diretto e festaiolo che aveva reso il concerto del 2014 un pogo turbinante, ma guadagnano sporcizia e incazzatura tipicamente sludge. La scelta di concentrarsi sui brani di Murder the Mountains (il tour precedente era invece destinato alla promozione dell’ultimo disco, Whales and Leeches) si dimostra vincente. Groove travolgente e riff che si abbattono come macigni, con una potenza difficilmente immaginabile se si conosce la musica della band esclusivamente su disco. Il gruppo ormai è di casa e il pubblico è incontenibile e, anche se non si raggiungono i picchi di caos dell'anno precedente, bisogna stare attenti non farsi trascinare nel gorgo del pogo. I membri del gruppo non sono così gioiosamente "cazzoni" come un anno prima, ma pestano ancora di più, con canzoni più complesse e pesanti, dimostrando che il concerto è la giusta dimensione per potersi godere appieno la loro musica.

Red Fang are one of those bands capable of expressing live all their potential which indeed seems almost compressed in studio recordings. The band from Portland is at its third live show on Tuscany coast in two years (summer 2013 in Castellina Marittima for Musica W festival, January 2014 at The Cage in Livorno).

This time there is a local band as opener – Fatzobomb – which is up to the task, thanks to its dynamic, entertaining stoner rock. Clearly inspired by Queens of the Stone Age, the Tuscan band has got a lot of energy during its live, thanks also to mighty sounds and really interesting vocals. To deepen further.

Heavier, darker and angrier than in 2014, Red Fang lose part of the partying, direct impact which made the concert of the previous year a sort of swirling mosh. Yet they gain in tipically sludgy wrath and dirt. The choice to focus on songs from Murder the Mountains (while the previous tour was to promote the new album Whales and Leeches) is a winning one. Enthralling groove and boulder-like riffs: a hardly imaginable power if one knows them only for the studio albums. The band feels like at home and the audience is uncontainable, and even if the chaos is not at its apex as it was the last year, it is hard not to be gragged into the vortex of the mosh. The band is not so heartily “silly and playful” as the year before: yet they sound heavier, they play more complex and heavier songs, showing that live concert is the right way to fully enjoy their music.
